Call to Prayer Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do (Jn 6:5-6). When Our Lord looks at the greatness of our nation, with all our material blessings, with all our opportunities to excel, He still sees what He saw at the side of the Sea of Galilee — a lot of hungry people. In fact, He sees not only that we are a hungry people, but we are a starving people — a people who are malnourished and sick. This is not because of a lack of grocery stores, food stamps or soup kitchens; this hunger is a spiritual hunger… and it is being manifested in all kinds of demented ways. In 1982, Harvard University invited Mother Teresa of Calcutta to give the commencement ad-dress at the graduation. She shocked them by taking issue with the gracious invitation they sent to her, as “the most famous person in one of the world’s poorest nations, to address the world’s richest nation.” She said, “No, India is not a poor nation; India is a very rich nation. She has a wealth of rich-es, true spiritual riches. And America is not a rich nation. She is a poor nation, in fact, a desperately poor nation. She slaughters her own unborn children.” Blessed Teresa told us the truth. Many were scandalized at the legalization of so-called “same-sex marriage”, but what about the reality of legal-ized abortion in our nation since 1973? That was a major watershed moment where we should have realized we were poisoning ourselves as a country. We were supposed to uphold the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness above all else. A couple of weeks ago, the Center for Medical Progress released undercover videos of what can only be indicative of the kind of spiritual starvation we have reached. The video captures medi-cal doctors and leaders of Planned Parenthood (PP) speaking nonchalantly over sumptuous meals of the sale of body parts of aborted fetuses. One PP representative promised potential buyers of aborted baby parts a “less crunchy technique” to obtain intact tissue and organs, and joked about buying a sports car with the money earned from such sales. Most Americans — even many who consider themselves “pro-choice” — have been horrified by these revelations. Of course, the Obama Administration has essentially called this accusation a lie and has pledged that funding would not be cut from PP <https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/white-house-planned-parenthood-videos-selectively-edited-to-distort-the-tru>. Although this response is appalling, it shouldn’t surprise us from a presi-dent who in 2013 said, “God Bless Planned Parenthood!” Hopefully the disturbing revelations of PP’s plan to make money off its abortion industry will reawaken our nation’s awareness of this grievous abomination . Certainly, all government funding should be cut off to PP (and it never should have gone there in the first place). There are many other services out there that offer affordable women’s healthcare, and if any organization is to receive gov-ernment aid, crisis pregnancy centers should rather than abortion mills. We are spiritually starving as a nation. Recognizing the evil of abortion and PP’s history of making money off it are at least some steps to dealing with the spiritual famine present in America.

Llamada a la Oración Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Cuando Jesús levantó los ojos y vio que una gran multitud venía hacia él, le dijo a Felipe: "¿Dónde podemos comprarles suficiente comida para que coman?". Él dijo esto para ponerlo a prueba, porque él mismo sabía lo que iba a hacer (Jn 6: 5-6). Cuando Nuestro Señor mira la grandeza de nues-tra nación, con todas nuestras bendiciones materiales, con todas nuestras oportunidades para sobre-salir, Él aún ve lo que vio al lado del Mar de Galilea: una gran cantidad de personas hambrientas. De hecho, ve no solo que somos personas hambrientas, sino que nos estamos muriendo de hambre, per-sonas desnutridas y enfermas. Esto no se debe a la falta de tiendas de comestibles, estampillas de comida o comedores de beneficencia; esta hambre es un hambre espiritual ... y se manifiesta en todo tipo de formas dementes.
