Entrance Hymn Come let us bow down to Christ, As we worship Him, the Son of God. Save us, O Son of God, Who did rise from the dead, We sing to You: Alleluia.

Resurrectional Apolytikion (Plagal Tone Two)

The angelic powers appeared at Your tomb, The soldiers guarding it became as dead men. and Mary stood at Your grave seeking, Seeking Your most pure Body. But You made hell a captive; You were untouched by its might. You came to the Virgin and granted life. O Lord, Who arose from the dead, Glory to You.

Apolytikion for the Hieromartyr Becoming a partner with the Apostles in way of life And successor to their thrones, O God-inspired Saint, In the active life you found an entrance to contemplation. Hence you rightly expounded the word of truth, And you shed your blood in struggling for the faith, O Hieromartyr Phocas. Intercede with Christ our God, Beseeching Him to save our souls.

Church Hymn (Troparion of Pentecost) Blessed are You O Christ our God Who has shown the fishermen as wise men By sending down Your Holy Spirit upon them And through them, the whole world You drew into Your net O Lover of mankind, glory to You. Evlogitos i Hriste O Theos imon, O Pansofous tous aliis anadixas, Katapempsas aftis to Pnevma to agion, Ke thi afton tin ikoumenin saginefsas Filanthrope doxa Si.

EPISTLE READING: St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 15:1-7 BRETHREN, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of your Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

GOSPEL READING: The Gospel According to St. Matthew 9:27-35

At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons." And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Welcome Committee

Practice hospitality ungrudgingly to one another. I Peter 4:9

As the adage goes, “You only have one chance to make a first impression.” Do you have the gift of putting others, especially visitors, at ease? If so, be thankful, as this is a gift of God to be used for His glory. And Holy Trinity needs your gifts. By joining others on the Welcoming Committee, you can help ensure that visitors who come for Divine Liturgy on a Sunday will be met by a cheerful and welcoming person. You will serve approximately one Sunday every three months. If interested, please contact Sandy in the Parish Office ([email protected]) or (317) 733-3033. Training will be provided.

Class on St Porphyrios’s Writings

A five week course on the writings of St. Porphyrios titled "Christ is Everything" will continue on Tuesdays, July 25 - August 15, at 10:30 - 11:30 am. This interesting course will cover a portion of the new book which is yet to be published, in which the Saint presents useful and profound guidance on how to love God and our fellow man. Everyone is welcomed and no previous preparation is required. All material will be provided. For further information, please call Mike Young at (317) 370-9765.

Recently a parishioner forwarded an article from the website iBelieve.com, titled “7 Things

that Will Keep Me from Coming Back to Your Church”. It is summarized in order to make

it relevant to our Church family.

1. Refuse to see me. By this, the author means, don’t ignore a visitor. They are pretty easy to

spot. We should acknowledge them and try to assist them, since they may not be familiar with

the Orthodox Divine Liturgy and our practices.

2. Don’t offer me a smile. Similar to number one. We should remember this is God’s House

and everyone should feel especially welcomed by God’s love here. A simple smile can go a

long way to conveying that to a visitor, as well as to everyone else.

3. Neglect offering me help. It’s easy when we know the Divine Services and practices and to

forget that not every visitor does. If a visitor is sitting near you, show them where we are in the

Divine Liturgy by giving them one of the Liturgy books opened to the right page. Also, in a

low voice, explain things or offer to answer any questions that they may have during or after

the Liturgy. Assistance especially during Communion and dismissal is helpful. Since non-

Orthodox Christians cannot receive Holy Communion, they are certainly encouraged to receive

the antidoron, the bread that the priest gives the faithful at the end, and to meet the priest.

4. Abstain from introducing yourself to me. Sometimes we think the business of getting to

know newcomers belongs to the Welcoming Committee, even though Father Bill has made it

clear that it is the responsibility of all of us to make everyone feel welcome, in Holy Trinity.

5. Forget that I’m a person who wants to be known, just like you. Most people don’t mind

being asked simple questions like “are you a visitor, or are you from the Indianapolis area” this

might be a good way to let the visitor know they are welcome. Joining them for a cup of

coffee after Church during Coffee Hour is also a nice gesture. People come to Church for

many reasons. I think one reason is to gain the comfort of a feeling of belonging, not just to

God but the Church community.

6. Ignore my boundaries. This one the author admits contradicts most of the first 5 points.

But I think that if you smile, introduce yourself, try to be helpful, try to start a conversation,

and realize that the person is not receptive, the only thing you can do is respect their wish and

not intrude. Since we never know what tribulations others may be suffering, we should not

judge or be offended. So just smile and go on your way. Maybe say a short prayer for the

person is all that you can, or should do.

7. Forget my name. Remembering a name can be difficult. Maybe jot it down on paper or in

our smartphone. If the person returns, then we can greet them by name.

Holy Communion Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Saint John of Kronstadt (1829 – 1908) says, “in partaking of the Holy Sacrament, be as sure that you partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, as you are sure that every moment you breathe air.”

Saint Cyril of Jerusalem (about 313 – 386) also teaches us “Since Christ Himself has declared the bread to be His Body, who can have any further doubt? Since He Himself has said quite categorically, ‘This is My Blood,’ who would dare to question it, and say that it is not His Blood? Therefore, it is with complete assurance that we receive the bread and wine as the Body and Blood of Christ. His Body is given to us under the symbol of bread, and His Blood is given to us under the symbol of wine, in order to make us by receiving them one body and blood with Him. Having His Body and Blood in our members, we become bearers of Christ and sharers, as Saint Peter says, of the divine nature… Do not then regard the Eucharistic elements as ordinary bread and wine: they are in fact the Body and Blood of

the Lord, as He Himself has declared. Whatever your senses tell you, be strong in faith.” The Lord urges us to make a sincere effort to make peace with each other when anger or hurt exists, seeking forgiveness or granting forgiveness, as appropriate, (Matthew 5:24) before approaching the Lord. Receiving Holy Communion is certainly important to our spiritual life and growth. This ultimate connection with Jesus Christ is a gift which God gives to us and one which should be accepted gratefully and responsibly. Our Church teaches that receiving Holy Communion frequently is encouraged. Our Church also teaches that a preparation is expected. Preparation for Holy Communion can vary from person to person. The minimum preparation to receive Holy Communion is to fast from meat on Wednesday and Friday and not eat anything on the morning prior to receiving Holy Communion. For those who must take medication that requires food, they are permitted to eat that which is necessary for their health. Furthermore, the Church teaches us to fast on particular days during the year and especially during the four main fast periods. These four main fast periods are in preparation of holy days of the year, as follows:

December 13 - 24 (Nativity of our Lord) Great Lent (before Holy Week and Easter) Monday after All Saints’ Day through June 28 (the Apostles) August 1 - 14 (the Dormition of the Theotokos)

Each of us is encouraged to approach the Chalice to receive Holy Communion in love and in peace, gratefully and responsibly.
