LINCOLN CENTER FESTIVAL 2015 MISS JULIE

About August StrindbergBy the time the 39-year-old Johan AugustStrindberg completed Miss Julie in 1888,he had experienced more than enoughhardships and emotional trauma to make apoignant commentary about class and socialdynamics. Strindberg lost his mother byage 13 and later was estranged from hisfather—neither was able to support him inhis childhood beyond basic necessity, earn-ing little from their respective occupationsof servant and steamship worker. Despitehis relentlessly troubled early life, he enteredthe prestigious Uppsala University in hisnative Sweden when he was 18. Initially areligious and career-minded student ofchemistry, writing did not appear to be afixture of his future. However he quicklylost interest in his medical pursuits and, after leaving and returning to Uppsala in1870, he began to write his first plays. After completing and staging two decentlyreceived one-act works (In Rome and TheOutlaw), his first blunder came in 1872with the sound rejection of Master Olof,Strindberg’s first foray into the multi-actsaga. It took nine years to find a theaterwilling to stage it (fortunately to favorablereviews), and he filled that span constantlytweaking the plot.

Deeply discouraged by the exhausting trajec-tory of Master Olof, Strindberg had becomerather cynical, focusing a notable amount ofhis work on critiquing established theatricalinstitutions. Though his earlier works werewell-received, his more honest and scathingprojects could not succeed at the conserva-tive theaters in which he was first allowedto show his plays. A nearly transformedman by age 37, he abandoned his Lutheranfaith and, after exploring different philoso-phies, decided that he identified with thewritings of Nietzsche. Not long after, hepublished his most controversial work: a

collection of short stories entitled GettingMarried. It contained fictional anecdotes ofmarriage that promoted anything fromegalitarianism to outright misogyny—andthough the stories were fabricated, it is diffi-cult to overlook the parallels to Strindberg’slife. The very first sentence of the collectionreads: “He had just completed his thirteenthyear when his mother died.” It was apparentthat he saw himself in some of these uncom-fortable vignettes. As his marriage began todeteriorate (caused in part by the intenselynegative response to Getting Married), hestarted to work on Miss Julie. In it we seea representation of his marriage with thewealthy Siri von Essen—Miss Julie theCountess and Jean the servant formed aneerily familiar duo.

Five years after a messy divorce in whichhe lost custody of all his children, his men-tal health issues—which most likely werepresent since his college days—becameundeniably apparent in his autobiographicalnovel Inferno. With chapter titles such as“Extracts from the Diary of a DamnedSoul,” “The Fall and Paradise Lost,” and“Hell,” readers gained a more intimateinsight into Strindberg’s boiling madness.

Historians generally agree that this “infernoperiod” eventually came to an end, asStrindberg wrote three more successfulplays around the turn of the century. Heeven founded his own theater in 1907,which was meant to show only his plays.Intima Teater remained open until hisdeath in 1912. Despite this stint of suc-cess, Strindberg had spent more than halfof his life attempting to force his playsupon an audience too tame for his torturedemotions. The next generation of writersdrew more meaning from his work—storieswhich, whether for better or worse, had towait for the world to catch up with them.—Gabriel Mizrachi
