Founder ’s Notes

Has God ever given you a vision? Do you have an idea locked on the inside of you, waiting to be birthed… perhaps, to start a business or to write a book? On August 20, 2005, I felt God directing me to start VOICE Magazine. I quickly made note and started praying to ensure this was of God. Habakkuk 2:2-3 KJV says, “And the LORD answered me, and said, write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” It has been a grueling journey with a lot of bumps along the way, but God brought the vision of VOICE Magazine into fruition.

You now hold in your hands the fourth issue of VOICE Magazine. As you browse through the pages you will notice new columns as well as more familiar faces. VOICE Magazine has joined with area churches and businesses to re-launch and bring you more articles authored by area pastors, business owners, and local authors. As we re-launch, we want to keep you (the reader) our first priority, so we have transitioned to a subscription-based publication. This change will enable us to continue providing excellent content that informs, encourages, inspires, changes, and unites the people of God, without the clutter of too many ads.

You can continue to support VOICE Magazine by purchasing an annual subscription for only $15 for six bi-monthly issues. Subscription information can be found on the next page. We also want to hear what you like or dislike about the magazine. Please send your comments to [email protected].

Take a look in the mirror

Take a look at yourself;

Are you pleased with the picture

Or do you need some help?

Do you know where to go?

Do you know where to look?

Put your trust in Jesus

He has all the answers written in His book.

Take a look at yourself

Just one look might change your whole life;

Don't let this opportunity pass you by

Just one look could save you from misery and strife.

I took a look at myself and let God do the rest

He changed my heart and changed my soul;

I thank God that I took that look

And now I can say that I've been made whole.

“tRUSt In tHE LoRD WItH ALL oF YoUR HEARt.”

When you become a Christian, you accept Jesus as both your Savior and Lord. He is your Savior because He died for the sins that separated you from God. He is your Lord because He leads the direction of your life. But many Christians struggle with turning their lives over to the Lord. They have trouble trusting Him. These verses first encourage us to trust the Lord and then show us how to turn everything over and allow Him to lead us.

“LEAn not on YoUR oWn UnDERStAnDInG.”

It all starts with acknowledging the Lord’s ability to lead us. Jesus said that He is, “The Alpha and the Omega” (Revelation 1:8). That means as God, He can see the beginning of all things as clearly as He can see the ending. With this knowledge He is uniquely qualified

to lay out a plan for your life. Jesus isn’t making up things as He goes along. He knows where each and every step you take will lead.

“In ALL YoUR WAYS ACKnoWLEDGE HIM.”

So we understand that Jesus has the ability to direct us, now we must apply that knowledge to our everyday lives. “In all your ways acknowledge Him”, means including Jesus, seeking His will, in all aspects of your life - not just the big decisions. This is done by first praying for His leadership, then reading the Bible (What does the Bible say about a decision you are about to make? God communicates to you through His Word - read James 1:22), and finally seeing what circumstances He put before you to influence your decision (That could mean advice from a friend or hearing a message at church. Events could take place that lead you one way or the other).

“AnD HE WILL MAKE YoUR PAtH StRAIGHt.”

Life is hard to understand sometimes. Things happen to us every day that make us ask, “Why is it like this?” What you must remember is that things don’t make sense to us because of our perspective. We are seeing life one event at a time. So often, life seems to be a set of random events that aren’t connected. But, as we learned about above, the Lord knows how everything will turn out. From His perspective, He sees how events are connected and promises us that, “all thing work together for the good of those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Some lives are harder than others. I don’t know why that is - only Jesus knows that - but I do know that no matter what life brings, you won’t be going through it alone. Jesus will be with you every step of the way.

trusting Jesus

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways ac-knowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. — Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

Christianity is not a religion of rules and regulations. Jesus said He came to give us an abundant life. If we’re warned to stay away from something, it’s because He knows the dangers. We only care about the immediate fulfillment of our desires but God, like any good father, warns us of things that can hurt us and those around us. Jesus summed up the principles on how to live your life this way:

On treating others He told us to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” On treating ourselves He said that “if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you.” Meaning that if something causes you to sin, avoid it.

Now you may do whatever you want, but before you tear down a fence pause long enough to find out why it was

put up in the first place. There are spiritual, physical, emotional and social consequences when we sin. We’re told to avoid certain things not because Christianity is about a set of rules but because if we stay away from them, the quality of our lives will be better and we will have a closer relationship with God.

When I was in elementary school Howard Cook was a high schooler. However,

he wasn’t just a high school student, he was a football player. To me, a ten year old, he looked like a giant and he had the stature of a god. Most high school students don’t give elementary age kids the time of day. They probably don’t even know they exist. Howard was different. He always spoke to me. We went to church together and our parents were friends, which may have helped, but I sensed that it really was Howard’s character to be kind and interested in me. He always asked me how I was doing when he saw me. He taught me things about playing football when our families were together. What he did more than anything, he inspired me. He made me want to be

a football player. He made me want to be a kind person. About ten years ago I ran into Howard when I was doing some training and we had a chance to “catch up”. He still had that same spirit of interest and inspiration. It was nice to thank him for what he did in my life. Like most of us, he was surprised when I told him. He didn’t realize the impact he was making. He was simply being himself. A few weeks ago my son Drew and I spoke at a conference and met John Alston. John is a professional speaker who had spoken at the conference earlier that day. During the reception John and I visited for about thirty minutes. When I told

him about B.A.M. and what we were doing, he shared a story. He had no intention of broadcasting the story, but it is such a powerful story that it is worth sharing. In 1982 John began working with African American young men in the Los Angeles area. He met with them for five months every Saturday to work on building character and values. He has worked with thousands of young men since then. Because of his work, hundreds of young men have gone to college who would not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. A few months ago he said he was watching one of the “makeover” reality TV shows and was stunned and quite pleased to see that one of the young men formerly in his program was the plastic surgeon in the show. You never really know the impact that

you are having on the young men (and women) that are around you. What I observe, unfortunately, is that most adults are so caught up in our stuff that we don’t invest time in the young people in our paths. Young people are looking for someone to show interest in them and inspire them. That person just might be you. In John 10:10 Jesus said, “The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that you may have life and have it to the fullest.” He also said, “When you do it unto the least of these my children, you do it unto me.” There is a young man in your house or somewhere in your path that needs you to be the source of God’s love in his life. You might be the only person that touches his life in that way.

Amy Winkles By sonny LeMMons

Powerful. Moving. Intense. Amy Winkles possesses a maturity that is misleading when one considers it in relation to her age. Anyone who has had the opportunity to observe her as a worship leader or performer can attest to the power of her heart, her soul, and her very spirit intertwined with the presence of God. As her voice graces the songs she raises in praise, Amy actively and with an unquestionable passion engages all the individuals she celebrates in worship with, from her fellow musicians to the throngs of believers who sing along. All are enraptured with the intensity of her voice but even more importantly to Amy, with the Spirit whose presence is both felt and known. my history, HIS PRESEnCE Long before she ever became aware of her ministerial calling, Amy’s life was being shaped by God even as she herself was being shaped. In July of 1982, Amy was born into a family of multi-talented singers and musicians. “I sang my first song publicly when I was four,” Amy recalls. “It was ‘Master of the Wind.’ I still remember every word.” At the age of twelve, Amy’s youth pastor asked her to help lead worship for her peers. Gratefully, Amy accepted the opportunity to serve and began the journey of a minister and an artist. Throughout her teenage years and into her time at North Georgia College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Amy’s voice and calling were both maturing and growing stronger. “During my time [at college], I grew a lot in discipline and ability. [I] worked with extraordinary people of musicianship and character who have played a huge role in shaping [both] my music and my character.” my voice, HIS SonG With an artist’s soul, Amy crafts original works of worship that stem from both everyday life and the Word of God. “Circumstances - whether mine or someone else’s...trials, joys...they are a way to put out a message of the hope, grace, love and fulfillment found in Christ alone.” Amy’s musical influences are as unique and diverse as she is, with influences in terms of both artistry and spirituality that range from the late Keith Green to her contemporaries such as Plumb and Nichole Nordeman. Amy has a matchless voice with a quality born out of both a desire to perform at the highest caliber and out of her love for Jesus Christ. She performs with an extraordinary level of professionalism and drive that points to her Creator and “Reason for it all.” It seems as if a baton has been passed on to her which she readily takes up with deep appreciation in both servanthood and in performance. However, the artistic attributes that guide her heart and spirit are firmly rooted in the time Amy spends in studying the Word and in her faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. With the faith and love of a child and the humility of someone who is truly grateful for the opportunities presented to her, Amy remains thankful for the talents and gifts she’s been given. She exists in the hope her songs and her life will bring praise, honor and glory to God the Father.

Judge Patricia Barron is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. Once a resident of Atlanta’s public housing projects, Judge Barron decided at age 12 to become a lawyer. Upon desegregation of the Atlanta public schools, she was transferred to an integrated school in the 11th grade, where she excelled in basketball, softball and her general studies. In 1972 she earned the second highest grade point average in her graduating class.

Judge Barron graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia in 1976. While at Mercer she worked as a reporter for the college newspaper. In 1979 she graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., where she began her career teaching “Street Law” to high school students and young adults.

Judge Barron worked as a poverty rights attorney with Georgia Legal Services for 20 years, before becoming a law professor at the University of Georgia School of Law in Athens, Georgia. In February 2001, Judge Barron became Associate Magistrate Court Judge of Athens-Clarke County and Chief Judge in August 2002. She serves as a great role model to the entire community.

Judge Barron published her first children’s book entitled, Meet Judge Patricia Barron: She’s Chief Magistrate Court Judge! in 2007. Jai is a 9 year old girl who is curious about how the justice system works in Georgia. A family friend, “Miss Pat”, has recently been elected a judge. Jai travels to Athens to visit “Judge Pat” to learn more about her and her court. Judge Pat tells Jai how the court system works to solve

problems fairly between ordinary people. Jai learns the value of telling the truth in all situations. Later, Jai travels back to Athens to participate in the judge’s family and community life. While doing so, she learns the importance of family, history, and travel. Readers join Jai on this unforgettable journey through the legal system and beyond.

Julie Cannon is the author of The Homegrown Series, which includes Truelove & Homegrown Tomatoes, ‘Mater Biscuit, and Those Pearly Gates. This trio has been described as “Southern fried soul food” and “A cross between Jan Karon and Fannie Flagg.” In Truelove & Homegrown Tomatoes, we meet Imogene Lavender. Euharlee, Georgia is a place where hard work and prayers unite the community. Imo is shattered when her beloved husband of 48 years dies. She deals with her grief by throwing herself into nurturing both her vegetable garden and her girls. Imo’s concern for her adopted foster-daughter, Jeanette, and her niece, Loutishie, supercedes her desire for self-fulfillment. She determines to go on with the “fever of life on this earth”, solely to guide Jeanette and Lou through the perils of adolescence. However, the longings of her lonely heart and the persuasions of well-meaning friends send Imo off on a man-hunt.

After a beautician transforms Imo into a woman who looks two decades younger than her sixty-four years, Imo cruises the frozen foods section of her local Kroger, looking for single men filling up their buggies with Hungry Man dinners. Sometimes painful, sometimes comical, and always surprising… Imo’s search for love is recorded by her niece in “Loutishie’s Notebook”. Lou also ruminates there about her all-consuming fear of the Rapture of the saints and store-bought tomatoes. The Homegrown novels retail for $13 each. They can be found at all major bookstores. Julie Lowrey Cannon grew up in Athens, Georgia, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism. She lives with her husband and three children in Watkinsville, Georgia where they attend Watkinsville First Methodist Church. Her most recent novel, The Romance Readers’ Book Club, is also set in the rural South. Visit her website at www.julielcannon.com

BuilDing BlOcks FOr a healthier yOu

By anDreW naWOichik

You’ve all heard it said, “we are what we eat”. I have come to realize that this is

only partially true. Through many years of research and continuing education, I now know that “we are not only what we eat, but also what we absorb and what we do not eliminate”. The foods we consume make up who we are at the cellular level. They can either make us strong, healthy individuals or weak, unhealthy individuals. Our bodies are designed by God to absorb and assimilate nutrients from the foods we eat. Those nutrients are then dispersed to the cells, where they are utilized to bring about health and wellness. However, there is a problem… the modern diet is void of crucial nutrients that our cells require to function properly. If our cells have the proper structure, they will have the proper function. We have only one body, and I totally believe we must take excellent care of it so we can be most effective as servants of the Lord. There is good news! In 1996, there was a huge breakthrough discovery in the field of Glycobiology called glyconutrients. Glyconutrients are a class of nutrients, like vitamins and minerals. Glyconutrients are special carbohydrates (monosaccharides) that provide the building blocks that enable the cells in the body to communicate effectively. Today, many different glyconutrient products may be found on the shelves of your local health food stores, as this technology has been widely accepted in both medical and scientific fields of study. However, there is one company that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Mannatech is the company that discovered and coined the term “glyconutrients”. They then formulated the world’s first blend of eight essential monosaccharides currently missing from the average modern diet. This science has been taught in 82 out of 120 medical schools across the country since 1996, from a medical textbook called Harpers Biochemistry. There is a chapter in the book called “Glycoproteins” written by Dr. Robert Murray, which lists the eight essential monosaccharides (as previously mentioned). Out of the eight required,

there are only two of these essential monosaccharides in the modern diet. Without these eight essential monosaccharides, our immune systems do not have what they require in order to determine a healthy cell from an unhealthy one. Without them, they are unable to detect an enemy cell and destroy it. They cannot determine if a cell is damaged and simply needs to be repaired and restored. The ability to communicate with each other is reliant on these eight essential monosaccharides. They are the “alphabet” by which the cells form their “words” used to communicate and transfer their biological data to one another. MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) stated in an article in their February 2003 issue of Technology Review, that this is one of the top “ten technologies that will change the world”. They went on to say that “if we don’t have

glycosylation, we don’t have life”. What is glycosylation? It is simply the proper combination of these monosaccharides on the cell surface. Imagine if you and I tried to write a message to each other on a sheet of paper and we left off the vowels. Think about how difficult it would be to read the message. If we can’t read the message, then we can’t communicate effectively. This is the same way it is at the cellular level with the use of the eight essential monosaccharides; they are the missing links that are necessary for our cells to communicate effectively with each other. Go Wellness of Athens, a local wellness club, sponsors monthly meetings to help educate the Athens community and surrounding towns on this technology. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at Earthfare located at 1681 Lumpkin Street in Athens.

“You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers Who soar to high heights.”

-Dr. Seuss, Oh the Places You’ll Go!

Where are you going? What are you waiting for? Do you believe that you will soar to great heights?

Too often we find ourselves believing Satan’s lies; lies that say you will never amount to anything; lies that you aren’t special enough or that God can’t use you until you are more mature, older, or more educated.

God is in the business of making our dreams come true. He puts many of our desires and dreams in hearts. Then He equips you with the right tools and gifts to accomplish them. We know from scripture that God has an extraordinary plan for your life, yet all He desires is a life of obedience and faith. Faith and obedience is what the “high fliers” or the great people who have gone before us, had in common.

Take David for instance. He was a teen aged guy with lots of older, bigger brothers. His job during the fighting was to bring food to his brothers. That was not a very glamorous task during a battle. But when he arrived at the battlefield, he found no battle, just petrified soldiers. So he sprung into action. Why? He had faith, not in himself, his size or his ability, but in God. You remember the story. God wins and he used a teenager to win the battle.

No matter who we are or what we become, God wants to use us in big

and small ways each day. Some may become famous, others may find themselves in a more ordinary kind of life, but with God it is always possible to do extraordinary things! When we surrender our lives with the intent to glorify God in all things, I can guarantee God will do more than we can fathom. “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”

Into distant lands with the •message of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard!

Into your junior high and •high schools where the things of this world have replaced Jesus and prayer

Into office buildings where •many who get by only because it is routine

Into burning buildings where •you will rescue people

Into hospitals where people •are dying of illnesses

Into restaurants where people •are hungry, and searching for food of substance; The

Bread of Life

Into science labs where •others search for the meaning of life

Into the sports career where •athletes search for a reason to be great besides money

You hold the key to life. In every place you will go, you have the answer that could potentially change the course of someone’s life forever. My question to you is, are you willing to share? Are you willing to surrender and let go of your plans for your life and allow God to use you to go places you never imagined you could go? With a small amount of faith all things are possible.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 17:20,

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, You can say to this mountain, Move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

((((((( Woman II Woman )))))))

If you think having your heart right with God is the only important thing, think again. God said “My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). I believe it is possible to have a right heart for God and yet to have things in our head all wrong. And with a wrong head we may very well live in defeat and lose ground in the kingdom

of God. This has nothing to do with our hearts or our worship. Our lives can be destroyed because of ignorance. Without a knowledge of the truth, we cannot be free (John 8:32). Most of the battles Christians face are in the mind. We are bombarded with thoughts everyday that can lead us astray and cause destruction in our lives.

Our thoughts and emotions can be injected with wrong motives, bitterness, unforgiveness, evil intentions and wrong patterns and even memories of the past that can cause chaos and confusion in our minds. Too many of us allow our imaginations to lead us into fantasies and daydreams that are contrary to God’s plan and purpose for us. God’s word says we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2). The Holy Spirit is the foreman of the construction site and the word of God is the tool that is used for the process. Whatever is not built on the word will not last; it will not produce the promises God has guaranteed in His word.

I must rid myself of old ways of thinking and build new thought processes based on the word of God. The Apostle Paul said “set your mind on things above and not on earth” (Colossians 3:2). In order for us to do that we have to continually seek after the things of God. I pray that today will be a turning point in your mind, will, and emotions. Let God turn your sorrow into joy and your mourning into dancing.

It has been my pleasure sharing with you. God Bless

So often, people wait until something happens before they do anything differently. Yet, that thought process breeds procrastination and lack of preparation once the opportunity you’ve been waiting for arrives. Not quite sure what your purpose is yet? Spend time in prayer, study and meditation in order to discern the vision for your life. Then

begin to look the part! Also, throughout the Bible it is made clear that we were all created to praise the Lord and bring Him glory. We are afforded a great opportunity to give glory to God daily in the way that we dress and present ourselves. In order to glorify God while fulfilling the vision for our lives, remember that health and beauty truly do begin from within. Adequate water consumption (at least eight 8 ounce glasses per day), a healthy diet, a regular exercise regimen, and a stress relief program (such as prayer and meditation) are all vital to our physical, spiritual and intellectual health. You will be amazed at the increase in energy, improved condition of skin and hair, and level of peace that you will experience upon the employment of these practices! Here’s a sweet tip for overnight blemish control: After cleansing your skin thoroughly at bedtime, dip the first 2 fingertips of one hand into raw honey. Apply honey directly to any bumps or blemishes. Leave on and allow the natural healing properties of the honey to work overnight. In the morning, rinse skin thoroughly then apply a light moisturizer. In my experience with this overnight honey treatment, blemishes shrink to at least half the size and some disappear completely! May God bless and keep you. Be You! Be Free! BeLoved!

Are you like me, always dreaming up great ideas? Some work, others… not so much. You think your new idea is the best thing since sliced bread, but when you share the vision, others are a little slow to jump on board? So it doesn’t fly. You chalk it up as

having an overactive imagination or having eaten something rich before bedtime. Then, a while later, someone else comes up with the very same idea (or a slightly altered version of it), and it’s a huge success. You’re left scratching your head, wondering what happened. Habakkuk 2:1-3 tells us to seek God’s wisdom, write down what He tells us, and to trust that what He says is true and that it will happen at just the right time. I guess we forgot to check the “big idea” manual. When we had “our” great idea we acted on it right away with enthusiasm (but perhaps without prayer?) and we didn’t get the desired result. Translation: We didn’t get what we wanted, how we wanted it, when we wanted it. I just hate when that happens! Could it be that we were given a vision for a future project… one that we should have waited on God for, instead of rushing headlong into it? Had we written it down and made it plain (and simple) so that others could clearly see the vision, might we have garnered more support… more enthusiasm… more success? Had we taken the time to wait on the Lord and trust in His timing, would the end result have been different? That depends… We need to ask ourselves the tough questions: Where did the inspiration come from in the first place? Were we ‘scanning the horizon’ for His answer? Did the Holy Spirit inspire it, or was it a result of some late night snacking? And just how do we know when the timing is right? Well, let’s take Habakkuk’s step by step advice:

Ask God. 1. Pray and ask Him what HIS plans are for you. We know they are always good. Jer 29:10, 11

Write it down.2. Use a journal or some of the blank space in your day planner to keep notes. Then pray about it – again.

Write out a business plan.3. Does it look good on paper? Get some godly counsel and pray about it some more.

Wait on God.4. Pray for His perfect timing. His word promises that if it was from Him, it will come to pass. It’s not always about having the right answers – sometimes it’s about asking the right questions. Then being willing to accept the answers, even if it’s not what we wanted to hear. Ah, maturity in our daily walk. It’s all part of His Kingdom’s Business! Deby Sorensen is a motivational speaker, trainer and best-selling author.
