March 19th, 2020 - March 19th, 2021
Dear Cathedral Parishioners, You may be aware that my last day as Office Manager for St. Francis Xavier Cathedral was June 30th. I wish to sincerely thank all of you for the very humble opportunity to have served this church & our parish family in many capacities. 28 years ago, in 1991, Msgr. Peter Klauck offered me the position of Cathedral Sacristan & thus began my service to this magnificent church & its people. In 2001, after having worked three years under Msgr. Roy Klister, I began 9 years of service at The Diocese of Green Bay as the Administrative Assistant for the Lay Ministry Formation Department. Here I gained much of my experience I would need to run an office. During these nine years I continued helping our parish in whatever capacity it needed. In 2011, Fr. John Girotti hired me back as Administrative Assistant in the Cathedral parish office. Over the next four years, I gained even more office experience. Then on August 1, 2014, Fr. Joe Dorner asked me to be the Cathedral Office Manager. With the assignment of Fr. Brian Belongia, a year ago, I have continued in this position. It has been my honor & privilege to hold this position for the last six years. I have gotten to know so many people & have been able to wear many different hats. There were a few bumps along the way, but for the most part, I have truly enjoyed service to this community & parish family! It is with a heavy heart that I step down from this position, but at the same time, it is time for me to take a new path on my life’s journey. My husband, Paul, & I are looking forward to being snowbirds in Florida. It has been a lifelong dream of Paul’s, to work at Disney World, & I think it is time to make his dream come true! All of you will be in my heart & prayers & don’t worry, we will always be members of Cathedral Parish family. We will see you whenever we return to Wisconsin. All for the Praise, Honor & Glory of God, Sonia Hitt
THANK YOU, SONIA AND VICKI!
Over 15 years ago, Sonia Hitt served as the sacristan at my ordination. Then, when I was assigned as the Summer Administrator for the summers of 2012-2014, she was serving in the role of administrative assistant. More recently, since 2015, Sonia has served the parish as the office manager. Her particular job extended beyond that of a simple office manager, but also to assisting the rector and pastor with the basic administration of our beautiful cathedral. Her service to the parish has been multivalent and she probably knows more about the parish and its operations than anyone. She has worked tirelessly and conscientiously, usually quietly and behind the scenes, to keep our Cathedral running smoothly and the pastor in line. In many ways, she was the glue that held us all together for many years. It will be difficult to imagine the Cathedral office without Sonia as a part of it. I am extremely grateful to Sonia, not only for all of her dedication to the Cathedral, but also for her assistance to me during my first year as pastor. Her presence and knowledge really helped to make my transition from Seymour to here a year ago almost flawless. Her experience has also helped me to engage my other role more efficiently as Judicial Vicar for the Diocese without having to worry, too much, about Cathedral operations and staff. Sonia will be greatly missed as she embarks on the next journey of her life: retirement. I would also like to thank Vicki Matuszak, who is also retiring as our Cathedral bookkeeper. Vicki has been with us since at least 2012, when I began serving as the summer administrator, while Fr. Girotti engaged his summer classes in canon law. As the bookkeeper, she handled all of the financial duties, such as paying the bills, processing, the payroll, putting together budgets, and keeping all of the sacrificial giving in order. Many of you may not have actually met Vicki, as she had been working late afternoons and early evenings, usually after office hours, working hard to keep our books balanced. She has been a tremendous resource to the parish and to me as the pastor. Bookkeepers of Vicki’s quality are hard to find. Having an able bookkeeper has made my role as pastor much less stressful. She has most recently guided us through the process of applying for and utilizing the funds from the Payroll Protection Plan (PPP). She will be greatly missed as she begins her retirement, that she has most certainly earned. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 guidelines, we will be unable to hold a special gathering for Sonia and Vicki before they officially retire. If anyone would like to send them a personal card or note, you may send them directly to them, drop the cards in the collection basket, or drop them off at the parish office and we will be sure they are properly delivered. Thank you, Sonia, and Vicki for your service to St. Francis Xavier Cathedral and for the great number of things that you both have done for our parish and diocese that are far too numerous to count. We will miss you and thank God for sending you to serve us at our beautiful Cathedral. With gratitude for their years of excellent ministry to the Cathedral, Fr. Brian

INDEPENDENCE DAY
This weekend throughout the United States, we celebrate our freedom. Our rights are protected
and opportunities abound. We recognize that freedom has a cost, one we celebrate and honor on
days such as this. It's good to honor those who fight for our country, who may well pay the
ultimate price for the liberties we're afforded. As faithful Catholics, we recognize that there is
more to freedom than simply being at liberty to make our lives what we want them to be.
St. John Paul II reminds us: "Freedom is not just doing what we can, it is doing what we ought."
We become freer within ourselves and within our relationships when we choose what is right and
good. When we choose sin, we become trapped in egoism - less free, not more. This Independ-
ence Day, let's continue to pursue virtue and good character and encourage others to do this
same.
