God was no stranger to Abraham. Our first reading gives us a glimpse into their relationship. Abraham’s faithfulness and closeness to the Lord made him comfortable enough to bargain back and forth with God. This conversation would never happen between strangers. In our Gospel, Jesus tells us, “ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Friendship with God happens when we persevere in prayer and keep the lines of communication open to God. Do you have a pattern of daily prayer that keeps your rela-tionship with God growing?

Rest In Peace

We ask that you remember in prayers this week

Dorothy Ann “Dot” Walsh

who has recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

D ot Walsh was our secretary here at Saint Johns for seventeen years, and

retired four years ago. She has gone home to God. "It was in 1998 that Dorothy found the perfect job match as an administrative assistant at Saint John Chrysostom Church in West Roxbury, where she was often the first point of contact in the parish center until her retirement in 2015." Her funeral was held here at Saint John’s on Tuesday, July 23rd. We thank God for the many blessings that He gave us by having Dot with us for so many years. We ask God's blessing on her husband Tom, and all the family in this difficult time for them. May she rest in peace.

Welcoming New Eucharistic Ministers In the Fall, we plan to offer both the body and blood of Christ at Mass. Additional Eucharistic Ministers are required to offer the Cup. Once cold and flu season begins we will suspend it until the Spring. Please consider this important ministry. To participate please speak to Pauline Sayers or call Mary Campion the office at 617-323-4410.

Baptisms Once you have welcomed a new child into your home it is time for that child to also be welcomed into your parish life. When you are ready to schedule a Baptism at Saint John’s for your child please call the office at 617-323-4410. All our baptisms take place within our

community at Mass. Preparation for the sacrament is done by attending a baptism prep session. This is necessary only for your first child to be baptized. Our next session is scheduled for Saturday, August 10. You will attend the 4 pm Mass and then gather with us for sacramental preparation from 5-6 pm. We welcome you. Call and make the arrangements with us.

Fr. Mark Zittle is a Carmelite Friar. He is the Director of Spiritual Retreat Ministries at Fordham University, in Bronx, New York. He will be speaking to our Parish on July 27 & 28 regarding Cross Catholic Outreach. Fr. McLaughlin spoke to us last year. He is a wonderful speaker and we look forward to hearing from him.

I n the Gospel, Jesus teaches us that God is our “Father” and just as a parent’s love for their children is unlimited, so is God’s love and care for us unlimited. In the month of July, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families in our community, providing for food, utility and rent, bills, etc. Totals for July will be provided in an upcoming bulletin. Thank You!.

“Allow me this opportunity to share with you and St. John Chrysostom Parish my heartfelt gratitude and congratulations for reaching your 2019 Catholic Appeal goal... As you may know, the Catholic Appeal provides nearly half the funding for critical ministries that serve our parishes, schools, and all those who turn to the archdiocese for assistance. Please also share my sincere thanks with your parishioners who made a commitment to supporting this year’s Appeal. Their generosity to our Church is inspiring and makes an immediate impact in both the life of your parish and the lives of those served through our Archdiocesan ministries. Asking God’s blessings upon you and your parish community, I am fraternally yours in Christ,

Fall Bible Study Our next Bible Study will begin Tuesday September 10 at 9:30 am. We will discuss the Gospel of John. . “John's Gospel tells the life story of Jesus, the incarnate Word of God. It begins with his heavenly existence and his descent into the world. It follows Jesus through his public ministry of 'signs' that lead to his passion, death, resurrection, and ultimate ascent to the 'glory' of his heavenly Father. Many of Jesus' miracles and teachings in John appear in no other Gospel and what is common to John and any of the synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) is always told in a distinctive fashion by John. John places a special emphasis on Jesus' commandment to 'Love one another as I love you' (John 15:12)”. All adults are invited to consider joining. The cost of the materials is $16. To register, contact Mary Campion [email protected] 617-323-4410 x13

Community Corner Reflection You may remember that on 9/11 Todd Beamer, 32 was on the flight that crashed in Penn. He made a call to Lisa Jefferson, a GTE-Airfone supervisor, told her about the situation, and said he didn’t think they would make it. He asked her to pray with him. They prayed the Our Father together. When he put down the phone, Lisa heard him say “Let’s roll!” as he joined others trying to foil the hijackers. The Our Father is the prayer of our lives and as we are reminded in today’s Gospel, it is the prayer that Jesus taught us. It is a transformative prayer. It changes our hearts. Consider the following reflection (author unknown) on this prayer we know so well.

I cannot say Our, if my religion has no room for others and their needs. I cannot say Father, if I do not demonstrate this relationship in my daily living. I cannot say who art in heaven, if all my interests and concerns are in things and possessions. I cannot say hallowed be thy name, if I do not live it in word and action. I cannot say thy kingdom come, if I act as though I am the center of the universe. I cannot say thy will be done, if I am unwilling or resentful of having it in my life. I cannot say on earth as it is in heaven, unless I am truly a person for others, willing to serve and help wherever it is needed. I cannot say give us this day our daily bread, without doing my part to provide for the needs of all those around me. I cannot say forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us if I continue to harbor a grudge against anyone. I cannot say lead us not into temptation, if I deliberately choose to remain in a situation where I am likely to be tempted. I cannot say deliver us from evil, if I am not prepared to back up my plea for God’s help with constant prayer.

Human beings are called to praise God for his gift of creation, not

be predators out to plunder the earth and

all it contains . - Pope Francis
