Hello from Kirsty
There is currently a globe on display in Salisbury Cathedral, which shows the earth as it would be viewed from space. I can’t help wondering if it will look the same in ten years’ time. You may also have seen the BBC programme ‘Our Planet Matters’.
Are we better stewards of the church than we are of the environment? Confession time… I am much less ‘Green’ than I like to think I am. I want to be part of the move towards environmental change; my heart is there but not all my actions have caught up yet.
Who can fail to be in awe of 93-year-old David Attenborough, or the passion of Greta Thunberg and all like minded young people, willing to make a stand, to change their practices, to safeguard the future of our planet?
The familiar and convincing statement ‘The earth is our greatest natural resource and it is incumbent upon us to protect it’ has been corrected by The Rev’d Jim Bear Jacobs to the even more powerful ‘The earth is our most sacred relative, and it is incumbent on us to protect her’
Speaking of the earth as a living sacred being speaks more directly to us than pollution or over consumption. It within our human nature to nurture and care for others, and this should include our world. We wouldn’t think of having a relationship with a person which was one sided – all take and no give, and thinking of the world as living and sacred helps us to see again that our relationship with it must be one of give and take, where we are obliged to nurture, care and sustain it, as we would care for our children or grandchildren. As we are reminded in the words of the Lord’s prayer ‘Your kingdom come; Your will be done; In earth as it is in heaven’ (Luke 11). We should be praying for the kingdom to come IN earth. The earth, the environment around us are part of the kingdom of God. Our prayers reflect the need for the kingdom of God to be established in our community today.
The greatest commandment we are given is ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your strength, with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself’ (Luke 10:27)
The Christian life is a simple one – to love God and to love one another, just as
we and all creation are fully loved by God. As we are hopefully blessed with
some summer weather, and we can get out and about to see the beauty of the
world around us, our challenge is to extend that love to the earth, the diverse,
beautiful, sacred existence with which we share our lives.

Zeals Walkers
On Sunday, 2nd June, 14 Zeals Walkers had a walk through the local lanes of Bruton. Parking at the Primary School, we walked down Tolbury Lane, passed Lady Wells and took the drovers path, Huish Lane, to Wyke Champflower. Avoiding most of the rain we went up over the hills to Cole and then along the fields through Mill on the Brue, ending up at Lower Backway, up Crown Barton to Higher Backway and back to our cars. We drove to the Old Red Lion in North Brewham for a delicious Sunday lunch. Our next walk will be led by David and Rosalie Watkins. For more information: [email protected]

Green Fingers : July & August Notes from the not so green fingered
The Delphinium and the Gladiolus I cannot believe it is high summer as it is so cold but let's hope the warm weather comes soon! The flower for the month of July is the delphinium. This cottage garden classic is one of the only true blue flowers and is said to indicate positivity, dignity and an open heart. The flower of August is the Gladiolus. These striking blooms are characterised by pointed tips and dramatic stalks of flowers that mean strength, generosity and integrity. Have a happy summer.

Country Calendar : July/August 2019 Standing tall are the fields of wheat
Dust rising from the harvest heat Combine sings out its throaty hum Until the harvest is finally done. JP
There is nothing like watching the combine at work eating up the crop like a hungry dinosaur (as my grandson says). Harvest is the culmination of a year’s hard work and determination to get it right. This will be the first harvest on a “no tillage” regime - absolutely no ploughing or cultivations of any sort have been used to grow the crops. No-till agriculture is a management system that aims to reduce soil erosion, decrease input costs, and sustain long-term crop productivity. We are constantly encouraged to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from agriculture and adapt to a food-production system to help with climate change. For us this is a huge forward thinking move which we have embraced and put into action. Even though very exciting, there is of course apprehension, but at least we are trying to do something for our future generations. So last year’s fields were quickly cleared, the fields ear marked for spring barley had a cover crop direct drilled into the stubble, sowing either mustard or radish seed; this grows, dies back into the soil, which helps increase biodiversity and bring a host of other benefits to the farm. Oilseed rape, wheat and winter barley were drilled immediately the fields were cleared. With no tillage the soil structure is much improved and fewer fossil fuels are used, which is not only good for your pocket but also the environment and emissions. The crops have looked very well throughout the growing season, and now we are on the cusp of reaping the rewards, hopefully! The weather always dictates and heavy prolonged rain can totally decimate a crop. As I write this the crops are standing and with a bit of luck will be still when we go in with the combine to start our first environmentally friendly harvest. Jane Parker

News from Stourhead
As I write this at the end of June, the property is still full of colour and beautiful blossom and currently being enjoyed by lots of visitors on coaches from the continent as well as from across the United Kingdom.
Behind the scenes the property teams are getting ready for the busy summer holidays and have lots of activities for families planned. Our life-sized board game, Bank or Bust, inspired by the Hoare family’s banking success, is available at weekends and during the holidays.
We are also hosting nature focused family craft workshops on weekdays in August, where we are helping children to make bug houses and bird feeders to take home and enjoy in their own garden. Carrying on with our nature theme, we are also taking part in a big butterfly count over the last weekend in July. If you want to take part, either come along to the walled garden over the weekend, or why not try it at home in your own garden?
Our friends, the Great Big Tree Climbing Company, are returning every Saturday in July and August allowing those brave enough to have a tree top adventure. We’re passionate that Stourhead is an adventure for all and that each visit offers a new discovery, whether that is a new view as the seasons change, or simply a new memory, created and to share with loved ones.
Whist summer hasn’t yet happened, we are already turning our focus to later in the year as autumn and Christmas will soon be upon us. This year we are excited to be working with Sony, the same company that works with Kew Gardens and Blenheim Palace, to create a magical, after-dark, illuminated trail called Christmas at Stourhead. As you read this edition, tickets have already gone on sale and we are really excited to see the event come to life.
If you want to find out more about Stourhead or get involved in the work that we do, please do get in touch. We look forward to seeing you at Stourhead again soon

The Healing Year 20th July: Look for Real Beauty
Consider the spider’s web that is so wonderfully and carefully made. How beautiful it looks hung with dew drops that sparkle and dazzle in the late summer morning - and yet it is so deadly to the fly. Consider the diamond ring being offered to the very pretty young woman who is determined to get on in life. How beautiful it looks with its facets that sparkle and dazzle in the late summer morning - and yet accepting it could cause the death of much that deep down is really important to her. Some things in life can appear to be very attractive but often they hide a complicated reality and an unpredictable outcome that will bring consequences in its wake which, far from enhancing life, will reduce it to ruins. They appeal - they draw the eye like a magnet; they tempt - and yet they may be an unexpected trap for the soul. Things of real beauty and lasting significance are eternally perfect and never harmful. Look for the beauty of truth, gentleness, kindness and generosity for these are eternal beauties which are not deadly in any way. Have you ever been attracted to something which you know is wrong? Dear Father God, forgive the sins of my past especially that which you bring to mind today: and enable me to find Your true beauty. Amen.

The Trinity Jesus said ‘Who do you say I am?’. His disciples answered and said ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, others another of the old prophets.’ Jesus answered ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered ‘Thou art the Logos, existing in the Father as His rationality and then, by an act of His will, being generated in consideration of the various functions by which God is related to His creation, but only on the fact that Scripture speaks of a Father, and a Son, and a Holy Spirit, each member of the Trinity being coequal with every other member, and each acting inseparably with and interspersing every other member, with only an economic subordination within God but causing no division which would make the substance no longer simple’ And Jesus replied ‘What?’
Flower Gala and Teas at Peter’s The Flower Gala at St Peter’s over the May Bank Holiday weekend was again a spectacular event with many visitors commenting on the wonderful arrangements. Very many thanks to everyone who contributed. The parish served tea and cakes on each of the three days of the weekend, when again much appreciation and generosity was showed by the visiting public. Our thanks to Carol Affleck and to all those who helped out by baking and/or serving. The amount raised for the parish was a magnificent £1,094 with a further £140 collected in the church box, so a grand total of £1,234. Well done to everyone!

News from Parish Councils
Bourton On 20th May Bourton Parish Council held three meetings in one evening. Mike
Withers was re-elected as Chairman and Iain McVie as Vice Chairman. Mike
gave a concise but detailed end of year report and the PC 2018/19 accounts
were finalised and approved. Both the Chairman’s report and the accounts can
be viewed on the village website. The next meetings are to take place at 7pm
on 22nd July and 19th August. Eve Wynn, Bourton Parish Clerk: 07702 709557
Kilmington The Annual Parish and Annual PC meetings were held on 16 May although disappointingly, no members of the public attended. At the former, Cllr Cotton reported on the activities of the Council during the year, Cllr Jeans presented his annual report, the Clerk presented the annual accounts and Cllr Mrs Hames on the Amenity Fund and Kilmington News Full details can be found on our website www.kilmingtonwhiltshire.org and on the village noticeboard. At the Annual PC meeting, Cllr Cotton and Cllr Mrs Hames were re-elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively. Due to lack of space in this joint summer edition of the magazine, I am not giving any other information but again, the minutes can be read on our website and on the noticeboard. I will give an update on any relevant items in the September edition.
Ruth Burrows, Clerk
Stourton with Gasper Three meetings were held on the evening of 23 May; the first was the Annual Parish meeting which allows for local organisations to report on the year’s activities. Reports were read out by Cllr Mrs Spencer for the Council, Cllr George Jeans presented his annual report and Mrs Crin Fearon reported on St Peter’s Church. In addition, the Kilmington & Stourton Cricket Club and the Memorial Hall provided reports and all can be viewed on our website www.stourton.org.uk The Annual PC meeting followed and Cllr Mrs Spencer and Cllr Ms Booth were both re-elected as Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively. The annual accounts were presented by the Responsible Financial Officer (the Clerk) and these were approved and signed off along with all of the statutory audit documentation. The third meeting covered the normal quarterly meeting. The minutes of each of the meetings are on our noticeboard in the courtyard of the National Trust and on our website. The next meeting of the Council will be on Thursday 29 August at 7.00 pm.

Zeals This edition comes between two of the regular bi-monthly meetings of the Parish Council, and my report could easily be rather long. However, I do feel that readers would gain more by finding the opportunity to access all of the recent minutes of the meetings on http://www.hugofox.com/communities/zeals rather than having a brief summary here. That is not to say no matters of importance were covered: far from it! I would like to use this space to advertise to all of you that the next Defibrillator Training Session has been arranged for Tuesday 24 September, at 7pm in Zeals Village Hall. Admission is free and the event is open to all no matter where people live. Our area is most fortunate to have several defibrillators available for emergency use for all residents, and it would be a shame if there were people here who were not able to make use of these potentially life-saving machines, or who were lacking in confidence to use them. Other vital life-saving skills and practices will also be taught by our visiting specialist to audience members at the meeting. Definitely a date for your diaries. Graham Edgar: Clerk
