Re: Eric Nelson
RJA Case Number 2016-06-027
Mr. Munn:
My office has been retained by the Aurora Public School District to review for accuracy
the resume/biography of Aurora Public School member ERIC NELSON that was
previously posted on the Aurora Public School website.
Executive Summary
Aurora Public School Board member ERIC NELSON falsified his academic history and
exaggerated his professional affiliations. Of the four college degrees he listed on his
biography/resume, none exist. He supplied altered diplomas in an effort to
substantiate three of his degrees. He also sought to represent himself in photos on
social media as an Air Force officer, although it appears he was only an enlistee in
the Air Force for several weeks.
NELSON lied about his education, his military service, and his involvement with
various businesses and organizations. NELSON, in response to public criticism and
questions in June of this year, made available a document he prepared on or about
June 15 concerning these documented misrepresentations, created new falsehoods
to attempt to cover up lies and misrepresentations, and communicated those
falsehoods in public forums.

NELSON claims to have taught as an adjunct faculty member at two Colorado
universities; this is true only in part, and it appears that the adjunct position in which
he served was most likely appointed under misrepresentation of his professional
qualifications through providing false statements on his resume concerning his
academic achievements. NELSON claims to be a contributor to forty organizations;
however this investigation has revealed that some of these organizations have no
idea who he is, or that he inflated his contributions to include a claim of a board
member position. It would appear his inflated resume and academic achievements
could have influenced his level of participation with these organizations.
Aurora Public School Board of Education Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age, a Colorado and district resident, and a US citizen. The
length of term is four years and the number of terms one can serve is two.
Records maintained with the Aurora Public Schools reflect that ERIC NELSON, a
resident of Aurora, Colorado, filed appropriate documents with Arapahoe County
Clerk and Recorder’s Office and the Aurora Public Schools to be placed on the ballot
for the November 5, 2013, coordinated election. He was elected and his term will
expire November 2017.
Photo and Resume/Biography of Eric Nelson
This information was provided by ERIC NELSON and posted on the Aurora Public School’s website.

As an educator, community leader and volunteer, Dr. NELSON's main objective will
be to act as a representative for the students of our city, ensuring they are put first.
Dr. NELSON earned a B.A. in Psychology from Southeastern University, a Master of
Social Work from Northwest Nazarene University, an MBA from Northeastern
University, and a Doctorate degree in Organizational Psychology from Southeastern
University, Washington, DC. He is also a minister and elder at the Potter's House
Church of Denver. Dr. NELSON feels anyone with a positive mental attitude that
tries hard enough and aims high will achieve success.
Education Follow-up
Educational attainment and adjunct professor position claims on the resume that he
provided to the Aurora Public School Board are false and no dates of university or
college attendance or graduation were provided by NELSON. What follows is a
summary of those findings.
B.A. in Psychology from Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, or
Lakeland, FL, or Washington DC – NOT TRUE
Although NELSON could be alluding to any of three Southeastern Universities,
two Southeastern Universities currently exist. One is known as Nova
Southeastern University, located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. No degree or dates
of attendance were found for ERIC NELSON. The registrar at Nova researched
and found that if NELSON would have attended this university, the degree would
have been a B.S. in Psychology (not a B.A.).
Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL was renamed as such in 2005; prior to
that it was named Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God in 1997. No
degree or dates of attendance were found for ERIC NELSON. Compare these
dates to the supplied diploma for the purported Master’s degree from
Northwest Nazarene University dated May 15, 1999; this Southeastern
University did not exist as named until six years after the provided Northwest
Nazarene University Master’s degree diploma.
Southeastern University, Washington DC (where Nelson claims to have obtained
his doctorate), did not find any undergraduate or graduate degrees for ERIC
Rico Munn, Superintendent Aurora Public School District July 28, 2016
Page 6
NELSON with his corresponding date of birth and Social Security number at this
institution.
Master of Social Work from Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, ID
– NOT TRUE
This institution has no record of ERIC NELSON ever attending. NELSON supplied a
photo via text message to The Aurora Sentinel and The Colorado Statesman of a
diploma that was supposed to be issued to him from this institution with a
graduation date of May 15, 1999 (see Figure 1).
On July 8, 2016, Northwest Nazarene University sent a scanned photo of a
diploma from 1999 with the recipient’s name redacted (Figure 2).
Inaccuracies exist in the diploma supplied by NELSON (Figure 1). Among them is
the misspelling of “Northwest” as “Nottwest” on the seal, and the body of the
diploma contains verbiage for Glassboro College in New Jersey, a school that
appears to be unrelated to Northwest Nazarene University which is located in
Nampa, Idaho.
Northwest Nazarene University never used special honors (such as magna cum
laude) for graduate degrees, “only for undergraduate.” Also, the Master’s in
Social Work degree did not begin until 1999, so there would not have been a
graduate that year. The degree has always been designated as Master of Social
Work, not Master of Science in Social Work (as stated on the diploma supplied by
NELSON), since its inception in 1999.
Also of issue is the name of the school itself and the dates of graduation. The
diploma supplied by NELSON has a date of graduation May 15, 1999 from
“Northwest Nazarene University” (see Figure 1). At that time the school was
named “Northwest Nazarene College” as demonstrated in a diploma from 1999
supplied by the school (see Figure 2). The date on the valid diploma is June 12,
1999. NELSON claims to have obtained a degree from Northwest Nazarene
University when the official name of the school at that time was Northwest
Nazarene College, and on a date (May 15, 1999) earlier than the actual
graduation (June 12, 1999).

According to the registrar’s office, they have no record with anyone graduating
with a degree that corresponds with NELSON’s date of birth and social security
number.
MBA from Northeastern University, Boston, MA
– NOT TRUE
According to the registrar’s office at Northeastern University, no student with
the name ERIC NELSON with his corresponding date of birth and Social Security
number ever registered or obtained a degree from their institution.
When examining the diploma (see Figure 3), the first gaffe, according to the
manager of transcripts at Northeastern University, is that the heading would say
“College of Business,” not the “College of Arts and Sciences.” “Summa cum
laude” has been added to the diploma; most institutions only use these honors
for undergraduate degrees and Northeastern University is no exception. If this
were an undergraduate diploma, the honor would have been in a different font
and in a different place on the diploma.
The manager of transcripts verified that the date of graduation was in June 2002,
not May 2002, and that their seal has always been red, never gold.
Regarding the signatures on the diploma, GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN (see Figure 3,
signature identified as “Dean”) was a former Governor of California. According to
his biography he has lived in California since 1955, and there is nothing in his
biography about serving as a Dean at Northeastern University. According to
their website, the President of Northeastern University from 1996 to 2006 was
RICHARD M. FREELAND, not WINSTON WASHINGTON (see Figure 3, signature
identified as “President”). None of the names listed as officials on the diploma
were recognized by the manager of transcripts at Northeastern University.

Doctorate degree in Organizational Psychology from Southeastern
University, Washington, DC.
– NOT TRUE
The diploma that NELSON provided shows a graduation date of May 19, 2007.
This university lost accreditation and ceased offering classes on August 31, 2009.
Graduate School USA is now the custodian of their records and their Registrar
verified that Southeastern University did not offer Doctorate Degrees (see
Figure 4, lower right corner listing degrees offered). They also did not find any
undergraduate or graduate degrees for ERIC NELSON with his corresponding
date of birth and Social Security number at this institution.
Rico Munn, Superintendent Aurora Public School District July 28, 2016
Page 10
Figure 4 Snippet of 2007 archived web page
In Figure 5, the diploma that NELSON provided, we again see the “summa cum
laude” honor associated with a higher degree when the majority of American
institutions do not add honors to degrees above bachelor’s degrees.
The seal at the bottom of the diploma in Figure 5 does not look like
Southeastern’s seal in the upper left corner of Figure 4.
The president of the university from 1996 to 2009 was CHARLENE DREW JARVIS;
the signature of the president in Figure 5 does not at all resemble this name.
Another gaffe is the title under the second signature which is the “Vice President
for Academic Addairs” [sic]. On the archived 2007 Southeastern University web
page, DR. GUGU MOCHE was the Dean of Academics & Faculty Affairs, there
was no VP of Academic Affairs, and the signature does not at all resemble the
name of DR. GUGU MOCHE.

Adjunct Professor, University of Colorado – Denver, CO
– NOT TRUE
According to the University of Colorado Denver, ERIC NELSON (his date of birth
and social security number were provided), records were not located indicating
that he was an adjunct faculty member.
Adjunct Professor, Colorado State University - Ft. Collins, CO
TRUE
According to Colorado State University payroll records, ERIC NELSON (date of
birth and Social Security number provided) was employed with the Ethnic

Their response in part: “accordingly, the Act precludes us from producing any
documents in response to your request.”
What specific records did Colorado State University rely on that allowed ERIC
NELSON to be an Adjunct Professor?

Follow-up of Claims in the NELSON Biography
Information contained in this section (in order of NELSON’s biography) of the report
resulted from interviews with personnel from each organization and independent
research.
Eleven of the forty organizations which NELSON made reference to did not contain
enough information to follow up on, and in fairness to Mr. NELSON, it would have
been inappropriate to guess at what he might have been referring to.

The Behavior Continues
NELSON’s pattern of deception continued when he interviewed for a small non-
profit that provides support to families whose lives have been impacted by sudden,
unexpected death of infant or toddler. Because of his fabricated resume, which
included his education, that he was a clinical case manager / psychotherapist /
psychologist / relief staff with Aurora Mental Health Center, and his experience as
Executive Director of the Colorado Homeless and Community Coalition Campaign,
they offered him the position. He started February 1, 2016, and later resigned
May of 2016.
No information was found concerning an organization called Colorado Homeless
and Community Coalition Campaign.
