FATHER’S DAY
The third Sunday in June is reserved for
paying tribute to fathers, but exactly how did
this holiday originate?
It’s interesting how some of our nation’s
holidays are born out of tragedy. For example
we just celebrated Memorial Day a few weeks
back and that day honored those who died in
service of this nation. Independence Day is a
celebration of our nation’s freedom but even that
came with a human cost and Easter required
the sacrifice of the Son of God in order for death
to be defeated.
In the United States Father’s Day was first
celebrated in 1908 as a commemoration for 210
men that lost their lives in a mining accident in
Monongahela, West Virginia. However, because
the organizer of the “first Father’s Day” failed to
register the event the honors for the first
Father’s Day actually went to Sonora Dodd from
Spokane, Washington who organized Father’s
Day in 1911.
The first Father's Day service took place in
Sonora's church on June 19th. Parishioners
wore red roses in honor of their fathers or white
roses to pay tribute to fathers who were
deceased. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge
designated the third Sunday in June for the
national recognition of fathers. President
Richard Nixon signed the date into public law in
1972, and there has been a run on ties and
Craftsman tools every June since.
Today we wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the
Fathers and grandfathers we have in our
parish, and to all those preparing for
fatherhood! We also pray to our Heavenly
Father to bring comfort to families whose
fathers are no longer in their lives, give them
peace when they need it and help comfort them
when their hearts are longing to see them again.
This Father's Day, whether you wear a red rose
or a white rose, thank the good Lord above for
the gift of your father.
