By Christy ParkerReport of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from theMonthly Meeting of Youghal Town Council held on `8th June2009. MILLENNIUM GARDEN PLAYGROUND: The complete rejuvenation of the Millennium Park Playground isnow 95% complete and will be re-opened to the public later thismonth. The works included the complete replacement of all theplay equipment with new more imaginative, and importantly morerobust equipment, and the pouring of new rubberised surfaces inthe playground. The total cost of the entire works is €84,655.11.As previously informed I have secured Rapid Grant Aid of€66,000, leaving a shortfall of €18,655.11 which requires funding.I will be endeavouring to raise these funds over the remainder ofthe year by endeavouring to minimise expenditure in certain areas, while endeavouring to maximise income from all availablesources. The new playground is being examined and certified byROSPA this week prior to opening. NEW FAILTE IRELAND SIGNAGE: The new tourist signage is starting to be rolled out this week andwill take 4 - 5 weeks to be completed in total. This will also entailthe removal of old signage and the repositioning of other signageto facilitate prominent positions for the new signage. New inter-pretative signage will be erected in all the public car parks as partof the project. Failte Ireland are grant aiding the scheme to thevalue of €35,320 plus VAT, while Youghal Town Council are pro-viding all the labour costs associated with the project. This projectwill help to maximise the tourism potential of the historic coreand enhance the visitors experience through the development of acoherent, consistent and trustworthy set of pedestrian signs whichwill ensure the experience of the visitor is pleasant, stimulatingand welcoming, enabling the tourist to explore the town with easeand comfort. CLAYCASTLE FOOTPATH: I gave a commitment to the Council that I would get directlyinvolved with Cork County Council to complete this project. BothPaul Murray and myself have worked together to obtain a solutionto the problems at this location which are now currently beingimplemented. I have paid the ESB €9,920 plus VAT (€11,259.70)to erect 7 new public lights on this stretch of footpath. The priceincludes the removal of the old existing poles and the under-grounding of the cables. Kilpatrick Civil Engineering Ltd. havebeen appointed to complete the footpath at a total cost of€16,388.60 (including VAT). The concrete footpath is now almostclose to completion with provision left to take the new lights, weare still waiting for the ESB who we anticipate will be on site in 4to 6 weeks to complete the project. Cork County Council haveagreed to pay a contribution of €10,000 to the project reducing theTown Council's overall cost to €17,647.80. This cost will be metout of the Non National Road Grant for 2009 which because of its40% reduction in now completely spent. GREEN AREA AT DR. KENNEDY PLACE:The agreed works as per the Councils approved section 183 Noticeand subsequent contracts have now been completed by the landowner at this location. Council staff will now reinstate the greenarea over the next couple of weeks. All the works when complet-ed will again enhance and improve considerably another area ofthe town as part of the Councils ongoing area enhancement pro-posals. GENERAL FINANCIAL MATTERS:As the members are aware the General Purpose Grant Allocationform the Local Government Fund to Youghal Town Council hasbeen reduced again by a further 3.22% by the Department ofEnvironment, Heritage and Local Government. This amounts to afurther cut of €38,698 for 2009 which will now result in our ownbudget expenditure cuts of a similar figure. Details of how I pro-pose to deal with these is contained later in the Agenda. I envisagecommencing the Draft 2010 Budget schedule with a number ofsub committee meetings in early September which will look at the

areas of income generation, greater efficiency measures linkedwith possible expenditure cuts, maintenance where possible ofquality services delivery, new draft parking bye laws and a num-ber of new policy proposal documents for public consultation. Ilook forward to your views and proposals, which will presentthemselves during this process. Town Foreman's Report:Town Clerk Liam Ryan explained the procedure to the new coun-cillors: each councillor in turn relates their list of concerns on mat-ters within the Town Council jurisdiction. Mr Ryan notes eachitem and issues a report on all the issues raised to members with-in two weeks. Cllr Linehan Foley said residents at Dermot Hurley Estate wereseeking a disabled parking space near no 17. She said she wasdelighted that the Greencloyne playground will shortly re-openand congratulated the Town Clerk for acquiring funding. However she was concerned that vandalism would blight the facil-ity as happened previously and wondered if a FAS worker orunemployed, or CCTV could be employed as security. Cllr Linehan Foley also asked for news of the Sarsfields Terracecar park and said the residents at Seaview have been promisedmore parking spaces. A shore in Seaview was also causing seriousflooding in an adjacent house. Cllr Liam Burke said cars parked at both exits meant vehicleswere having extreme difficulty accessing Friar Street from Porter'sLane, that grass needs cutting at the Knockaverry steps and tres-passers are entering private property from the deValera Street carpark. He sought an update on the landscaping proposals forSthruhan na Sali.Cllr Daly said residents in estates opposite Crowley's garageremain very concerned over parked vehicles obstructing theirviews when exiting, though he was advised it is a County Councilissue. He also said Oakhill needed urgent weeding etc and askedif it was in Council management yet. He was told it remained pri-vate at present. Cllr Hennessy listed several items for attention: the overgrowth atthe Jail Steps and the town walls, missing mooring rings on thequays, extra bins needed at Green Park and a total lack of greenspace play area for children at Sweetfield Estate. She asked whenwork on the rockery at the top of the Spa/Dermot Hurely estatewould commence, as a serious accident was imminent andwhether, as money for ramps is unavailable could speed signs beerected at Bayview Grove? The councillor said complaints aboutthe graveyard's opening and closing times not being displayed areongoing, with another lady locked in there recently. She said pot-holes on the Golf Links Road made it look like it had beenbombed. Cllr Michael Beecher echoed the Golf Links Road concerns andsaid it extended as far as the Holy Family church. He thanked theTown Clerk and Town Engineer Paul Murray for the new footpathto the Claycastle, but observed that the pavement outside thetourist centre and CYMS was very dangerous and the gutters insame area needed cleaning. The stump of a tree outside the touristoffice needed removing (assuming the Virgin Mary doesn't appearthere first presumably!) He advocated CCTV to address vandalismissues relevant to the playground and the New Line. He sought aremedy for a large tree hanging into Moonraker on Cork Hill. Cllr Murray said a railing at Raheen Park needed repair andrepeated concerns about the access point onto Spa Road fromDermot Hurley estate. She said the council needed to erect signageat the graveyard regarding people's responsibilities in such matteras removing their flowers etc. and also repeated the demand foropening and closing time signage. Noting that the long eveningsmeant people visiting later, she reported that a 70 year-old womanhad to climb a wall to leave the graveyard recently. She also envis-aged upcoming problems with closing times at the playground.Cllr Hennessy then expressed concern over some leisure boatsexceeding speed limits in the harbour and was told it was thatcomplaints should be er, launched with the gardai. Cllr Beecher

sought clarification as to whether high powered boats can legallybe launched from the Ferry Slip and was told to refer to the bye-laws. Cllr Murray recalled that former councillor Olly Casey wasrecently nearly catapulted into the water by a high-powered boatbeing launched for trial from the Ferry Point. She said the sailorwas a stranger and perhaps unaware of the speed limits whereaslocals are particularly observant of the rules and regulations. Mr.Ryan concluded that enforcement of bye-laws is a Garda matterand complaints made therein. However, at the behest of CllrBeecher, he would convey the council's general concerns to thestation. Cork County Council Items:Cllr Murray said she had informed the County Council of how"extremely dangerous" are the footpaths in Youghal. She had her-self experienced a fall. She said Cork County Council had paid €7m in compensationfrom such incidents throughout the county over to past few yearsand Youghal would be submitting more unless matters improved. She understood funding was in short supply but that somebodywould be seriously hurt, prioritising was needed and that the situ-ation could not simply be abandoned. The councillor said she was aware that landscaping at Sthruhan naSali was imminent but pleaded for "one run of the lawnmower" tocut the grass there meantime. She said the green area in questionwas "the most miserable effort" of an amenity she had ever seenbut the residents at least deserved to have the grass cut on it. Cllr Beecher had sign requirements on his mind. He asked that awarning sign be erected at Green Hole to indicate a steep drop. Hesuggested an information sign be erected at the bottom of CorkHill indicating directions for the town centre and the N25. He alsowanted two Fairtrade signs on the N25 and two further ones at theentrances to Youghal. The councillor also asked for informationsigns on the N25 informing motorists that Youghal car parks arefree, along with 1hr free parking from 1-2pm on the Main Street. Cllr Burke delivered a lengthy list, including a request for infor-mation on the proposed new fire station, updates on the supposedwork on the sea wall at Moll Goggin's Corner, on the concealedentrance at Summervale lawn and the unfinished road surfaces inthat area. He voiced concern over ponding at the old monasteryand added that premises on Strand Street had been strewn withpebbles by passing traffic, due to poor road surface. He conclud-ed with "the usual list of broken footpaths", i.e. Tallow Street,South Main Street (between Mall Lane and Water Lane) and thejunction of Strand Street and South Abbey. Cllr Burke asked Town Engineer Paul Murray if there was anychance of any of the footpaths being remedied this year. Mr.Murray said funding was very limited and his priority was the listof areas suffering from ponding -or flooding to you and I. Heexplained that workers are currently tending to the country roadsprogramme, with staff shortages limiting the number of workersavailable in town. Once this programme was complete he wouldbe "assessing" the various demands regarding the town's footpathsand he "guaranteed" that sections of repairs would ensue this year. Cllr Revins reported that the top of Kilcoran Park needed resurfac-ing and said the Knockaverry estate roads were in a deplorablestate. He said ponding at Nagle House was a disgrace and moresoas the youth café within had gone to a lot of trouble to paint theexterior. He said the youth café had acquired funding to establishthe facility and it was unfair they should have to endure this. CllrBeecher agreed it was of urgent priority. The Town Clerk interced-ed to say that "we could all devise a list of 100 things that needdoing but lets put it in perspective. Unless you provide me and theengineer wit the necessary funding, we can't do the work." He saidYoughal Town Council was "performing miracles" at present anddoing a lot more work than most towns in County Cork, but thingsstill had to be prioritised form 100 down to 10! Cllr Linehan Foley said a shore in the middle of the road by JD's,South Main Street, needed attention. Town Engineer Paul Murraysaid it was a loose manhole cover and a specialist needs to resolve

it. The councillor referred to Mr. Murray's previous "promises" ofa landscape plan to address the dangerous parking at the entranceto Quarryvale, on which she had congratulated him following theirvisit to the area. She further reminded him that had also accompa-nied her to see the footpaths at Dr. Kennedy's Place where he hadalso promised a solution. Nothing had happened since in eitherinstance. Mr. Murray asked if he had really made such promises."Yes, you did," replied Cllr Linehan Foley, to support from thechamber. "I'm not rushing you, I'm reminding you," she addeddiplomatically. Mr Murray referred to double yellow linesinstalled at Quarryvale and said they weren't being observed. "Areyou asking me to legislate for people disobeying?", said the engi-neer. "Yes," said the councillor "and I'm also asking you to lookafter the business (Crowley's) at the other side of the road. Wespoke of flowerbeds and a sufficient gap for people to see theroadway," she concluded. Cllr Linehan Foley expressed concerns over drinking and suchpractices at the rifle range, Claycastle. She said a person asked acounty council employee emptying bins in the area recently towarn some individuals regarding their drinking but was told it wasprivate property. The councillor felt it was a Garda issue but mean-while rubbish of all sorts was accumulating there. She felt bottlesposed a particular hazard doe to the obvious danger of brokenglass on a beach -litigation claims included. She asked that a let-ter be sent to the owners of the rifle range and preferably it be flat-tened. The Town Clerk said it was a matter for Cork CountyCouncil. (Oh dear!) Cllr Murray said one solution might be toserve a dereliction order, staring with a request to board it up. Shewould pursue it at County Council level. Mayor's Business:Mayor Sandra McLellan inadvertently sparked a debate andrethink on the provision of civic receptions when she proposedsuch recognition be afforded to former councillor and three timesmayor, Cllr Olly Casey. She said he had given lifetime's service tothe council both as an employee and councillor along with a careerin the fire service. The chamber concurred with Cllr Revin's sug-gestion that the occasion be a joint reception for Cllr Casey's wifeAnne who also served the council in a caretaking/maintenancecapacity. At this point Cllr Daly said the message from the doorsteps wasthat too much money was being wasted on civic receptions. Hemeant this in a general sense and not as a reflection on the entitle-ment of Mr. and Mrs. Casey. Indeed, the members were shortly todeclare that it was of the utmost importance that the media did notimpart the incorrect impression on the issue! Cllr Daly's advice was widely recognised in fact, although his sug-gestion that civic receptions be "knocked on the head" wasdeemed a step too far. The Town Clerk saw regulation as theanswer. He believed a civic reception should be only afforded topeople "who have contributed extraordinarily, who have gonebeyond the norm, in service to the town." He felt the thrust of acivic reception may have been lost and event diminished by a ten-dency towards proliferation. "It would be no harm to go back tobasic," he suggested. Cllr Daly said he could understand peoplelike Eddie O'Sullivan and Brendan Cooney being civically hon-oured for their achievements but that some people were "gettingcivic receptions for winning three-legged races!" Mr. Ryan suggested the council issue a letter of recognition and aframed certificate in place of many receptions. This was accepted, with Cllr Revins recalling a similar system operating 20 years ago.Cllr Beecher mooted names being nominated and culminating in ajoint award night occasion. Cllr Murray said the council chambermight not be the best forum for nominating civic reception recip-ients anyway as the press presence can inhibit councillors from notsupporting an individual's nomination. It was agreed reiterated that Cllr Casey's reception was 'kosher' soto speak but Cllr Linehan Foley suggested that other former coun-cillors of long-term service also be invited and presented with cer-tificates, "so they don't feel left out."

The Mayor paid tribute to the previous day's St. Raphael's OpenDay and said she was honoured to have opened it. She said hadreceived other invitations also, including the following Saturday'striathlon and an art exhibition in the Methodist church on July 31stto which she encouraged other councillors to attend. Cllr Burke reminded the chamber that he and Cllr Daly had attend-ed the inaugural meeting of the Youghal Transition TownInitiative. He explained briefly that it is a voluntary communityinitiative aimed at helping a town towards a low carbon emissionfuture. It promotes sustainability in issues like food, energy andtransport and Youghal joins such towns as Tralee, Carlow, Galway,Ennis, Tramore, Carlow, Bandon, Kinsale and Midleton in its ini-tiative. The local group wished to make a presentation to nextSeptember's meeting, he concluded. Nobody objected, though Mr.Ryan requested a formal request be issued. If they establish aproperly constituted group, he added, it would help them to applyfor funding at budget time. Nomination of members to Youghal Tidy Towns CommitteeCllr Michael Beecher will now join three present councillors -McLellan, Linehan Foley and Murray- on the committee. He willattend three-monthly meetings that facilitate liaisons between theTown Council and the Tidy Towns Committee. Motion by Cllr Murray seconded by Cllr Beecher, "That thisCouncil write to the Minister for Education outlining the urgentneed for more primary school places for Youghal."Cllr Murray said all three Youghal primary schools are overcrowd-ed. She said Bunscoil Mhuire have applied for planning permis-sion for a three storey extension at the rear and have collectedsome funding. Gaelscoil Chorain also has room for extension.South Abbey however, is in a critical, possibly dangerous, situa-tion, she explained, given it has no room for expansion. This is awonderful school that has been promised government assistanceto the point of having located a new site before being persistentlylet down. Cllr Murray said that on a recent visit she observed the formerbadminton balcony was now a classroom struggling to cater for 30children. "The first thing you detect is body odour because thereis no ventilation," she said. She believed the Department neededto hear it from the council, as representatives of the people howchronic the situation is. She reflected that forward planning wassorely inefficient when school building plans were being formulat-ed, even in the case of Pobalscoil na Trionoide. Her Motion wasunanimously supported. Heritage Report July 2009 by Cllr. Liam BurkeThe following is a report on activities from April 2009 to date:-1. This event was estimated by KPMG to have beenworth €480,000 to the local economy in 2008.Votes of Congratulations:Cllr Michelle Hennessy congratulated Kathleen Keniry of theKeniry Irish School of Dancing on her retirement after 50 years ofdancing tuition in Youghal. AURA HELPING YOUGHAL CHILDREN DISCOVER THE GREAT OUTDOORS THIS SUMMER

Youghal children have no excuse not to embrace the outdoors thissummer thanks to Aura Youghal Leisure Centre which is offeringchildren the opportunity to enjoy outdoor adventures with thelaunch of their ‘Fun Multi-Activity Camp’. ‘Children have been cooped up indoors all year and summer is theideal time to allow them to adventure outside and to experience allthat the outdoors has to offer. This was very much the thinkingbehind our decision to introduce outdoor nature trails and treasurehunts into our summer camp programme,” explained AuraYoughal Leisure Centre Operations Manager, Tracy Kenneally.“We know the challenges that parents face in encouraging childrento put away their Play station and iPods and to enjoy the outdoors. There is nothing like a walk on the beach and we developed a pro-gramme which gives children the opportunity to enjoy all the fea-tures that our coastline has to offer,” explained Tracy. ‘Everyone loves a trip to the beach and we are lucky enough tohave one here on our own doorstep. These camp activities andexcursions provide a great way for children to experience whatoutdoor treats are on offer on our own seashore”, added Tracy. The outdoor nature trails and treasure hunts are just two of theactivities on offer at Aura‘s ‘Fun Multi-Activity Camp’ this sum-mer. The camp also includes team building activities, outdoorsports, arts and crafts, swimming, supervised water games andface painting. A fancy dress party will take place on the last day ofeach camp. All of the outdoor camp activities are weather permit-ting.The ‘Fun Multi Activity Camp’ takes place from Monday, July27th to Friday, July 31st and from Tuesday, August 4th to Friday,August 7th. The camps take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.The July camp costs €80, while the four-day August camp costs€70. Aura members can avail of a 10% for both camps.

Aura are also reminding parents that they are taking enrolmentsfor the ‘Intensive Swim Lessons’. These classes are ideal for chil-dren who have already learned how to swim and want to build onand improve their swimming strengths. “Our ‘Intensive Swim Lessons’ are proving to be hugely popularthis summer. The numbers enrolling have exceeded all our expec-tations. We are finding that many children are finishing up oneweek of lessons and parents are then rebooking them in for anoth-er week of lessons straight away,” explained Tracy. The week long classes are open to swimmers of all levels and areongoing throughout the course for the summer until August 21st.Classes take place from 9 a.m. to 9.45 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to10.45 a.m. each day and cost €50 per week with a 10% discountfor Aura members. On Monday night Janoswas first Mike O Neill was second and Eugene O Halloran wasthird. Well done all.In loving memory of Gracie Cunningham 1919-2009Gracie Cunningham [nee Hogan] was born in December 1919 -you can imagine the hardship back then, no heating, no runningwater, and no cars yet she went on to live for 89 years.Gracie was one of five children, Johnnie, Jamie, Mary andMichael and was the last surviving member of her family. She waspredeceased by her brother Michael who died in infancy. Thedeath of her brother Jamie who died at just 21years age reallybroke Gracie's heart, as they were so close. Her sister Mary diedat the age of 48 and Johnnie died fifteen years ago. Like most of her generation in the late 30's early 40's Gracie hadto immigrate to England find work, there she spent six years work-ing there in the Royal Northern Hospital. She really loved her timethere and would often recall some wonderful stories from thoseyears spent there. Following the unexpected death of her mother,Gracie returned home to Ardsallagh to take care of her father. Onher return she met and married her beloved Paddy - they were avery enterprising couple and together with their children Tom andNell they developed a very progressive dairy herd on the familyfarm in Ballyheeney. Sadly Paddy's unexpected death in 1973 leftGracie alone to run a farm and care for two young children - sheworked extremely hard and even though she retired from farmingmany years ago she never lost interest - just days prior to her deathshe asked Kay Ledingham how many cows they were milking thisyear.A wonderful neighbour and friend, she always had time to sit andchat with people - time was never an issue she had great neigh-bours and friends - Molly, Madge Dee, Madge Curran, to name buta few, in good times and bad they shared everything and theyalways looked on the bright side of things. Her infectious laugh and captivating smile endeared her to every-one She loved a good laugh- and Clashmore was not a safe placeto be on Fools day. JULY MEETING REFLECTSPOSITIVELY ON COMMUNITY

ALERT INITIATIVEBy Christy Parker

A sizeable gathering was present again at the July meeting of theYoughal and District Community Alert meeting, according toSecretary Pa Forest. Mayor Sandra McLellan and Cllrs MichaleBeecher (Treasurer) and Cllr Michelle Hennessy attended. Themonthly meetings have been steadily growing in stature and theinteraction, between the Garda representatives and the generalpublic is much appreciated by both sides. Sergeant Paul Kenny deputised for PRO Sergeant John Sharkeyand issued a report on crime-related incidents in the town over theprevious week. These included an increase in shoplifting incidentsand criminal damage to cars in the Raheen Park area. SergeantKenny again stressed the importance of the public contacting thegardai immediately they witness an illegal incident or behaviourlikely to lead to one. The issue of 'boy racers' was again prominent and is evidently theongoing source of many complaints to the gardai. Sergeant Kennysaid a law that denies the issuing of penalty points to drivers under18 compromises prosecutions. It was also related that provingincidents of illegal decibel levels and even the level of tints onwindows is also a challenging process when it reaches court. Onthe other hand, the gardai are now tendering for the relevant mon-itoring equipment to acquire strong court evidence in future. Innational terms, given the reported determination by the gardai tomeet the challenges head on, (pardon the unfortunate pun!) thenoisy day of boy racers may be drawing towards imminent close. Quad bikes at Pilmore and Redbarn were also aired in grievance. These new nuisances are apparently frightening beach goers. Themeeting heard that they are also in breach of a bye-law and opento prosecution if causing inconvenience. Moreso, they are pow-ered vehicles and therefore require licence and insurance. Astronger garda enforcement of the law is anticipated. The meeting was told that inaugural church gate collectionsamassed €827. Chairman Mossy Lynch thanked the collectors andall who contributed. The next meeting is on Tuesday September 1st at the WalterRaleigh at 8pm.

275 TO WALK FOR CAN-CER RESEARCH

HUGE INTEREST FOR KERRY WAY CANCERRESEARCH WALK: 24TH – 26TH JULY 2009

July 2008: Nearly 300 people have registered to walk The KerryWay Cancer Research Walk, which takes place from Friday, 24thJuly to Sunday, 26th July 2009.

Friday, 24th July Moll’s Gap to Kenmare 17km9.30am start

Saturday, 25th July Lauragh to Kenmare 25km8am start

Sunday, 26th July Killarney (Torc) to Kenmare 21km9.00am start

“Cancer affects so many people, through their own journey orthrough someone they know. Taking on cancer is a daunting chal-lenge which requires focus and determination, elements which arealso needed for facing other challenges in life such as climbingMount Everest. However the greatest challenges cannot beachieved alone - it is the team supporting you that will help youget through. Just like our team for Mount Everest, the CorkCancer Research Centre provides focus and determination to thechallenge of bringing new treatments to cancer patients. I’mdelighted to be involved in this event and to lend my name andsupport as part of the fundraising efforts for cancer research, andto help combat cancer” commented Pat Falvey, who will belaunching the event at Moll’s Gap on Friday, 24th July.Whilst Kerry is renowned for having the highest mountains inIreland, the Kerry Way and Beara Way trails avoids the higherpeaks and opts for lower reaches of the mountain ridges.Impressive mountain views, dramatic peaks and glens, wild moor-lands, wooded paths and wide coastal panoramas await those whowish to walk part, or all, of the 63km walk.“The Kerry Way Cancer Research Walk is an extremely scenicwalk and this event is a great opportunity to raise funds for cancerresearch as well as to meet new people, have fun and keep fit. When we first came up with the concept for this event, I neverimagined the Walk could raise as much as €25,000 in its inauguralyear. Last year’s event was a tremendous success with over€119,000 raised for cancer research. I was completely shocked buttruly delighted with the outcome. People have been so generousto date and our goal is to raise the same level funds of this year, ifnot more.” Damian O’Brien, Walk Co-ordinator.If you would like to make a difference in the fight against cancerand contribute to the researchers vital work, donations are grate-fully received and can be lodged into The Kerry Way CancerResearch Walk account – AIB Bank, Sort Code: 93-01-21,Account No: 01302795. WATER SAFETYIrish Water Safety reminds people to take steps to ensure that theyare safe when on holidays.Parents should be alert to the fact that while on holiday abroad thesafety standards at beaches and in pools may not necessarily be thesame as in Ireland. Similarly when participating in aquatic activ-ities, be mindful of your safety and that of children. The simplerule is: if in doubt - stay out!The public should take responsibility to avoid becoming a drown-ing statistic by following some key water safety tips that will helpkeep them safe:SWIMMINGHoliday destinations often lull people into a false sense of securi-ty and people often put their lives at risk around water as a resultof complacency, ignorance of the dangers, a lack of training or acombination of all three. On arrival at a holiday centre, which has a swimming pool, do notallow children to go immediately to the pool until you havechecked out the safety arrangements. On many occasions theremay not be any lifeguard on duty. Swim only after digesting food and never after taking alcohol orimmediately after a long journey. Always swim with others, never alone. Be particularly careful of young children wandering off.Constantly supervise children/baby pools that may be next to themain pool without any barrier between them. Check for pool depth markings. There may not be any so youmust check the depths yourself if you are a competent swimmer. Ensure that you do not dive into shallow water. Watch out for sudden drops or changes in the gradient of a poolfloor. Check for missing, uneven or slippery tiles surrounding or in thepool. Do not swim or do not allow children to swim in a pool with dis-coloured water. Always swim in designated areas patrolled bylifeguards. Swim with family or friends - never alone. Swim within your depth and parallel to the shore. Never swim after dark. Beware of rip currents, as new moon spring tides are particularlyhigh mid-week.

Girls Guide to the Grads 2009

How Can I Look My Best? You will want to look your best and you can. Just follow the pam-pering programme and make-up tips provided below by TaraMurphy, Beauty Consultant and Owner of Invogue Beauty Salonand you will be ready to dazzle.Nails: Perfectly polished and painted nails scream sophisticationand glamour. If you want these nails for your debs rememberyour feet as well as your hands. On giving yourself a DIY profes-sional manicure/pedicure, start by filling the nails and applying asmall amount of cuticle cream and gently pushing the cubiclesback with an orange wood stick. Do not use metal as you coulddamage your nail. Then apply some hand cream to soften thehands. When working on your feet remember to file down the hard skinbefore applying the cream. Use nail polish remover to clean awayany oily film left on the surface of the nails. Then apply a basecoatto protect your nail, followed by 2 coats of your desired polish andadd shine to your nails. If you want to go that extra sparkle andbling why not try some nail art designs and diamonds at yourfavourite Beauty Salon.Skin: We are not all born with perfect skin but are you listeningto your skin? It is trying to tell you what it needs. If you can inter-pret it’s sensations and textures you will be able to care for it muchbetter in the future. Your skin is the canvas for your makeup; a per-fect skin will help to give a perfect make up. However if yourskin is dry, oily, congested etc there is only so much that yourmake up can do! A daily cleanse, tone and moisturize day and night with the correctproducts that suit your skin is vital. Then weekly it is important toexfoliate to rid the skin of dead cells and

excessive oils. This is oftenfollowed by a mask for 20minutes toleave your skin looking radi-ant. However if you feel thatyour skinis still not at its best, then aprofessional facial may beneeded. A visit to your favouriteBeauty Salon a few monthsbefore the Debs will allowthe skin to be perfect for thebig night especially if a fewtreatments are needed. AlsoMums often enjoy comingalong for a few treatmentsand make a day of it.False Tans: There are manyfalse tans on the market how-ever the same pre and post

care applies to them all:SCRUB - Exfoliate for up to a week before the tan but not the dayof the false tan application.SHAVE or WAX IT -The day before the tan.OUTFIT CHECK - Wear Dark clothing and loose fitting shoesthe day of the application.

MOISTURISE - after each shower to keep up the tan, but notbefore or the day of the tan application.PAT DRY - after each shower and do not rub the skinSWEATING is a big no after the tan application. Do not carry outany exercise until after your first shower after the application.Note: If you have sensitive skin do a patch test before tanning.Tanning is very important to get right for your Debs night. Youmust remember that there are different shades of false tans, so ifyou have a pale complexion it is better to use a lighter colour tan.It is always possible to add more tan if desired but not so easy totake it off. The most popular tans are the spray on tans. Air wrapsaround the tanning spray which effectively allows it to dry as youspray avoiding streaking and giving you a perfect tan in 10 min-utes. If you are unsure about tans it is advisable to do a trial a fewweeks in advance and not the week of the event. There are manydifferent shades of tan that can be applied according to yourskin tone and preference. Remember the tan application should becarried out the day before your big night and not the day of it!!Make up: Your make up application is only as good as the brush-es you use so use great brushes!! High quality brushes allow youto apply and blend better than anything else. At the minimum youneed a fluffy powder brush, a flat eye shadow brush, a taperedblush brush and an eyeliner brush.Foundation: You should try and get the nearest colour founda-tionto you own skin tone. An off colour base will make everyother cosmetic you apply just look not quite right. Mixing founda-tion and moisturiser can give a good tinted moisturiser. If youhave discolouration or spots on your skin apply concealer on theproblem areas before applying your foundation. Apply foundationwith a make up brush or sponge.Powder: Set your foundation with loose powder applied with abig fluffy brush. This sets every type of cosmetic from foundation,to eye shadow to even lipstick!! Pick a loose powder with a yel-low undertone to make sure that it works with your skin tone. Also deposit extra powder under the eyes to catch any eye makeup fallout. Then brush away.Eye Lashes: Make sure lashes are free from any make up.Curl the lashes with an eyelash curler. Then get a hand held mir-rorand hold it down and look into it. This will allow you see the rootall the way to the tips of your lashes. This gets the best length pos-

sible, Maximise lengthlook down into a mirror, got it!!Lipstick Choice: Thetype of lipstick depends onyour individual taste.Matte lipsticks last longerbut are drier in texture.Cream lipsticks give goodcoverage and contain mois-turizers. Hydrating lip-sticks are good for dry lips.Sheer lipsticks are moistand give the lips a stain.Lip glosses have the mostmoisture. It is best to apply

Douglas started very brightly scoring in the firstminute. The first half saw Youghal self destruct as they leaked 3soft goals on 5, 14 and 28 minutes to effectively end the tie as acontest. Douglas led at the break by 3-5 tom 0-4 without dominat-ing but found scores easier to come by than Youghal who lackedthe presence of a scoring forward. Youghal to their credit foughthard in the second half and managed to reduce the defecit to just5 points at one stage. Bill Cooper was superb at centre forward butagain the lack of fire power up front saw Douglas home on ascoreline of 4-12 to 1-13.Team: R. Cunningham, M. Cronin, J. Grace, C. O'Laochdha, B.Ring, B. Coleman, D. Ring, N. Roche, Brendan Ring, K. Welsh,B. Cooper, C, O'Mahony, V. Murray, L. Desmond, J. O'Mahony.Subs used: E. Coleman, B. Great work fromAndrew Curtin who was a thorn in Rovers side all evening sawVictor Cahill hit the back of the net and this was followed by asuperb goal by James O'Mahony who ran straight through thedefence and drove the ball past the Rovers Keeper. Connectionswere pleased with the result but know there is improvement need-ed to have a chance of securing the Championship. Next up isCloyne on Thursday evening in Ahavine.Team: D. Ryan, L. The physical presence of Aaran Hoganat full forward was the key to victory and he chipped in with twoGoals and was involved in setting up a lot of others. MatthewFarrell had a fine game at wing back as did the entire back linewith Mark Flaherty dominant throughout. Up front Cian Daly washaving a great game at centre forward and in the second halfTomas Coleman had a superb half hour scoring 1-4 and terrorisingthe defence with his running at them at every oportunity. Ronan

O'Sullivan scored 3 points from centre back the best of which wasa pointed free from the 45. Youghal travelled to Mallow on Saturday 11th July. On a desper-ately wet morning for sport, the Youghal lads took on a strongMallow squad in both hurling and football. Football first: with the wind at their backs Mallow started bright-ly and took a two goal lead. Youghal fought back with JakeCooper getting on top in the half back line and Tyler Lewis con-testing every ball in midfield. A goal from Peter Kirk gave the ladshope before half time followed by a great run and goal by JakeCooper. After the break, Mallow inched ahead but another goalfrom Peter Kirk set up a frantic finish but Mallow just held on towin the match. The second game saw the tiring Youghal lads face a secondMallow squad in hurling. With a panel of 45 players under 9's,Mallow had the advantage of introducing fresh players. However, the Youghal lads never dropped their heads even though they wererun off their feet in the first half by the fresh Mallow players eagerto impress their coaches. However, to their great credit, the sec-ond half saw Youghal grit their teeth and contest every ball andproduced a very strong display. Best for Youghal were RuaidhríMcSweeney in goal and Kyle Brown in defence. The Mallow club were so impressed with the conduct of theYoughal squad that they invited them to their annual under 9indoor blitz next Christmas.

This was hid first All Irelands and he has done verywell in a short space of time.Long Jump - B/14 Daniel Smiddy got into the top eight and fin-ished in 7th place with his jump of 4.70m. There was very little inthe difference between the silver medalist and Daniel's position.Daniel had a back injury which prevented him from jumping to hisfull potential on the day but was delighted to be in the top eight atthis level.Long Jump - G/18 Nikita Savage finished in 9th position.Javelin -B/13 Adam Curley competed in the B/13 Javelin and fin-ished in 13th position with his throw of 16.28m. The standard wasextremely high with the top 8 throwers exceeding 20 metres.Javelin - G/13 We had two girls competing in this age groupHeather Curley and Lauren O' Mahoney. Heather came 4th(19.44m) and Lauren came 7th (17.62m). It was a great achieve-ment for both girls to get to the top eight in their first All Irelands!Javelin - G/16 Patricia Curtin came third in this event achieving aPB in competition with her throw of 32.10m. She has showntremendous improvement in recent weeks.Track Events 600m - G/12Jennifer Hennessy competed in the G/12 600m having come 2ndin the Munsters. They had to run in lanes for 100m two per lanebecause of very wet conditions. Jennifer ran a brilliant race in avery fast time of 1.49.49 which was a big improvement on her timein the Munsters. She finished in 4th place in a very fast and com-petitive field. She was so unlucky not to be in the medals!600m - B/12 Fearghal Curtin competed in this event having wonthe Munsters. Fearghal went into an early lead straight after com-ing out of the lanes which probably cost him in the last few metresof the race when Tadhg Brennan of Ferrybank literally caughtFearghal in the last stride winning by a fraction of a second.Nevertheless Fearghal won his first All Ireland silver Track andField medal! 800m - B/14 Ross Donovan had to run in a heat and did very wellto qualify for the final; there was a quality field and he was delight-ed to get to the final. Ross ran a very strategic race and kept intouch with the main field enabling him to finish in a really good6th position in a time of 2.24.63. This was also an outstandingachievement for this lad in his first All Irelands!80m - G/12 Rachel Dunne competed in the heat and narrowlymissed out on qualification for the final by one place. Rachel hasdone very well this year winning a Munster bronze sprint medal!80m - B/14 Cian Greene won his heat in a time of 10.34. Therewere lots of breaks in the starts of the final and Cian got off to abad start. He was again pipped on the line missing out on thebronze medal. Cian came 2nd in the 200m heat on the 20th but hadto withdraw from the final as he injured his ankle.300m - G/18 Nikita Savage ran well in her heat and finished in 7thplace in the final in a time of 45.32.We are taking a break from training for a few weeks ands will berecommencing mid August for the Cross-Country season and alsofor any athletes who are interested in taking part in the MunsterBs Track and Field in Ennis on the 3oth August next. Well done toall our athletes who did so well on qualifying to compete in the AllIrelands many of whom came through large fields to get to thislevel. Obviously well done to all those who assisted in thecaoching and to a great bunch of parents for bringing their kids totraining and for travellin to Tullamore. No doubt we will be hear-ing more of these athletes in the near future!

Two one act pieces forBru na Si, Youghal on the11th and 12th of August.

The first is the well known and much loved ‘First Confession’ byCork man, the late Frank O’ Connor .First Confession will berecited by Cork actor Mark O Shaughnessy. Mark has been a reg-ular on the Cork stage for over 25 years and he recently complet-ed his second run of the hit musical ‘Michael Collins’ in The CorkOpera House and The Olympia Theatre Dublin. The second piece is the Irish Premiere of ‘Still Life’, written byDanusia Iwaszko and performed by well known Youghal per-former Ruth Hayes. The story is an intimate portrayal of awoman’s journey through the breakup of her marriage to findingher independence and discovering who she truly is. Standingalone, on stage, she talks to the audience in a manner that willhave you believing that you are the only one there! Her mysteri-ous circumstances render her completely immobile! An ambigu-ous ending is sure to have the audience pondering about what hasbecome of her fate. Has she died? Has she been reborn? Is she astatue? These are some of the possible outcomes which audienceshave delighted in pondering after successful performances aroundthe world. This one act performance will take the audiencethrough the emotional and sensory journey through the eyes of awoman with who many can relate.“Still Life” was the winner of London’s One Person Play Festivaland has been staged in London, Edinburgh and Sydney. It wasinspired by seeing a statue on Brixton mainline station of a womanholding a shopping bag. It was also staged with its companionpiece “Perpetual Motion” (about a modern day Sisyphus) at theEtcetera Theatre Camden. This not to be missed production of Stilllife and First Confession will be staged in Bru na Si, Youghal.Tickets are €8 and will be available on the door and box office tobe announced shortly. Refreshment will be served at the interval.

INCH ROVERS LADIES FOOTBALL

On Sunday evening Inch Rovers began the defence of theirCounty title against a much fancied and new look Liscarrol side inMourneabbey. Playing against a strong breeze the openingexchanges made it look as if this game was going to go to the wire.Mary O'Connor and Amy O'Shea opened our account with a goaland a point before Liscarrol replied with the same. As the openinghalf wore on, Inch settled and found their range and the scorescame a little easier. The score at half time stood at 2-11 to 1-5 inInch's favour. That was mainly due to a very tight defensive unitwho worked tirelessly to repel any Liscarrol attack. With the winnow at our backs it seemed to be all one way traffic which saw usnotch up some great individual scores and prove that we are strongcontenders for this years championship. We are not out again untilthe first weekend of August although we have a senior league finalto fulfil in between against Donoughmore. Well done to all con-cerned.Fixtures - Our second junior team will be in championship actionon Thursday night against Macroom in Macroom at 8pm.

Colin will start as one of the favourites in what willbe his final game as an intermediate as he joins the senior ranksafter the tournament. Having done well at the tough Tralee coursein 2008 where he reached the semi finals of the munster juniorsmatchplay Colin will be hoping to get in amongst the leaders head-ing into the final 18 and after being drawn to play alongside localplayer Martin Hobbert Colin will be able to keep a close eye onone of the main contenders. On Sunday the seniors will take centre stage with Anthony O’Loughlin taking his place among the best players in the country.Anthony will play alongside 2003 champion and Irish internation-al William Buckley jnr of Erry in what is a terrific draw. You can keep track of the lads progress over the weekend on thePPUI website at “ppui.ie” and for the behind the scenes info go to“pitchandputtforum.com”. 17th Anniversary21st July

Danny TwohigRemember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold

me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.

Remember me when no more day by day

You tell me of our future that you planned:

Only remember me, you understand. It will be late to counsel

then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while

and afterwards remember, do not grieve. For if the darkness and

corruption leave, A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,

Better by far you should forget and smile

Than that you should remember and be sad

Love always your grandchildren Noel, Danni, Matthew,Sean, Morgan, Sophie & Leon. Wish we knew you.

THANKSGIVINGMIRACLE PRAYERDear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have askedfor many favours, this time I ask for a specialone, (mention here). Take it Dear Heart ofJesus and place it within your own BrokenHeart, where your father sees it. Then, in hismerciful eyes it will become your favour, notmine Amen.Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publica-tion, prayer and favour will be granted no mat-ter how impossible. Never known to fail.

Death is nothing at all I have only slipped into the next room.

I am I, and you are you; Whatever we were to each other, we are still.

Call me by my old familiar name; Speak to me in the easy way you always used.

Put no difference into your tone; Wear no air of solemnity or sorrow;

Laugh as we always laughed. at the little jokes we enjoyed together;

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be

ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect;

Without the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it every meant.

It is the same as it ever was. There is absolutely unbroken continuity.

What is this death but negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because

I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you,

For an interval, somewhere, very near just around the corner. All is well.

Your loving wife Bree

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there,

I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain,

I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush,

I am in the graceful rush of beautiful birds in circling flight.

I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom,

I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing,

I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there - I do not die.

Love always Alison, Kim, Ross, Christopher, Stephen,

Gillian & Daniel. Miss you more each day

who died 23rd July 2007

No words can say, how I feel today, Or feel in my heart

since you went away, I hide my tears, when I speak your name,

But the pain in my heart remains the same.

I miss you when I need a friend, Always on you I could depend,

I speak your name with tears unseen, Wishing your absence was

only a dream. I miss you from the house, I miss you from the chair,

And it’s worse on special occasions, When I know you won’t be there.

No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye,

You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why

TOWN CLERK ORCHES-TRATES €38,00 SAVINGS BUT

WARNS OF HARD TIMESAHEAD

By Christy Parker Youghal Town Council's July meeting sanctioned proposed sav-ings by Town Clerk Liam Ryan of €38,689 through amendmentsto the 2009 Budget. The savings were necessary to meet theDepartment of Environment, Heritage and Local Government's3.22% cut in funding to local authorities. Further Exchequer cut-backs to be addressed in the coming months involve un-quantifiedfunding reductions in lieu of charges on private second homes anddeductions through the Pension Levy. The Town Clerk acquired the necessary €38,689 through the fol-lowing expenditure cuts:i) Non-payment of the €12,000 Harbour Board Grant fee, while

retaining €5,000 for day-to-day expenditure. As the Council is now itself the Harbour Authority, the grant is unnecessary. Saving: €7,000

ii)Inducing Cork County Council to fund 10% of the litter warden's wages in return for transferring 10% of his duty to County areas, such as the New Line, etc. Saving: €2,689

iii) No further purchase of litterbins. Saving: €2,000

iv) Renegotiation of council phone package. (The council operates landline, ISDN lines and mobile phones, apparently). Saving: €3,000

v)Deletion of provision for future motor fleet replacement. Saving: €4,000

vi)Reduction in quantity of civic receptions. Saving: €3,000

vii) Deletion of provision for lawn mower replacement: Saving: €5,000

viii) Energy savings across spectrum of service provision. Saving €2,000

Total saving on expenditure: €28,689. Additionally, increase in incomes were as follows: i) New valuations on new businesses, with immediate effect.

Increased income: €3,000ii) Increase in number of council rented properties form 319 to

322. Increased income: €7,000 Total Increased Income: €10,000 + Expenditure Savings = €38,689

Mr Ryan said the upcoming un-quantified funding reductions inlieu of charges on private second homes amounted to an uncertainand unsatisfactory situation. Basically he said, the Exchequer willreduce its funding by an unknown amount next autumn, whileimposing on local council's to recoup the money through taxes onsecond homes. He said not knowing the extent of the reduction isbad enough but the government has not given instruction on decid-ing how many second homes are in the jurisdiction, who ownsthem, or how to collect the money! In respect of the Pension Levy,he cautiously expected the result would be cost neutral. Mr. Ryan warned the councillors that the Council had presentlycoped despite staff reductions from 20 to 15 and was voted 3rdcleanest town nationally by IBAL. He said the revenue budgetremained at €4m but warned that the capital budget had fallenfrom €6m to €1.5m. He said, "Keeping the town clean and main-taining 322 council houses with reduced resources is very, verydifficult but we are managing." He then issued a stark warning thatwhile some areas of service are already suffering, far worse can beexpected with the autumn cutbacks. "We are down to the bonenow and I'm letting you all know in advance that it is likely to getvery difficult," he concluded.

With six rounds of the League played, the position at the top of thetable is very tight. Team 3 is on 14 1/2 points while teams 5 and10 share the top spot on 16 points. The teams in numerical orderare as follows :- team 3 ; Sheila Kenneally, Maureen Broderickand Michael Bevan.Team 5 ; Jan Goodwin, Emily Fitzgerald and Eileen Long. Team10 ; Carol Mullally, Lily Bulmanand Celia O'Sullivan. This should ensure a battle royal over thenext three rounds.A very good attendance saw some excellent bowling for the week-ly prize. With one point to spare over their nearest rivals, the win-ners were Ann Galvin and Jack Donoghue. Well done, Ann ; youwere paired with one of the best bowlers in the club but for abeginner, you certainly played your part. Bowling continues nextweek at Arus, at 2:15pm.

YOUGHAL INDOOR BOWLING

Youghal Camogie Club is goingfrom strength to strength.

We had a very late start to the season with training not startinguntil late February and we had a couple of hic ups with not havinga trainer. But Mark Burke came on board for us in March andtraining has been going very well for the girls with 3 nights a weeksolidly since March. The league started very well with a great win against Blarney andwe thought there were better things to come, unfortunately wewere hampered with injuries with 2 of our pivotal players – EdelO’Connell & Alice Barry been forced out of the season due toinjury. The league concluded on the 7th July with our final game againstBallinascarthy with the score line 1-6 to 1-4 to Ballinscarthy,Youghal were very unlucky with a few harsh decisions. The veryyoung Youghal team put up a great fight and showed that they aredetermined to make this year a good one for the Club. The game started with a great free from Kelma McCarthy, fromthe 45 to Sarah Flavin who knocked it in to score a wonderful goalform just outside the square. A couple of scores from Ballinascartyand a few frees were awarded to put the game level but ShannonJoyce was available for Youghal to get 2 very nice points fromplay. There was excellent performances from Sarah Coughlan ingoal and Michaela Dalton wing back who prove that age is just anumber as they are still playing Under 14. Roisin O’Keeffe in theforwards must also get a mention for an excellent performancelaying off some great passes to result in scores. Woman of the match goes to Robyn Healy who kept great compo-sure on the ball in the back line and her performance defiantly hin-dered any of the Ballinascarty forwards from scoring. Our minors played Castlelyons on Sunday 12th July on a very badnight. They went to Castlelyons with no ilusions that they weregoing to have an easy game, but the girls came out on top with ascore of 3-1 to 1-4. Ciara O Shoichru was on form in full forward when a great ballwas lobed in from Shannen Joyce where Ciara doubled on it toscore a cracking goal she followed shortly with another great goal, scores also came from Roisin O’Keefe and a lovely point wasscored by Shannen Joyce. Their back line also played with greatpersistance. It was a great game for all. This will give our young girls a great boost going intoChampionship with the Junior team on Wednesday 15th July –they are away to St. Vincents and throw in is at 7.30 pm

Sunday 5th July first round of the Intermediate competetion sawFr.O'Neill's meet Tracton at Mayfield . From the opening puck ofthe ball Tracton took command and followed through with theirfirst point . A free was then given to Fr.O'Neill's which NicolaNagle put over the bar . Within minutes Tracton were awarded afree which was lobed into the box which the goalie Linda Hayesdefended bravely but Tracton found the back of the net . Play con-tinued intensely with Fr.O'Neill's (Kate Harrington) taking a freewhich passed to Francis Wiggins but went wide. Fifteen minutesinto the match at this stage and the rain came to dampen the con-ditions but it was temporary .The next piece of action came whenKate Harrington passed the ball to Caroline Phelan in turn to NoraAherne who in turn passed it to Liz Sweetnam and into the net. Afine goal from good field work from O'Neill's . The teams werelevel again .What happened next was the turning point to thismatch . Within minutes of each other saw Fr.O'Neill's penalised fortwo fouls from which the frees were taken and lobed beautifullyinto the box and two goals were easily picked up by Tracton . Aminute later Kate Harrington recieve a point from a free .Twentyminutes into the match and Tracton got another goal and twopoints to Fr.O'Neill's one point from a free taken by Nicola Nagle. Just before half time whistle a great ball landed to Nora Ahernewhich resulted into a 65 , this then taken by Kate Harringtonwhich just went wide . Half time score : Tracton 4-4... Fr.O'Neill's 1-3.Similiar quick start to second half saw Tracton send the ball intothe square and into back of the net but luckily for O'Neill's it wasa square ball . Free out and the pressure was on and O'Neill's hadanother wide . But 4 mins into the second half saw Ciara McGrathfouled which Kate Harrington took and placed over the bar .Similarly a foul on Liz Sweetnam saw Nicola Nagle take a finepoint for O'Neill's . Within minutes Francis Wiggins placed a fineball over the bar . O'Neill's looked a stronger force this secondhalf with Tracton getting a 65 which was placed wide which wasfollowed by the only yellow card being issued in the match .Thefinal ten minutes saw Tracton get o-1 from a free and one widewhile O'Neill's saw great play from Kate Harrington, CiaraMcGrath and two heartbreaking goal chances taken by NoraAherne which went narrowly wide. The final whistle blew withO'Neill's scoring 0-4 to Tracton 0-1 in the second half . FINAL SCORE : Tracton 4-5 Fr. O'Neill's 1-7 . After Glow

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.

I’d like to leave an after flow of smiles when life is done.

I’d like to leave an echo, whispering softly down the ways.

Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.

Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

Holy Mass will be offered for all your intentions

Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Pio please pray for her

15th AnniversaryMargaret Esther

RocheLate of 74, Sarsfield Terrace, Youghal

who died on the 16th July 1994.

O Most Holy Virgin, do not in the midst of your greatness forgetour earthly sorrows. Cast down your tender look upon those whosuffer, who struggle against difficulties, and who cease not wet-ting their lips in the bitter draughts of this life. Have pity Ibeseech you on those, who although united in love, and havebeen cruelly parted, and take pity on the lonely-hearted. Grant usyour help in our unbelief, and have compassion on those mostdear to us. Be compassionate upon those who mourn, who pray, who tremble, and grant all Hope and Peace. (Abbé Perreyve)

A group of students from the Youthreach Training Centre took partin the Copping On programme during the past academic year.Copping On is the National Crime Awareness Initiative, estab-lished in 1996, developed out of a model of good practice byYouthreach and the Garda National Juvenile Office. This pro-gramme arose out of a clearly identified need to respond in a com-prehensive, holistic way to the issue of offending behaviouramongst young people. Its focus is the implementation of a nation-al crime awareness programme with young people at risk, and thedevelopment and support of local multi-agency responses to theissue of youth offending. This programme was facilitated by Ms Nicola Lucey of YoughalYouth Project and culminated with a visit to a Prison. This visittook place in March when 8 students and 2 staff members traveledto Limerick Prison. The prison visit proved to be one of the mostvaluable aspects of the programme, as it gave the students first-hand knowledge of what life is like "inside". As part of the wholeCopping On programme students usually meet with a prisonerwho will speak to them about the realities of prison life. The stu-dents met with a young male prisoner who spoke very frankly andhonestly with them about his own personal circumstances and whyhe had ended up in prison. On their return to Youthreach the students evaluated the visit andrecorded their findings in the form of a colourful wall hanging onwhich each student outlined their feelings on leaving the prison. This art-work was displayed in the Copping On Spring 2009Newsletter.
