AAA Word From the Fr. Alex
BOWING AND GENUFLECTING BEFORE THE ALTAR Both bowing and genuflecting are the signs of veneration and reverence. Bowing is a gesture of
showing one’s humbleness. Especially, when one bows before God, he surrenders himself to the will of
God.
Caesarius of Arles (ca. 470-542), in his sermon ‘an admonition to kneel for prayer and to bow at the
blessing’, writes:
My brothers and sisters, I ask that as often as you pray at the Altar you bow your heads. Doing so, you will
avoid what was written about the Pharisee (Lk 18, 10-14) who, standing erect, praised his own merits.
Behen say that the Christian Altar is also the throne of God. Here on the Altar Christ, the divine King be-
comes present on earth through the Eucharistic Sacrifice. The Altar has always been considered the throne
of Christ. So, we have another reason for saying, ‘The Altar is Christ’, for the throne symbolizes the person
of the ruler. The Christian ought to approach the Altar-throne with a more profound reverence than the
Jewish high priest approached the Holy of holies.
Behen tries to explain the importance of the veneration of the Altar taking the Eastern Church prac-
tices. The aspect of reverence to the Altar is more clearly expressed in the Eastern Church.
The most characteristic feature of the Eastern Church is the iconostasis, an elaborate screen or wall, entirely
cutting off any view of the sanctuary or Altar. Directly behind the Holy Door of the iconostasis is the Altar,
the ‘throne’. The Eastern Christian is so filled with reverence and even fear of the Altar that he stands at a
distance from it. No one below a deacon dare touch the Altar. And even the deacon dares to approach the
Altar through the Holy Door only at certain specified times. This mystic veneration of the Altar is such a
part of the Eastern spirituality.
The Sacred Congregation for Rites, in the Second Instruction on orderly carrying out
the Sacrosanctum Concilium, reduced repetition of the gestures, and said about the genuflection of the cele-
brant: The celebrant genuflects only: (a) On going to or leaving the Altar if there is a tabernacle containing
the blessed sacrament; (b) after elevating the host and the chalice; (c) after the doxology at the end of the
canon; (d) at communion, before the words Panem caelestem accipiam; (e) after the communion of the
faithful, when he has placed the remaining hosts in the tabernacles. All other genuflections are omitted.
The above instruction was given in 1967 when the Tabernacle was still placed on the
Altar. In the book, the Ceremonial of Bishops, numbers 68-69 we see about the signs of
reverence to the Altar during and outside the liturgy in the Church.
A bow signifies reverence and honor toward persons or toward objects that represent per-
sons. There are two kinds of bows, a bow of the head and a bow of the body:
(a) A bow of the head is made at the name of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the
saint in whose honor the mass or the Liturgy of the hours is being celebrated.
(b) A bow of the body, or a deep bow, is made: to the Altar if there is no tabernacle with
the blessed sacrament on the Altar; to the bishop, before and after incensation, as indicat-
ed in No. 91; whenever it is expressly called for by the rubrics of the various liturgical
books (No. 68).
A genuflection, made by bending only the right knee to the ground, signifies adoration, and is therefore re-
served for the blessed sacrament, whether exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, and for the holy cross from
the time of the solemn adoration in the Liturgical celebration of the Easter Vigil (No. 69).
The same document insists in number 72, “A deep bow is made to the Altar by all who enter the sanctuary,
leave it, or pass before the Altar”. In the General Instruction of the Roman Missal we see that the kissing of
the Altar before and at the end of the mass always accompanied with a deep bow to the Altar.

FOCUS: Father, we frequently recite the Sign of the
Cross without realizing and appreciating the beautiful
mystery it enunciates, and for this we ask
forgiveness. In the first reading, Moses prepares the people of Israel to enter the Promised Land. They must never fail to be thankful to God. In the second reading, Paul urges us to live in a manner worthy of our calling. Through Baptism we are one to the Body of Christ. In the
Gospel, Jesus appears to his disciples after his resurrection, commissioning them to go and make disciples of all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Published by Franciscan Media

A Word from Fr. Alex (Continued from page 3)
Romano Guardini in his book ‘Sacred Signs writes about the gestures of bowing, genuflection and
kneeling. According to him, When a man feels proud of himself, he stands erect, draws himself to his full height, throws back his head and
shoulders and says with every part of his body, I am bigger and more important than you. But when he is
humble he feels his littleness, and lowers his head and shrinks into himself. He abases himself. And the great-
er the presence in which he stands the more deeply he abases himself; the smaller he becomes in his own eyes. Bowing and genuflection make us to realize that the God is so great, we are so small, so small that beside him
we seem hardly to exist. One has no need to be told that God's presence is not the place in which to stand on
one’s dignity. To appear less presumptuous, to be as little and low as we feel, we sink to our knees and thus
sacrifice half our height; and to satisfy our hearts still further we bow down our heads, and our diminished
stature speaks to God and says, ‘Thou art the great God; I am nothing’. Guardini insists that let not the bend-
ing of our knees be a hurried gesture, an empty form: To kneel, in the soul's intention, is to bow down before God in deepest reverence. On entering a church, or in
passing before the Altar, kneel down all the way without haste or hurry, putting your heart into what you do,
and let your whole attitude say, ‘Thou art the great God’. It is an act of humility, an act of truth, and every
time you kneel it will do your soul good. Therefore, bowing and genuflecting show that we are humbling ourselves before the presence of the
almighty God in the Altar. These gestures are the signs of reverence and veneration towards the Altar which is
Christ himself.
