HTCC Swim Team July 5
DIVISIONAL WEEK!
Location: Botany Woods pool
HTCC Team Practice: Tuesday, July, 10, 4-5pm @ Botany
Woods
Divisional Meet: Saturday, July 14
10 & Under Session Arrive by: 7:00am
Warm Ups: 7:30am
Volunteers & Officials: Arrive by 8am
Parade, Anthem, Pledge, Prayer: 8:05am
Meet Start: 8:30am
11 & Up Session – warm ups start 30 minutes after Session 1
ends; these are estimated times; once the meet is seeded on
Tuesday, we can provide more accurate estimates.
Estimated Arrive by: 11am
Estimated Warm up: 11:30am
Estimated Volunteers & Officials: 12:30pm
Estimated Pledge, Anthem, Prayer (no parade): 12:35pm
Estimated Meet Start: 1pm
Parents – The tent area is for the swimmers only. If you are not a tent parent,
then please do not put your chair under the tent. You will be asked to move it. It
will be crowded in the tent area, plus swimmers from all teams will be walking by
to get to their tent area. Siblings not swimming may sit there, away from the fans.
The fan area is for the swimmers and tent parents who are working.
July 5 Divisional Parade
Due to the split meet, only the 10 & Unders will have a parade prior to the start of the meet.
Our parade theme is Olympics – after all, we do have a former teammate who qualified to swim
at the Olympic Trials this year. Dress in red/white/blue, carry small flags to wave, dress in your
best patriotic look.
Then someone will sing the National Anthem, and someone else will read the Swimmers Prayer.
After that the teams will parade off, except for the kids who are in the medley relay team.
Those kids need to bring their goggles onto the pool deck with them for the parade, so they can
go straight to clerk of course after the parade and line up for the relay.
For the 11 & Up session, someone will announce over the loudspeaker to come to the pool
deck. If you are in the medley relay, bring your goggles and cap with you. Once assembled on
the pool deck, we will have the national anthem, swimmers prayer, etc. The medley relay kids
will stay on the pool deck when it’s over. All others will return to the tent area.
National Anthem
We are looking for a soloist, duet, trio or musician that would like to sing or play the National
Anthem at the start of the 11 & Up meet. There will be music on a CD to accompany you.
Please email me if you are interested.
Volunteers
Here are the volunteers I have signed up for the Divisional meet. If I have not contacted you
about working this meet, and you usually work at the meets, then I am giving you a break on
this meet, and will be contacting you for C&C positions because I know you will be there with
me – and we will have a few positions to fill each day.
Please thank Penny Rice and Eileen Wells for their extra commitment and dedication to the
team and the Divisional meet. Penny is the Divisional Clerk of Course and is setting up the
entire meet – both sessions, all blue cards, labels and organizing it into 2 boxes, one for each
session. She will also run the Clerk of Course area for the morning session and make sure the
afternoon session is ready to run smoothly before calling it a day. Eileen is our DCO – Divisional
Computer Operator. She is inputting all the HTCC events, plus getting the files from the other
teams – merging the meet next week, will attend the seeding meeting to make any corrections
from all the teams, organize and print the heat sheet, then attend the full day of the Divisional
meet and be in charge of all the helpers who are inputting times from blue cards, then she will
close out the meet, and deliver the computer and all blue cards to the SAIL headquarters where
they will begin to tabulate all the results. Penny & Eileen deserve a big thank you from
everyone!!

Donuts & Ribbons
As a reminder there will be no donuts & ribbons party after this meet. There are no ribbons
given out for this meet—we are swimming to determine the winner of the Blue Division and to
determine the 40 fastest boys/girls in the county for each stroke. Those fastest kids will move
on to the Championships & Classics meet.
Concession Stand Fund-Raiser!
A big thanks to Damaris for running the concession stand at our home meets. I haven’t heard
the final tally yet of how much money was raised, but I saw a large stack of money to deposit
after the 6/28 meet. I will share this fund-raiser total in the next newsletter. And thanks to
everybody for contributing all the snacks and treats that were sold. Also thanks to the several
families who helped in the concession stand. We all appreciate it!
Intent To Swim Forms Are Finalized
Intent to Swim Form responses have been sent to the SAIL Computer Operator. What Eileen
had input and posted on the pool bulletin board last week is now official. If you have signed up
yes for Championships and yes for Classics, if you make it to those swim meets, you must swim
July 5 them. If you do not, you will be fined $25 for each event. If you signed up No on the Intent to
Swim form, and your child qualifies to swim at the Championship or Classics meet, they will not
be allowed to swim. They can still order a t-shirt, but they cannot swim at the meet. You have
until July 10, 5pm when I attend the seeding meeting to change your mind.
Divisional Stroke Selection
Strokes have been selected. They are posted at the pool. Please write your child’s strokes on
their arm with a Sharpie marker before you come to the Divisional meet on Saturday. This will
help the tent parents know what your child is swimming, and help the clerk of course in lining
them up. Also, if you write their first name on their shoulder in Sharpie marker, this will really
help the clerk of course in line up.
Divisional Heat Sheet Cover Competition and Ad Sales
Let your imagination soar! And design the winning heat sheet cover for the Blue Division. Last
year Jordan Vogt was the winner of this contest and earned a $25 prize. The rules are as
follows:
• Entries must be submitted in black ink on 8-1/2"x11" white paper.
• No computer generated art.
• No team names or insignia are permitted unless ALL teams are included.
• Should include “Blue Division 2012”.
• Will be printed on Blue card stock.
• The swimmer's name and team name should be listed on the BACK of the entry in
pencil.
• Entries need to be turned in to Linda Young on or before July 9th at 6pm. Voting will
take place at the seeding meeting on July 10th and you will be notified if you win.
The teams are:
• Holly Tree Country Club
• Neely Farm
• Foxcroft
• Botany Woods
• Pebble Creek/Half Mile Lake
We will also be selling ads in the Divisional Heat Sheet that will be seen by the families of 400+
swimmers! So start thinking about who you can sell those ads to. All money earned in ad sales
goes directly back to the team. And we need a new team tent!
The prices are:
• Full page - $100
• ½ page (horizontal or vertical) - $50
July 5 • ¼ page - $25
Many parents buy a good luck/swim hard ad for their kids or grandkids. This may be a good
way for the grandparents to support our team too!
Ads must be camera-ready. Email them to me in a pdf file by Monday, July 9th at 8pm. I have to
print them and take them to the seeding meeting on July 10th.

July 5 DIVISIONAL WEEK ACTIVITIES
To help the kids and parents get pumped up for the Divisional Meet, we have several fun
activities each day leading up to the meet on Saturday.
Canned Food Drive
We are doing a canned food competition all week to benefit the Golden Strip Emergency Relief
Agency. It’s the 10 & Unders with Coach Gene, versus the 11 & Ups with Coach Molly – who
will bring in the most food by the end of the week? There will be 2 containers – one for each
team. Let’s get the competition going on Monday morning and keep it going all week!!
Please bring canned food – or food that will stay fresh outside. Food packaged just in boxes,
like mac & cheese, may get a bit humid and soggy staying outside all week, so please consider
that before bringing your donation. Parents – please put the barrels of food in the bathrooms
after each practice so they stay out of the sun. The coaches appreciate your help with this.
Monday, July 9 Breakfast of Champions!
From 9:15 – 9:45, swimmers will enjoy a breakfast of champions on the cabana deck! We will
be serving fresh fruit, juice, muffins and bagels to all the swimmers.
Tuesday, July 10
Lunch with the Coaches!
Join the coaches for a fun lunch at Pop’s Restaurant on Main Street in Simpsonville, near the
Hardee’s. They will be there about 11:45am. Please let Katherine Davis know if you can join
them. Everyone is responsible for their own lunch.
Practice at Botany Woods Pool –
From 4-5pm our team, all age groups, will practice at Botany Woods pool. This is your only
chance for swimmers to practice their strokes at that pool – make sure they swim them at least
once, especially back stroke!! They have a shallow turn end – so please remind the kids to work
on their flip turns in that shallow end.
Chic fil-A Fund-raiser!
On the way home from Botany Woods, stop by the Chic fil-A on Woodruff Rd to pick up dinner
and support the team! A percentage of all sales that night will go to our team, if you tell them
that you are with the Holly Tree Swim Team.
Wednesday, July 11
The infamous shaving cream fight!! Bring your own can of shaving cream. They will start about
5:50pm and be done by 6:10pm. You must get hosed off before getting back into the pool.
Thursday, July 12
Tie-Dye Party! For those kids that have earned their Iron Man/Chick, they will receive their t-
shirt, which is white with blue lettering, at this party. They may then tie-dye that shirt. For
those kids that didn’t achieve IM/IC, we still want them to participate by bringing their own
July 5 white t-shirt to tie-dye.
5-6pm – Older kids will tie-dye shirts
6-7pm – Younger kids will tie-dye shirts
Parents – please stay and help your kids tie-dye!
Friday, July 13
Bring your yard signs!! We will store them away during the off-season.
Pasta Pump-Up Party and Car Decorating!!
Start pouring over those recipe books – Look for that favorite recipe that Grandma used to
make! It’s pasta pump-up time!! When we all make way too much food, and the kids carbo-
overload for the big meet!
Swim practice first – just a brief “warm-up and touch-the-water” practice for each age group.
10 & Unders swim 5-5:30pm
11 & Ups swim 5:30 – 6pm
5:30 – bring your food
6pm – dinner starts – SWIMMERS FIRST!! Please tell siblings who are not swimming that they
will have to wait until the swimmers have all been served first, then they may eat too. There
will be plenty – but the kids who have worked hard for this should go first.
We want every family to help contribute to this meal! Here are the meal assignments – they
tried to change them up from last year, so the same parents don’t get assigned the main course
every year. Based on your swimmers last name, please bring a dish to serve 6-8 people:
A-K Pasta
L-R Salad
S-Y Dessert
If your dish is hot, bring pot holders to set it on. Also bring a serving spoon, fork or whatever is
needed. And label everything so it goes home with you!
After we get done eating, we will give the kids green and white washable paint markers to write
on their car windows. We will only have 10 of each color, so they will have to share. Please
escort the younger kids across the street and help them to decorate your car windows for the
Divisional meet.
We will also announce the winners of the Canned Food Drive!
Sunday, July 15
2-4pm – Teen Car Wash
The teens are raising money to help pay for their White Water rafting trip. Come get the
window paint washed off your car before the banquet. They will be set up on the driveway
July 5 between the pool and tennis center. Anybody is welcome to get their car washed. The cost is
$10 per car, but they are taking contributions. Please come support the teens!!
6:30pm – End of the Season Banquet
We will have our End of the Season team banquet on Sunday, July 15 at 6:30pm. We will be in
the Club House Ballroom, so please dress appropriately. This means no denim, cut-offs, t-shirts
or swim suits. The menu will be: BBQ pork and chicken, Vegetable Lasagna (vegetarian), baked
beans, cole slaw, chips and drinks. All for only $6.50 per person. Kids 5 and Under eat free.
You cannot charge your meal to your HTCC account, nor does it count toward your monthly
minimum.
Wendy Dolven is taking the money and reservations for the end-of-the-season banquet and the
C&C pool party. Please find her on the pool deck to reserve your spot.
The video made of the guppy and hurricane teams will be playing, and will be available for sale
from Patriot Productions. The CD’s are $15 – bring cash or check to pay him directly. He will be
at our banquet from 6:15 – 7pm, then he is going to another team banquet.
We will also have some team t-shirts to sell. The printer did an over-run of size Large t-shirts,
the front side only. We are selling them for $5 each. I also have several sweatshirts that were
printed in the wrong color (white instead of green) and I will be selling them for $10 each
(regularly $18). We are limited to the inventory on hand.
After dinner, the coaches will give out team medals to each swimmer on both the Guppy and
Hurricane team, plus they will recognize the kids who achieved Iron Man/Chick with a special
certificate. Please stay until everyone has received their medal.
And finally, we will announce all the kids who earned a spot on the Championships and Classics
team. For those kids who do earn a spot – PARENTS bring your checkbook!! We will place
our order for Championships and Classics t-shirts that night and you will need to pay for them
then. We will not take payments later. This is your only opportunity to get a C&C t-shirt, so
please be ready. Also be thinking about what fun phrase you want to put on the back of your
shirt. If you have questions about this, please don’t hesitate to email me with questions or find
me on the pool deck to discuss.
C&C Pool Party!
On July 22, following the Classics swim meet, we will meet back at our pool for one last party.
The club will be serving a taco bar in the Cabana area for anybody on the Hurricane or Guppy
swim teams and their families. The cost is $6.50 per person, kids 5 & under eat free.
The coaches will then present all of the C&C swimmers with their medals (and 1st place t-shirts).
This party is for everyone to celebrate the accomplishments of our swimmers. Come join them
and their families in one last party!
July 5 SAIL at the Greenville Drive – Monday, July 30Th
Monday, July 30th will be SAIL night at the Greenville Drive game! The cost is $6.00 per person.
Nathalie Norris is collecting the money and taking ticket orders. Please find her on the pool
deck to order yours today. Last year we had 80+ swimmers and families there – it is always a
fun event. Please remember to wear your team shirt!
July 22 is the last day to order tickets in our group. Nathalie will receive the tickets from the
G’ville Drive sometime that week, and we will set a date and time to come meet her on the
pool deck to get yours. We will send out an email on this later with details.
The Divisonal Winners will be announced again at the game. So if we win our Division in either
Total Points or Quality Points like we did last year, the coaches will be presented with a banner
and trophy on the field. Below are some of the other activities from that night.
***All SAIL participants will be asked to meet on Field Street at 6:15 on Monday July 30th
, so
we can line them up for our Pre-Game Parade of Champions!!
***Honor Classic Winning Swimmers
o Swimmers who win their event at Classics will receive a complimentary
voucher/reserved seat to attend the July 30 game at Fluor Field
o Those swimmers will be announced/recognized during the game between
innings through an on-field recognition and videoboard announcement
***Honor Championships/Classics Participants
o Swimmers who qualified for championship and classics will receive a voucher
for complimentary ticket to the July 30 game with a paid adult (I’m not sure
how this is working yet, but will send more details when I have them)
Team photos & Video’s - Here is the link to the team photos taken by Carrie Garrett. Be careful to select the
correct team picture. One is modified for an 8x10 and one is 5x7. They are labeled when
you hover over them. Also, be sure to check the cropping on individual pictures
especially if you are ordering larger than a 4x6 . There is an “adjust” button to do
so…you don’t want any cropped heads. If you need help please contact me by email at
[email protected]. I enjoyed taking pictures of your children…thank you!!

- Photos - Art Young has taken lots of photos of the kids swimming and on the pool deck.
He has links on the homepage of the team website www.htccswim.com. Check them
out! Also posted are photo’s of Annie Gillig’s send-off to the Olympic Trials – she was so
surprised!
July 5 - Claudia Fischer has also sent us link to some photo’s she has taken at the meets and at
the Water Park. I haven’t looked at all her meet photo’s yet – but the water park
pictures are great!! There are several good ones of the kids – and mom’s!
- Video’s – the videographer from Patriot Productions will be at our team banquet on July
15 for an hour selling the video he took made of the team and guppies. They will be $15
each payable directly to him. Please make sure you bring cash or your check book to
buy this video – I’ve seen the trailers and it looks really fun!!
Website
Please check the website often. It has sign up charts for the meets. And sign up charts for the
activities. We pay extra for the website to have this sign-up capability – please use it!! Plus
there is information on what is happening during the week. And if someone gets some great
new photo’s of the kids swimming this year and sends them to me, we will try to put those on
the website too!
Divisional Swim Meet – What is it? And What to Expect
July 9 – 14th Last week of the season for the full team—Divisionals Week!
As you know, we are in the Blue Division along with Neely Farm, Foxcroft, Botany Woods and
Pebble Creek/Half Mile Lake. This year we are dividing the swim meet into two sessions based
on age group. The 10 & Unders will swim in the morning session which begins at 8:00am,
warm-ups will be determined on 6/25 and I will pass along later. The afternoon session will
have the 11 & up swimmers, start time TBD. There will be approximately 250 swimmers in each
session. I encourage everyone to come to warm-ups even if they are early. It will help your
child to really wake up and get their body percolating for the morning’s swim session. It will
also wake up their appetite so they can eat a healthy breakfast after warm-ups. That breakfast
will be the energy they draw on for their morning swims and will determine if they go fast or
slow.
Purpose of Divisionals
As the last meet of the season, the purpose is to determine the 40 fastest boys and girls in each
stroke and age group who will move on to Championships and Classics meet the following
weekend. This meet will also determine the winner of the Blue Division. This is why stroke
selection is so important and why the coaches will spend several hours reviewing every child’s
times and rankings for each stroke. They want to make sure that each child is swimming in
their fastest events so they have a chance to move on to Championships and Classics, plus we
need to have a swimmer in every event who could earn points for the team. Points are
awarded to the team for the swimmers who finish in the top 12 spots. Results will be posted at
Botany Woods for each event after it has been input into the computer. There will be 5 other
Divisional meets happening around the county that day. Once all the results are compiled, the
list of swimmers moving on to C&C will be distributed about 4pm on Sunday, July 15 to the
coaches. We will announce the C&C swimmers at the end of the season banquet on July 15.
July 5
Summer of 2013
I have done this for 2 years now, and would like to see someone take an interest in starting to
learn how to run the team. I hope somebody is thinking about it – if not, please start thinking
about it. Somebody will need to walk through this process with me for 2 seasons before they
are ready to do it on their own. And it really should be more than 1 person managing the team.
I haven’t talked with Lisa Wade yet, but she has done a fantastic job as treasurer! I hope she
will do it again next season!
Laurie Drayton, Celeste Webb, and Katherine Davis have done a fantastic job organizing all our
spirit parties, Kick-off and End-of-Season Parties, Iron Man/Chick activities, donuts & ribbons
each week, post meet parties, Divisonal Week activities, and more!! Please tell them thank you
for all their hard work. They have made our season lots of fun!!
Kelly Welch and Bridgette Reppening have stepped up to be our Guppy Directors for next
season! I know they will have that group just as organized as Damaris and Mary Ellen had them
this year. Please thank them for making the guppy season fun!
Anybody else who wants to take on a larger role with the team, please contact me. We could
always use your help. Thanks everyone for a great season!
