Page 2 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Today’s Readings

July 8, 2018 ~ Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Most of us would have rejected the Lord’s call to be a prophet to the Israelites after he calls them rebels, men-tioned they have “rebelled” against him, and that even their ancestors have “revolted.” As if those words of the Lord would not have also had Ezekiel running, the Lord continues his depressing, but realistic depiction of the people, pointing out their stubbornness and “Obstinate” hearts. Once more at the close of the reading, the Lord calls the people “rebellious.” No doubt Ezekiel wondered what he was getting into, but the Lord’s prophetic call is so strong, Ezekiel accepts. The Lord’s spirit was within holding him upright on his feet.

Responsorial Psalm123 : Only four verses make up Psalm 123 and we use all of them as our responsorial Psalm. The psalm begins with an individual praying to the Lord in heaven and then shifts to the plural, where we focus our eyes on the Lord as well as the psalmist. In order for the prophet Ezekiel to fulfill his mission, his eyes had to be locked on the Lord, lest the rebel-lious house of Israel frustrate him so he resign his prophetic work. Why are our eyes focused on the Lord? We, like Israel, im-plore the Lord for mercy, for we have sinned.

Second Reading: Paul was worried about his ego growing too large, but he had to have a certain amount of confidence in the face of other preachers who proclaimed false gospels. He attempted to steer the Corinthians away from the false preachers, and in order to do so, had to clearly validate his own ministry and the Gospel he preached. In the Old Testament, “thorns” symbolized one’s enemies, including Satan. Thus, when Paul faces weakness—including persecution—as when we do the Lord’s grace is sufficient for us. It is all we need. It makes us strong.

Gospel: following the healings of the woman with hemorrhages and Jairus’s daughter, Jesus and hisdisciples journeyed to his hometown. On the Sabbath, he taught in the synagogue where people question the source of his teachings and wisdom. Four questions populate this short Gospel reading. They center on Jesus’s identity for the people in the synagogue who at first rec-ognize his mighty deeds, then turn on him. Jesus’ response is the familiar words that acknowledge the only place a prophet has no honor is the place where he grew up. Jesus and his disciples move on from this place whose people lacked faith. Yet it is not that they did nothing there since Mark informs us they healed a few sick people. A majority’s lack of faith never silences the power of God in the face of a few who believe.

Next week: 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Amos 7:12-15; Psalm 85: 9-14; Ephesians 1:3-24; Mark 67-13

PARTNER PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS PARTNER PARISH ANNOU

LITURGY CORNER…. .SUNDAY, THE DAY OF THE LORD

Sunday is the original festival, the weekly celebration of Christ’s holy resurrection. Sunday is the day of the Eucharist, the day of the Church’s joy, the day of beginning again in the grace of Him who says, “Behold, I

make all things new” (Rev 21:5). The festivity of Sunday worship overflows into all of life. There is delight in the details: freshly pol-ished shoes, “Sunday best” clothes, flowers and wine for the Sunday dinner table. Allowing Sunday Mass to become one thing among others on a weekend checklist leads to a loss of “Eucharistic amazement.” Holy Mass is Sunday’s central event. All other things are arranged around it. The absolute priority given to Sunday Mass is an irreplaceable witness to the Kingdom God. The beauty of Sun-day Mass is an offering to God and a healing for the soul. The singing of priest, deacon, cantor, and people, the use of incense and lights, the sacred movement of bodies in worship, vesture in the appointed liturgical colors, the clear sound of the bell, the flowers that delight the eye and perfume the air — all these good things proclaim the splendor of the Mystery of Faith, each in its own way. In ad-dition to Sunday Mass, following an impetus given by the Second Vatican Council, there are cathedrals and parish churches around the world where the faithful return for Vespers, the Church’s solemn evening liturgy. The celebration of Vespers is often followed by a time of Eucharistic adoration. Having entered into Christ’s sacrifice in the morning, the Church returns at sunset to contemplate the glory of his Face, praying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent” (Lk 24:29).

WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR….…….

Come, Pray Before the Lord… A doration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Partner Parish takes place at St. Jo-

seph Church every Tuesday following the 8:30 A.M. Mass concluding with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 10:00 A.M. Part of the time af-ter exposition is spent in common prayer ( Rosary, Litany and the Chaplet to

the Divine Mercy). But what about the remaining time-usually 20-30 minutes?

During this time of silent adoration, you can:

1. Choose a Bible passage or a Psalm to read and meditate upon it. Pay attention to any-thing that prompts you and ask the Lord what he wishes for you to get from those read-ings. Listen to him carefully!

2. Read the life of a saint.

3. Sit quietly and simply “be” in the presence of the Lord. Tell him what it is on your mind, your difficulties, joys, sadness and disappointments. Again, listen carefully to what he wants to tell you.

St. John-Paul II said: “ It is pleasant to spent time with Him, to lie closer to his breast like the Beloved Disciple and to feel the infinite love present in His Heart...how can we not feel a renewed need to spend time in spiritual converse, in silent adoration in heartfelt love be-fore Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament?”

Fr. Matthew Kelly, founder of Dynamic Catholic, said: “ My whole spiritual journey began by sitting in Church each day for ten minutes. I know , Jesus was present. In that Church in Sydney, Australia where I grew up, there was a small sign below the tabernacle that said’ My Lord and my God.’ I was taught as an altar boy to say this every time I genuflected be-fore the tabernacle. And that ingrained in me, that small habit, the reality that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist.”

Give Tuesday Mass and Adoration a try. Our Lord will give you peace in your heart. He will continue to move in your life, even when you can’t see it.

Hope to see you next Tuesday!
