Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

EPISTLE LESSON Romans 7:14-25a 14 For we know that the law is spiritual—but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. 15 For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I do not do what I want—instead, I do what I hate. 16 But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good. 17 But now it is no longer me doing it, but sin that lives in me. 18 For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For I want to do the good, but I cannot do it. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want! 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me. 21 So, I find the law that when I want to do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God in my inner being. 23 But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

*HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 11:25-30 The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew, the eleventh chapter.

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

HYMN OF THE DAY GOD OF GRACE AND GOD OF GLORY LSB 850 VV. 1, 2, 4

Text and tune: Public domain

MESSAGE Pastor Ben

*THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one

Page 8: July 5, 2020 + 8:30 am · Fifth Sunday after Pentecost June 28, 2020 + 8:30 am PRELUDE Before You, Lord, We Bow Healey Willan WELCOME *ENTRANCE HYMN BEFORE YOU, LORD, WE BOW LSB 966

substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY CLASS This morning, Lyle continues the class, "What's So Amazing about Grace?" Today's session: Grace Put to the Test: Grace in the Face of Disagreement. As this class is done by Zoom, you will need an invitational link to participate. Please email Carol Keeler for this link. IN-HOUSE WORSHIP BEGINS JULY 11 Worship in the Sanctuary, Auditorium, and outdoors at Faith Lutheran Church begins Saturday, July 11! The Faith Reopening Workgroup has worked extensively since April to make sure that in-house worship will be done safely and with proper social distancing. The following link has all the details and information about reopening: https://faithpenfield.org/resources/reopening KEY POINTS • Worship signup for everyone (both online and call-in)

begins at the same time: 6 days prior to the worship date, at the worship time.

• Please bring your own mask. If you need one, extras are available.

• To demonstrate Christian concern and love for others, and to be compliant with state requirements, please wear your mask (nose covered and mask tucked under your chin) the entire time you are in the building. This means during worship also for both singing and speaking.

• No printed bulletins will be available. Please download the bulletin onto your phone or tablet to use during worship, or bring your own printed copy. The order of worship will also be on the projector screens in the Sanctuary and Auditorium - and will continue to be on our livestream feed, too. If you are impeded from viewing the text on the screen, please contact Carol Keeler to arrange for a large print bulletin to be mailed to you.

• While there will be a place for you to physically put your offerings after worship in the building, you are encouraged to

either mail your offerings in during the week to the church office or to give online.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Our online VBS begins this week. This year, we will send out a VBS lesson each week. If you would like to follow along with what our VBS kids are doing, each lesson includes Bible readings, lesson videos and Contemporary Christian songs that tie to the themes of the lesson. This week's lesson is about Joseph and his brothers and can be found at the following link (the lesson also contains a link to directions for picking up materials to assist with the weekly lessons at home): https://www.smore.com/y6xsa At home Sunday School lessons are archived on the church website and will continue to be emailed to families. They are posted and emailed out prior to worship each Sunday. In addition, online educational resources for families to use at home may also be found on the church website. Educational resources: https://faithpenfield.org/resources/at-home-educational-resources Sunday School Lessons: https://faithpenfield.org/ministries/childrens-family Livestream and AV Task Force Updates To prepare for in-person worship starting July 11, the AV Task Force has moved the webcam back to its "default" location in the balcony. Over the past four months, the webcam and livestream booth was located in the middle aisle of the sanctuary. These things had to move so we can have worshipers in the sanctuary again. The AV Task Force is also finalizing a proposal to help enhance both in-house and livestream worship experiences. Many thanks to all who make our livestream worship enjoyable and meaningful!

Faith Lutheran Youth (FLY) Announcements

It’s time to come together again! We are so excited to announce that in-person FLY events are coming back! Youth entering 8th grade through college students are invited to our FLY Hang Times happening on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of July & August from 12:30-1:30 in the church’s backfield.

Our #1 job is to keep you all safe, so here’s how we’re going to do it: -Face masks will be required (bring your own) whenever we’re not eating. -Everyone will maintain

at least 6 feet away from people not from their households. -Hand sanitizers will be available in the backfield. -Church bathrooms will be open for 1 person at a time. -In case of bad weather, the event will be cancelled (& communicated through email & Remind texts). -Everyone will bring their own packed lunch & lawn chair or blanket. Together, we’ll eat our lunches and play socially distant games (like Charades & Mafia)! We hope and pray these FLY Hang Times will allow us to reconnect in-person in a safe way! If you have any questions, please contact Vicar Peter Johnson at [email protected]. If you decide not to attend a FLY Hang Time, don’t worry - no-one will judge you! We’ll offer a Zoom devotion on the 2nd & 4th

Sundays at 9:45am for anyone who wants to connect virtually. That link will be emailed in July. We miss you! We love you! More importantly, God loves you! 9th Grade Confirmation Projects Due to the pandemic, quarantine, and large size of our 9th grade confirmation class - the Faith Art & Faith Statement projects will be due by July 26. Videos of each confirmand’s presentation will be played during various worship services throughout August & potentially September. A schedule of all of the videos will be published in the August Faith Notes. When government and health officials deem it’s safe for large gatherings to begin worshiping together in-person, Faith staff will schedule Confirmation Sunday and will notify all 9th graders and their families of the date (many weeks in advance). Confirmation Project Zoom Meetings To help you with your projects, all incoming 9th graders will be invited to Zoom with Peter TODAY @ 9:45am. He will email you the Zoom link. FLY Zoom Schedule: July 5 - 9th Grade Zoom @ 9:45am July 8 - College Student/Young Adult Zoom @ 8pm July 12 - Incoming 8th - 12th Graders Zoom Devotion @ 9:45am July 22 - College Student/Young Adult Zoom @ 8pm July 26 - Incoming 8th - 12th Graders Zoom Devotion @ 9:45am Help FLY Make a Video! This summer, our church is doing a virtual Vacation Bible School called, “Our Lighthouse!” The theme is inspired by one of FLY’s favorite songs, “My Lighthouse!” The song and this year’s VBS is about how Jesus is our light amidst the darkness and storms of life. Steve & Carrie Ford (Faith’s Children’s Ministry Directors) have asked FLY to do something amazing…

Page 16: July 5, 2020 + 8:30 am · Fifth Sunday after Pentecost June 28, 2020 + 8:30 am PRELUDE Before You, Lord, We Bow Healey Willan WELCOME *ENTRANCE HYMN BEFORE YOU, LORD, WE BOW LSB 966

Every FLYer is invited to record themselves lip-syncing and doing the motions to “My Lighthouse!” Davey Young will create a montage of everyone’s videos and then the video will be shared with all of our VBS kids this summer! To participate in this fun video, please: -Film yourself (& other family members & friends) lip-syncing and dancing to this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA8VtUPgqTc -Make sure you’re filming in landscape mode (horizontal) -Please email the video to Davey Young ([email protected]) by Sunday, July 5 (end of the day). *Note that Davey will not be using anyone’s vocals - whew! ;) Anyone who has been to a Sunday Night FLY should know the actions to this song! Feel free to grab your Jenga blocks, too… hehe! Thanks for brightening up the summer, FLY!
