2003 Nissan Altima“I love the interior space, the sound system and that it’s paid for!”

BERLIN: This car is going to bug MINI.

Few would argue there is no more iconic shape in the automotive world than that of the Volkswagen Beetle.

It was the original Beetle upon which the corporation was built and it was the second, New Beetle in 1998 that turned things around once again during a period when Volkswagen had started to drift.

Since then we have seen exciting products such as the new Passat, Tiguan, Touareg and the luscious looking CC, but it was the New Beetle that started people looking at Volkswagen again.

In fact VW today has one of the youngest fleet of vehicles on the road, the eldest being two years old. When the third generation Beetle arrives in Canadian showrooms in October, that span is going to be lowered to 18 months.

While it could be argued VW doesn’t really need the new, New Beetle, nothing could be further from the truth.

To many, Volkswagen without a Beetle just wouldn’t be Volkswagen.

As Ford found out when it tried to resurrect the Thunderbird, iconic cars must not simply look similar but the “spirit” of the car has to be there, too.

So in bringing about the 2012 Beetle two major issues had to be addressed - the look and the image.

While the new car is longer, wider and not as tall as the outgoing model, it is much more passenger friendly on the inside, especially in the back seat.

In the outgoing 2010 Beetle, the design focused on one large semi-circle for the cabin and a smaller semi-circle on each end for the wheels.

It has been replaced by a half oval for the engine and drive and a larger, elongated half oval for people and luggage.

The outgoing car made the driver feel like he/she was sitting in the centre of the car. And then there was the back seat that was torture for the big and tall,

especially in terms of headroom. During the press preview in Berlin, I

made a point of riding in the back seat. Getting in was no problem but getting out was another matter, requiring me to bend things I haven’t bent in years.

But, the big thing was I could sit straight up with room for my hand between the roof liner and my head.

Realtor Gray Rothnie, with Century 21 Queenswood Realty, appreciates the value and room his 2003 Nissan Altima offers.

Describing the car as “sensible, reliable, kinda sporty and fun, I love the interior space, the sound system, and that it’s paid for!” Rothnie says.

“I have owned it since new and I’m in the market for a new car but can’t find an easy replacement for the Altima’s value, space and features.”

and cargo space is pretty good at 426 litres. That doubles to 850 litres when the 50:50 split/fold back seat is down. It is way better than the 2010 model with its large, fixed rear window and trunk lid that was really not much more than an access panel.

The other issue is about the last Beetle being a “chick car.”When the second-gen Beetle went on sale in 1998, people from

all age groups flocked to buy it. Those buyers largely ignored other alternatives. They wanted a Beetle – period.

But slowly the demographic shifted to females, not helped by the little vase on the dashboard used to hold a gaudy flower.

At the press briefing, the “chick car” question was addressed almost immediately. In the press literature the word “masculine” was used repeatedly while photos showed men when it came to talking about target markets.

Volkswagen therefore isn’t so much looking at age or gender but more a mindset not unlike the broad range of buyers attracted to the MINI Cooper because the car says something about the owner.

And not surprising is the fact MINI Cooper is seen as the Beetle’s one and only competitor. Every model is priced under its direct MINI Cooper or Cooper S opposite.

Volkswagen believes the Beetle will sell through a combination of performance, price and the known and trusted build quality of Volkswagen.

And when it comes to performance, the 2012 Beetle has it with a choice of a 2.5-litre inline five-cylinder (170 hp, 177 lb/ft) on the base Comfortline and mid-level Highline or a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder (200 hp, 207 lb/ft) on the Sportline. There will be a diesel in 2012 badged as a 2013 model.

Transmission choices on the first two are a standard five-speed manual or optional Tiptronic six-speed automatic and a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic on the Sportline with paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Fuel numbers were not available for the manuals but the six-speed automatic is listed at 9.5/7.1L/100 km city/highway and 9.9/6.5L/100 km city/highway for the dual clutch.

Tested here is a European version that is close to but not identical to the Sportline we will get.

With three on board, it was more than quick off the line. My usual co-driver got a chirp from the tires because of the torque, something I didn’t think we could do anymore what with all the gizmos like traction control and electronic stability control which is standard across the 2012 Beetle lineup.

As we drove through the former East Zone, it felt rock solid and very responsive to steering inputs. Frankly, I wouldn’t have expected anything less from a VW.

There was a blind spot to the rear but nothing like that of the last generation.

One little touch I loved was the rubber hand-assist strap on the B pillar to help backseat passengers get in and out. It was a delightfully faithful replica of the one used for decades in the original Beetle. VW didn’t have to do it, but I’m sure glad they did.

As noted we will get three models with starting prices beginning with the Comfortline at $21,975; Highline, $24,225; and Sportline at $29,025.

As sort of a worldwide vanguard there will be a limited edition Premium and Premium + priced at $24,475 and $27,975 respectively. There will only be 600 of these launch models for all of Canada and they will come with a number of select goodies from the VW parts bin.

For the three main models, there are several optional packages such as a panoramic sunroof. VW is also the first to partner with legendary guitar maker Fender which is supplying a 400-watt sound system with a choice of red, yellow or blue lighting on the speaker surrounds that is selected by a switch on the dash.

There’s no doubt VW has the pricing right on this one, and with the people packaging issue addressed, the only problem VW Canada now faces is probably trying to get enough to meet demand.

While instantly recognizable as a Beetle, the 2012 model does away with the three half semi-circle design for a half oval for the engine and drive and a larger and longer half oval for passengers and cargo.

Sharing the road with large trucks and busesBy Kate Wells

In past columns, we have touched on sharing the road with large trucks, covering their large blind spots, passing, giving them room to stop and more.

However, there are other large vehicles on the road that we drive with every day. These include transit buses, school buses, fire trucks, ambulances and more.

I get a lot of emails regarding transit buses and driver frustration with a transit bus operator just “pulling into traffic” without warning. Did you know it’s actually the law to yield to a transit bus that is displaying a “yield-to-bus”

sign? If you are driving 60 km/h or lower, you must stop and allow the bus to move out from the curb lane or bus stop. The sign looks like this:

To be prepared, any transit bus that you see pulled over to the side of the road should be recognized. Stopped buses can block your vision as a driver as well as hide pedestrians that may want to cross the road. If there is space, change lanes to allow the bus to pull safely into traffic. Bus drivers really appreciate calm and patient drivers!

School buses are about to become more visible as we get into “back to school” for September.

Here are the rules for school buses: • If you see a school bus with alternating

flashing lights at the top, you MUST stop. Buses may or may not have a sign that will swing out as well. Traffic coming from behind the bus and in front of the bus must stop.

• You may cautiously drive past the bus once the bus starts moving OR the driver signals that it is safe for you to drive by. This is only once the lights have stopped flashing and the sign is pulled in.

• Remember to always watch for children when you see a school bus. School is back in session on Sept. 6th, 2011 for most schools.

Aston Martin has announced only a small number of the new V12 Zagato will be built.

Metroland MediaCarguide Magazine

Aston Martin has confirmed a strictly limited number of the new V12 Zagato will be produced.

Based on the acclaimed V12 Vantage and sporting a beautifully handcrafted

aluminum and carbon fibre body, orders are now being taken on a strictly first- come, first-served basis and production is expected to commence during summer 2012 at Aston Martin’s global headquarters at Gaydon, Warwickshire.

Designed for the focused driver, the V12 Zagato has been honed with pure

driving enjoyment in mind. The V12 Zagato combines Aston

Martin’s most dynamic bonded aluminum platform with the power of the 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 hp

and 420 lb/ft of torque. The strictly limited Aston Martin

V12 Zagato is priced at £330,000 (exc. local taxes) with first deliveries expected from the second half of 2012.

The legendary BMW Art Car Collection can now be seen in a video tour on the Internet.

For the first time, an extensive virtual overview of the origin, history and development of the collection is available online.

In addition to extensive photos, a film has been devoted to every single one of the 17 “works of art on wheels,” each of which was designed by an internationally well-known artist. Historic racing footage and artists’ statements as well as renowned representatives from art and culture are to be seen.

Since 1975, renowned artists from around the world have made their contribution to the series with the creation of contemporary vehicles.

In 2010, BMW celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Art Car series. For this occasion, the internationally acclaimed artist Jeff Koons created the 17th vehicle of the collection.

All BMW Art Cars will be showcased until Sept. 25 within the first comprehensive overall exhibition at the BMW Museum in Munich to demonstrate a chapter of exciting automobile, design and art history.

The works of art are racing and production saloons, coupés and roadsters and are all contemporary witnesses of a mobile lifestyle.

The exhibition covers everything from Pop Art of the ‘70s,” right down to new 21st century concepts.

A total of 17 male and female artists from all five continents have contributed towards the special diversity and aesthetics of the collection, artists such as Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, A.R. Penck, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer and Olafur Eliasson.

Blind and visually impaired prove good drivers at Ford’s test track

A group of 30 blind and visually impaired people recently gathered at Ford’s test track last week in Germany to experience something many of them may have thought was beyond their reach – they drove cars.

With the guidance of professional instructors, the group took on the high-speed straight-aways and corners at the Ford Development Centre in Merkenich, Cologne. The fastest driver reached 120 km/h (74 mph).

The high-speed driving may have been the highlight, but there was a serious aim to the day – helping the blind and visually impaired gain a greater understanding of vehicles and traffic in a way that can help them in their daily lives.

A team of 53 Ford employee volunteers helped organize the event, one of several Ford has held for blind and visually impaired drivers in recent years.

The group was able to run their hands over variety of vehicles, getting a feel for the shapes and dimensions.

Instructors were impressed at the speed with which the participants took to the controls – in many cases significantly faster than sighted student drivers.

In fact, with new technology developing rapidly – including camera- and radar-based safety systems, advanced satellite navigation systems and vehicle-to-vehicle communications – the possibility that the blind and visually impaired could one drive is increasing.

Blind and visually impaired participants in the special event were given the rare opportunity to drive with guidance from experts at the Ford Development Centre.

No one likes having to read an owner’s manual from front to back before setting up a new gadget. Enter the new Jabra DRIVE in-car speakerphone for folks

on-the-go. According to the company, simply tear open package and get connected – no installation required.

Easy-to-use, stylish and intuitive, the Jabra DRIVE connects to two mobile devices at a time and requires no setup, allowing drivers and passengers to stay in touch with family and friends while on the road and in compliance with hands-free driving laws.

From running errands and carpooling to commuting to work and taking family road trips, the Jabra DRIVE transmits phone conversations with crystal clarity, manufacturers say. The Jabra DRIVE also features A2DP technology, which allows

users to stream music from a smartphone or Bluetooth-enabled Mp3 player, listen to directions from GPS applications and more. Whether it’s a phone call, the latest hit song or travel directions, DRIVE transmits clear audio with ease.

The Jabra DRIVE also features a voice guidance system, long-life battery, large control buttons for volume and on/off operations, and announces battery status and Bluetooth® connectivity.

The Jabra DRIVE will be available in late July at Amazon.com or Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores and online at BestBuy.com/Mobile. For more information, visit www.jabra.com

Stay connected with both hands on the wheel

To mark the summer roadtrip season, Go RVing Canada has launched its 2011 Take Your Best RV Shot photo contest. All RV enthusiasts are encouraged to submit their best RV-related camping photos online until Aug. 29 for a chance to win one of five prizes, including a grand prize of a $750 gift card to Henry’s, Canada’s Digital Camera Centre, plus four chances to win a $200 President’s Choice gift card. Contestants can submit photos in four categories: Fun-filled discoveries and activities; family portraits; memorable sunsets; and breathtaking nature.

At the TrackDrivers put on show during wet weekend

Wet weather put a damper on events at Western Speedway last Friday night, but thanks to the efforts of Speedway staff, the Cast Iron Nationals got under way Saturday.

Staff drove around the track until the pavement dried out, but the delay meant there was no time to run time trials. Still, the Dwarf Cars, Wilroc Lite Sprint Cars and WILROC Winged Sprint Cars entertained nonetheless. Joining the local Island cars were some from the Mainland and the U.S.

Winning the Dwarf Car Class Trophy Dashes were Bob Greenaway and Dave Emmerson, also the winner of the Second Heat

Race. The first Heat Race went to Sean Sanger, who also won the 20-lap Main Event, followed by James Dore, Donnie Bonansky, Scott Drake and Bob Pridge.

In the Wilroc Lites Sprint Car Class, the B Trophy Dash went to Jeff Bird while Wayde Heckford took the checkered flag in the A Trophy Dash.

First Heat Race honours went to Robbie Haslam while Jeff Bird took the second Heat Race, with Heckford second.

Deter Lejeune, third in the heat race, won the 20-lap Main event, with Ryan Wade, Jesse Dardengo, Steven Dardengo and Haslam rounding out the top five.

Completing the night were the WILROC Winged Sprint Cars. Jeff Montgomery crossed the line first in the B Trophy Dash, followed by Scott Aumen, winner of the second Heat Race. Guy Barrett, third in the B Dash, would win the first Heat Race.

Matt Mansell, winner of the A Trophy Dash and a second-place finisher in the first Heat Race, would go on the cross the line first in the 35-lap Main Event, followed by Darren Yates, Aumen, Barrett and Jeff Montgomery.

Coming up this weekend at Western Speedway is a demo line-up featuring cars, trucks, Bombers, Mini Figure 8s and more.

The Edmonton Indy is back this weekend – good news for several Island drivers.

Montreal promoter The Octane Group has taken over the reins for putting on the race over the next three years and three lower Vancouver Island race car drivers couldn’t be any happier.

Once again, Nanaimo’s Wouter Bouman, North Saanich’s Dave Cormier and Saanich’s Bill Okell will compete in Sunday’s Eurasia Cup Invitational Sports Car Race, just hours before the IZOD Indy Car series race, the Edmonton Indy.

One element all three local drivers agree upon: they left far too much on the table over the last two years, and that has to change.

Wouter Bouman was heading for a race win two years ago here when he was disqualified from the event for doing celebratory donuts after winning the qualifying race. In 2010 – and again while leading – he flat spotted a tire and lost his brakes in his Mazda RX-8, and had to drop out.

Dave Cormier was ahead of last year’s GTP-2 race field when his shifter broke in his V.I. Fitness Centre Porsche Cup car, which also left him on the sidelines.

Bill Okell, who won here in Class GTP-4 in

2008 driving an MGB Roadster, broke a right side axle in 2009, and then broke a left side axle in 2010, running in second place in the class race.

This year’s 45-minute feature sports car race will be run on a new 2.2-mile, 13-turn layout, again at the Edmonton Municipal Airport on the north runway area.

Overall, the local drivers’ racing results have been promising. For 2010, Cormier went to the Sports Car Club of America’s National Championship in Road America and finished third in the GT-2 championship race. This year, he has been focusing his efforts, driving a 2008 Porsche Cup car on the semi-professional racing series, the Pirelli Cup, and leads the points standings after eight of 10 races. Okell has been focusing on the Sports Car Club of America’s Nasport series where he won the Nasport Lite title in 2010 and leads this year’s championship after two wins at Monterey, California’s Laguna Seca Mazda Raceway.

Bouman has spent most of the last eight months rebuilding his Mazda after a heavy crash while leading the Children’s Charity Race at River’s Edge Raceway Park.

Local racers vie for Edmonton’s checkered flag

Bill Okell

After rain cancelled last Friday’s racing, the action resumed Saturday. This weekend, the demo classes take to the track.

“Having an old car like this, and doing so well against Mazdas and Acuras...” fans are often surprised at the car that’s underneath the sharp red and blue paint job.

This weekend’s Invitational will be the third year for Bouman and his 1993 Mazda RX-7 running in the GT-1 division and the second for Okell in GT-4.

Like Okell’s MG, Bouman’s RX-7 is a familiar friend, his since 1997. Moving up to seventh from a last-place start in his first outing, Bouman placed third last year. Going into this year’s race, “anything less than a win would be a disappointment,” he says.

While not quite three decades, Bauman has been racing for more than 15 years. “It started in 1991 with an argument with my dad,” he says, recalling his claims of driving skill. “He said, ‘If you’re that good, take it to the track.’ I said, ‘Maybe I will.’”

Today, he believes his preparation for the big race in hot, dry Edmonton will serve him well. While his car offers superior horsepower, “as a driver, it’s physical fitness. I’ve been working out for three months in preparation for this race.”

Their experience on this track and others also falls in their favour. “It’s the wisdom of the track, knowing what to

expect,” Okell says. With the main Indy race following

at 4 p.m., expected to attract a crowd of 70,000, Okell and Bauman may well be racing in front of some 50,000 people.

In addition, the GT racers will be in the same area as the NASCAR racers, meaning added exposure, both to fans and to experts. “If you do something special, some people might notice,” Bauman says.

For Okell, though, one of the biggest incentives may well be the goal of having his wife alongside him in victory square, a moment missed after last year’s win.

“That would be so rewarding,” Okell says. “That would be a prime motivator for me.

Crediting the hard work also of supporters Ian Mackie and Dale Taylor, “so much of this is family and friends.”
