16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:30-34 Quesons to Ponder: 1. Have you ever been so busy with work, family, home chores and other obligaons that you wanted to run away? Where is your place of rest that takes you away for me alone - your “happy place”? 2. In this gospel account Jesus points out to the apostles and to us, the need for rest. Why do you think this lesson made it into the gospel? Do you ever seek a me to be alone with Jesus? 3. “His heart was moved with pity for them..” What things move your heart and push you to do something to relieve the pain of others?

Prayer LapPrayer LapPrayer LapPrayer Lap Conquer your first hour and conquer your whole day! A
mo3o I’ve heard that is surely branded deep in the hearts of
every morning person. For those of us who cross the finish line
before breakfast, it’s praccally a ba3le cry. I’m that guy who
is typically staring at the clock before it goes off. When it does
I’m a man on a mission. I have the whole day yet to conquer.
Prayer has long been an important part of my day and life.
Admi3edly though, it wasn’t central to my morning roune. I
hit the gym or the road every morning-no excuses. I’ll strap on
some gloves, pick up some weights or put on the running
shoes and get in a morning workout every day. A while back
my roune changed though. I’d been thrown a curve ball and I
had to adjust.
Two years ago I had a medical mystery I didn’t want. My
doctor had looked at what seemed like everything and had
absolutely no clue what was going on. When you’re pulling at
threads for months and things aren’t ge:ng be3er, it can
seem like your days are numbered. I was grounded and pu3er-
ing through my mornings. The mystery was eang me up in-
side. Eventually the doctor said there was really no reason I
couldn’t run, so I resumed my roune and hit the road the
next morning. Maybe I didn’t have an answer to my condion,
but I had my roune back. I plugged in my headphones and
strapped on the shoes for the first me in quite a while. It’s
5am – showme!
It. Felt. Great! It was terrific to get back in my groove.
Exercise can certainly be meditave, but I pray mostly at night.
It can be easy to let prayer get automac or roune - I’ll pray
with my kids before they eat, pray with them at night before
bed, and while I walk the dog.
On this parcular morning, I was just ge:ng to the good
part of the run. With a pounding heart and record pace I tuned
out the music blasng in my ears and every other thought in
my head and prayed. With my own mortality in mind, I prayed
as if my life depended on it. I didn’t pray for my life or for the
answers I so desperately wanted. I spontaneously started to
pray to our Lord so I could see and accept His will in my life. I
didn’t slow down. I didn’t stop running. I just prayed and
talked to Jesus…all the way to the finish line.
This was quite honestly one of the most intense moments
in my life. I started a conversaon that day that hasn’t
stopped. Every morning now I stretch, get down some coffee,
and start my roune. At a parcular point in every workout I
have a certain spot in the road, or me on the clock that I call
the “prayer lap”. With a pounding heart I talk to Jesus. With a
focused mind I head for the rest of the day and listen.
Conquer your first hour and conquer your whole day? I do
believe that, but would like to add one thing. Put Jesus out in
front and go aBer Him with everything. Without doing that,
you’re not really conquering anything.

Go Beyond Sunday: Stewardship of our Talents Spiritual Gis Course St. Pope John XXIII once said, “I believe that when we get to heaven God will ask us only one queson: ‘How did you use the gi#s I gave you?’’’ If Pope John XXIII is correct, then it is probably a good idea to figure out what those spiritual gi#s are! The St. John Paul II Stewardship Commission is sponsoring an 8-hour Spiritual Gi#s Course that will help parishioners discover their spiritual gi#s and then also help each of us find ministries that match our spiritual gi#s. The Spiritual Gis course will be offered on four consecuve Thursday nights: August 23, 30, September 6, 13. Sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude at 8:45 p.m. All sessions will be held on the St. Joe Hill Campus in the Mark room of the parish meeng center (the old school building). Yvonne Stutesman & Kae Thompson are the instructors. Because the Stewardship Commission believes so strongly in this program, there is no charge for the Spir-itual Gi#s course; we will have a free-will offering at some point in the program. Mark your calendars now and com-plete your registraon form located in the back of both chapels. Babysing will be available all nights.
