July 30th, 2013 Volume 2013 | 8th Edition FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF CHULA VISTA 1 Making New and Stronger Disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformaon of the WORLD. Director of Spanish Language Ministries With great excitement SPRC announces that Leonor Garrison has been hired as the Director of Spanish Language Ministries at FUMC.CV. Leonor has been an integral part of the Spanish Language Ministry since its inception, often fulfilling pastoral duties as an extension of or substitute for Pastor Luis. Leonor has also been employed at FUMC.CV for 8 years as the Director of Children’s Ministries. We are sad that she will be leaving this position, but tremendously excited she will be stepping into a new role on our church staff. In recent years Leonor has increased her teaching and preaching responsibilities in the Spanish Language Ministry and has also been instrumental in developing the Alpha Ministries within this portion of the congregation. Leonor was chosen as the strongest candidate among many due to her proven ability to gather people, to deploy people in ministry, to teach and preach with passion, her spiritual grounding in the real world and her obvious knowledge of and love for the ministries of FUMC.CV. Leonor will make this staff transition in mid August (hiring processes are already underway for a new Director of Children’s Ministries) and will be serving in a half time capacity with her full focus on growing a vibrant Spanish Language Ministry at FUMC.CV. If you are wondering, having Leonor continue as Director of Children’s Ministry would simply not work because of the Sunday morning responsibilities she would have in both areas of ministry; this means SPRC is hard at work providing for staff leadership that is left open due to Leonor’s move. If you are looking for Leonor in the office, you will not find her at the familiar location in the front office, rather she will move offices and be located in the Spanish Ministry Office next to Pastor Brian’s. Congratulations Leonor, our prayers are with you and with the future of Spanish Language Ministry at FUMC.CV. Director of Children’s Ministry Staff Opening Due to the transition of Leonor Garrison to Director of Spanish Language Ministries, we are in the process of filling another staff position. Are you or do you know someone who has a passion for children’s spiritual growth, is great working with volunteers, has keen organizational skills, wants to work in a team atmosphere with other spiritual leaders, has a demonstrative faith in Jesus Christ and is looking for a part time (20 hours weekly) position? If so go to www.fumccv.org/open-positions/ to find out more information and submit a resume. We are seeking the right person to fill this position immediately.

New Alpha Course Beginning September 8th We're all searching for more. What is the point of life?

Why is there suffering in the world? Is forgiveness possible?

FUMC.CV will be hosting The Alpha Course with classes beginning the week of September 8th.

We are inviting everyone to our Invitational Dinner on August 25th in the Fellowship Hall. There will be

food, music and a live talk on "Is There More To Life than This" given by our own Michael Schuck.

What is Alpha?

The Alpha course is a practical introduction to the Christian faith that gives guests an opportunity to explore the

meaning of life. Alpha is fun, relaxed and totally non-pressured (that's probably why over 19 million people around

the world have already done it). COME ON!

What Happens When Men Mentor Men? Men's Ministry Class, Disciples Lounge

August 28, 2013 – September 25, 2013.

Many men, especially younger men, are in chaos. They don’t

know who they are, what their lives are about, or what to do

about it. They need a helping hand. And even men not in chaos

could use a trusted friend and adviser. But a lot of mature men

feel awkward about the whole concept of mentoring. They aren’t sure what it is, why

it’s important, what’s involved, or how to get started. By the end these 4 weeks you

will be empowered to make, and receive, huge investments that can change your

life and the lives of other men.

FUMC.CV July Recap

United Methodist 101 On June 30th we gathered for More than Sunday Supper with

Pastor Brian and summer intern, Darin, to learn more about our

Wesleyan roots and the current standing and organization of

the United Methodist church. We have a rich history as a

denomination, and are blessed to be in ministry with brothers

and sisters across the globe in this world-wide connection!

4th

of July– All Church Summer Celebration Sue Foley and her committee did it again. What a great time

we had on the Quad celebrating our joy in the freedom we

share in this country. We are especially thankful for the

freedom to worship as we are individually called. We shared

this in a shared worship (all four services) and then in the

celebration after.

What’s Up Zak Music and Drama Camp The Fellowship Hall was packed on July

14th for the 11:00 am service to see and

hear the story of Zacchaeus presented by

the participants of the Music and Drama

Camp. The musical was entitled “What’s

Up Zak” We met beggars, people in

power, and of course Zacchaeus who was

searching for Jesus.

New Members To the right are the newest members of our congregation.

Following the completion of our latest Inquirer's Course

each of these folks professed their faith and took vows of

membership. We welcome these folks and celebrate that

God has brought them as disciples and servants

here in our midst. Pictured from left to right- Teresa Elders,

Katherine Stiff, Chuck & Jackie Elbel, Jennifer Fuentecilla, and

Nadine Varga

Bilingual VBS We had an amazing time with our Bilingual VBS. We had 51 kids, 35

volunteers between our congregation and also with some parents that

wanted to stay and help us out. Thank you to all who helped out for this

VBS with your prayers, snack & supplies donations and with your time.

present in. Enjoy amazing women who share the same

life experiences and dreams that you do! Total amount

is $200. Space is very limited to keep it intimate!

Registration deadline is August 4th. Please feel free to

Family means everything -- this is true in the good times we

join with family to celebrate the victories of life and this is

true in the rough times when we need support and

encouragement for the next step of life. One of the most

important tasks we have in life is caring for our family....our

children in their growing years, our parents in their aging

years and all of the other stages in between. This sermon

series will focus on various Biblical Stories that will

challenge our definition of family, encourage the work we

do within our own family, realign our priorities when it

comes to family values and finally open our eyes to the

much larger family (the human family) Jesus commanded

us to love and serve.
