Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 100 Gospel MT 11:25-30
Spiritual Reflection:
Every once in a while, in the seminary, I would
receive a letter informing me that an anonymous
benefactor had stepped forward and paid my
tuition for the year. Still to this day I do not
know who this anonymous benefactor was.
There is a part of me that wishes that the
benefactor would have revealed who he or she
was to me so that I could properly thank him or
her and so I could let them know how much I
love being a priest. Today’s Gospel makes it clear
that God the Father was Jesus’ benefactor and
that Jesus was extremely grateful for all that God
had given Him. The life of Christ reveals to us
that God is our benefactor also. Every good gift
we have comes from God. Do we show God our
gratitude? Jesus informs us that God’s yoke is
easy and light which means doing things without
God will be more difficult because we are
rejecting divine assistance.
Spiritual Questions:
1. What aspect of God’s revelation is most
surprising to you?
2. What does it mean to you that God wishes
to reveal Himself to you?
3. Do you thank God for the revelations of his
love?
4. What does it mean to you that you have God
as your benefactor?
5. What do you praise God for?

addional weeks. Thank you.
From the Pastor notas del párroco 3
1. Coronavirus Update
The archbishop has given permission for us
to begin using our buildings for meetings
again provided that we follow the rules of
the county that we preside in. We want to
go above and beyond in regards to keeping
everyone safe due in part because of our
year-round Early Childhood Learning
Center. The following are the rules for
using indoor parish spaces for meetings:
St. Joseph Building Use (Phase II of Re-
Opening)
1. All use of parish facilities must be
approved by the parish office. No one
may simply come up, find a room, and
use it.
2. All groups must take attendance,
including names and phone numbers of
everyone attending the meeting for
contact tracing if needed. Groups should
place attendance sheets in the parish
office door slot before leaving the
grounds.
3. People using parish facilities must be
mindful and keep the six-foot social
distancing requirement recommended by
health officials.
* Each meeting space will be equipped
with a six-foot piece of PVC pipe
labeled “social distance” to assist in
arranging rooms.
* Anyone caught not maintaining the
six-foot social distancing regulation by
a staff member may be asked to end
their meeting and leave the parish
grounds immediately.
* There will be a door-hanger on each
door or on a clip outside each room or
meeting space. One side will say
something like “Go” which means the
room is ready to be used and the other
side will stay “Stop” meaning that area
has not been disinfected yet.
4. Current guidelines call for 50%
occupancy of spaces and the necessity of
maintaining six-foot distancing
protocols.
5. Masks are required to enter a parish
building within the Archdiocese of St.
Louis. While the archdiocese still
strongly recommends the use of masks
throughout events, mask-wearing, once
inside, will remain optional as long as six
-foot distancing remains in place.
6. There will be a bucket of cleaning
supplies in each room. Please use them to
make a preliminary sanitizing of the area
before leaving the room or space.
Someone will be by later to do a deeper
clean.
7. Please no food or drink inside our
buildings – if your group would like to
bring in some outside food please consult
Julie Quillo first in order to find out what
the current guidelines are.
2. Coronavirus Changes (Updated 6/14)
a. 4PM Mandatory Mask Mass
In an effort to accommodate as many
people as possible with many different
preferences, we have decided to make our
4PM Mass on Saturdays a Mandatory
Mask Mass, meaning that we will be
requiring everyone who comes to the
4PM Mass to keep their masks on
throughout the entire Mass. At all other
Masses, masks are optional once you reach
your pew. Please wear a mask on your way
in and out of Church.
b. Sign-Up Genius The Archdiocese and
the CDC have asked that parishes have an
online registration for each Sunday Mass to
help with contact tracing. We would
appreciate it if you would go to our parish
website, www.stjoemanchester.org, follow
the link to the sign-up genius, and sign up
for the Mass that you plan to attend. If
someone tests positive for COVID-19 and
tells the CDC that they were at “such-and-
such” Mass, we will then be able to inform
you and you can take the necessary
precautions. If you come to Mass and have
not signed up ahead of time, please check
in with an ambassador in the back of
church. Otherwise we cannot be
responsible for informing you if someone
who attended the same Mass has tested
positive.
c. Kneelers When you are in Church
(other than for Mass) we are asking you to
please leave your kneeler down when you
leave. This will allow us to know what
areas of the Church we need to clean and
sanitize again. If you come into the Church
and you find a kneeler down, please leave it
down and sit in another spot. We plan to
clean the Church on the weekdays between
9AM and 10AM and then again around
3PM - 4PM.
3. Sausage Supper
We are moving ahead with plans for our
Annual Sausage Supper. This year our
Sausage Supper will be on SATURDAY,
OCOTBER 10
th
. We are excited to have
Mr. Rich Pingleton serve as our Sausage
Supper Chairman this year. We really
want to make this year’s sausage supper
stand out so we are inviting everyone to
consider attending a special meeting
August 6
th
at 7PM in the Parish Center.
Sausage Supper is a great way for us to
build community.
4. Annual Catholic Appeal
The archdiocese has decided to go ahead
with this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal.
When I first heard about this decision I
was really angry so I called the director of
the Annual Catholic Appeal. As we talked,
he explained to me that the Annual
Catholic Appeal is needed now more than
ever because the Annual Catholic Appeal is
what allows the Archdiocese to fund so
many charitable outreaches. The Annual
Catholic Appeal helps fund the Respect
Life Apostolate which in turn helps fund
Post Abortive Healing Ministries such as
Project Rachel, Project Joseph, and
Rachel’s Vineyard as well as pregnancy
resource centers. The Annual Catholic
Appeal helps fund the Rural Parish
Workers whom we team up with at
Christmas to assist the town of Fertile,
MO. Another area that the Annual
Catholic Appeal assists with is the caring
for retired priests. I encourage you to
consider making a donation to the Annual
Catholic Appeal today from your heart.
5. Lily and Hammer Club
Participation in the Lily and Hammer Club
has helped us tackle the big issues of
replacing our church’s heating and air-
conditioning unit, renovating our Early
Childhood Learning Center, and other
smaller needed repairs. On behalf of your
fellow parishioners, I ask you to please
consider joining the Lily and Hammer Club
for the 2020-2021 year. Remember that
membership in the club is limited to four
hundred people and only costs $100. Our
monthly raffles will begin on the third
Sunday of July. To join the Lily and
Hammer Club, go to our website, click
ONLINE GIVING and scroll down to the
Lily and Hammer Club. As I write this
note, I am keenly aware that not everyone
who may desire to participate will be able
to this year because of contributions to the
Legacy Wall and the effects of the
Coronavirus. While it would be nice to sell
all four hundred spots, we would be
ecstatic to sell at least one hundred spots.
This would allow us to cover the Lily and
Hammer prize money and to continue
ongoing maintenance and repair projects.
Thank you for your generous support of St.
Joseph Parish. Know that your donation
will be a big help in allowing St. Joseph
Parish continue the amazing work it does.
“O God our creator… through the
power and working of your Holy
Spirit, you call us to live out our
faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving
truth of the Gospel to every
corner of society.”
- United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops “Prayer for Religious Liberty”
For months the covid-19 virus has
dramatically altered everyday
living. Our St. Louis council
continues to recommend
suspended ‘in-person home visits’
to our neighbors in need. This
policy will likely stay in effect
through August. However, we are
still making phone calls and
‘virtual visits’. We are helping our
neighbors pay housing, utility and
many other bills. If you or
someone you know needs help
with food or financial assistance
please call our St. Vincent de Paul
office phone at 636-779-5616. All
calls are confidential. We pray for
God’s loving grace and
protection.

Faith & Film
Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Synopsis: The movie begins informing us that the evil Emperor Palpatine has somehow survived
the explosion of the second Death Star. Kylo Ren strikes a deal with the Emperor. The Emperor
will give Kylo Ren an incredible armada of Star Destroyer ships and in return Kylo Ren must kill
the heroine of the saga Rey. Rey and her rebel friends must find a Sith wayfinder and use it to
find the planet of Exegol. Exegol is the place where the fleet of Star Destroyers are docked and
where the Emperor is. After finding the wayfinder Rey confronts the Emperor with the help of a
newly converted Kylo Ren. Spoiler alert, the good guys win when Rey uses the emperor’s own
Force Energy back on him killing him. The other heroes are able to destroy the enemy fleet and
save the universe.

Spiritual Insight:
The major plot twist in the movie reveals that Rey, the heroine, was actually the granddaughter
of the evil emperor. Upon discovering this, Rey feels that she is destined to turn evil and harm
all of her friends. As I watched the movie and saw Rey come to understand that her family of
origin did not control her future, I began to think about how many problems in life extend from
the fact that we all come from imperfect families. It also made me think of how proud I am of
my brothers and sisters. We grew up in a house where my dad was known for losing his temper
but I have never heard my brothers and sisters raise their voice to their kids. They are not
allowing how they grew up shape who they are now. For most of us there are good qualities
that we received from our family of origin and we should do everything we can to nurture them
and pass them onto the next generation. For me, I think of how loving, caring, and forgiving my
mother is and I desire to imitate her in those things. We cannot choose our families but we can
choose how they shape us. I think the turning point for Rey was when she discovered that Leia
was willing to train her to be a Jedi despite knowing who Rey’s grandfather was.

nd
Spiritual Insight:
Kylo Ren did the unthinkable in Star Wars XVI: The Force Awakens when he killed his father
Han Solo. In this movie, he turns away from the dark side and embraces the side of good. This
spiritual story is all about exploring the idea of how far one must go to be unredeemable. We
believe that God is always willing to forgive us if we are willing to ask. Catholics stand firmly
opposed to the idea of predestination. Predestination is the idea that God, upon creating you,
destined you to go to heaven or hell. We just live out the drama. As Catholics we believe that
we have a choice in this life by choosing to live the virtues of the kingdom of heaven now. Our
actions and beliefs do have eternal weight. The more sins we commit the more we will end up in
hell. In the last chapter of Mathew’s Gospel, we see how the sheep and goats ae separated by
what they did or not do in this life.

rd
Spiritual Insight:
During a pivotal moment of the movie, Poe Dameron, the leader of the Resistance, inspires his
rebels by declaring: “First Order wins by making people think they are alone. We are not alone.”
When I heard this quote I remembered what an older priest whom I respected greatly told me.
He said, “The Devil only has two lies. The first is that you are alone and the second is that you
are not good enough.” He went on to explain that they are lies because Jesus is Emmanuel, “God
with us” and with God all things are possible. I do think Poe’s insight is correct in that evil tries
to convince us that we are the only ones who are striving to do the good or that the task that
God wants us to do is just not humanly possible. God, though, will not abandon us and has
already defeated our greatest enemy – sin and death. I believe this also speaks to why Catholics
believe that Church is so important and why the Mass is an obligation for us. We remind
ourselves that we are part of God’s family at Mass and that He has conquered our greatest
enemies.

th
Spiritual Insight:
There is one insight in the movie I would not have known if I had not read an article on “hidden
Easter eggs” in the movie. The author pointed out that, at the end of the movie, Rey is the first
character to watch a sunrise and that symbolizes the new beginning she now has. In watching
the “Son rise,” the apostles and disciples had a new start also. This same new start is offered to
us every time we acknowledge the “Son rise.” Even more striking is that there are two suns on
the planet Tatooine and the Son of God rises twice at Mass, once when the priest elevates the
host and then again when he elevates the precious blood.

As the universal Church begins a transition back to the celebration of public liturgies, many are still mindful of the need to practice
social distancing and have expressed concerns about using worship aids that have been handled by others. Aware of these concerns,
some dioceses are eliminating printed missalettes and encouraging parishioners to download digital editions or to carry a personal
worship aid. In response, MAGNIFICAT is offering special $5 subscriptions to enable the faithful to follow the liturgy with
personal copies of either a printed or digital edition of MAGNIFICAT. Details at www.magnificat.com/free.

A few items to note: All the faithful are dispensed from
the obligation of the Easter Duty and the obligation to
attend Mass on Sunday through June 30, 2020. The
faithful are obliged to wear a mask (or other face covering)
upon entering the church and during the celebration of
Mass, except while seated in the pew and for the brief
moment of receiving Holy Communion. Attendees will be
counted as they enter and attendance may be limited to
assure compliance with social distancing requirements. All
hymnals and missalettes have been removed from the
pews and stored for the duration of the pandemic. No
song sheets or other worship aids will be distributed. The
faithful are encouraged to bring their own missals or
hymnals for use during the celebration of Mass. Restroom
facilities are reserved for emergency use only. Please use
the restroom at home before arriving at the church. The
Sunday Mass recorded at St. Joseph is available on the
parish website. Daily Masses (Monday through Saturday)
from Bishop Barron’s private chapel are also available on
the parish website.
