Welcome to the first edition of THE BRIDGE! In honor of our District Governor’s theme,
BE THE BRIDGE OF HOPE FOR
YOUTH AND HUNGER, the name of our
newsletter this Lion’s year is THE
BRIDGE. Please be sure to get any
information that you wish to be in the
newsletter to Jennifer Clapp
([email protected]) by the 10th of
every month. HOPE YOU ENJOY!
Hello District 31-O!
It’s a brand-new Lions year and I am excited to serve as District Governor along with 1st Vice District Governor Lacy Petty, Acting 2nd District Governor Susan O’Brien, District Cabinet Secretary Bob Gwyn, and District Treasurer PDG Laraine Dupree. So, what can you, the Lions of District 31-O, expect from your District Team?
Our commitment to: Serve every club
Be available to answer questions and serve as a resource
Serve alongside you in service projects and fundraisers
Encourage and motivate every club and Lion
Be your biggest cheerleader!
And what would we like from the clubs and Lions of our District? We want to hear from you on:
Club service projects and fundraiser with articles and pictures
Training you might like to have during the year
Speakers from outside our District you might like to hear from – think state and nationwide!
Whatever we can do to help with service and growth!
And how can we communicate this year?
Through our newsletter! Look for a new format for our next news-letter that will highlight and celebrate YOU the Lions of our Dis-trict! Plan to send articles, pictures, and all good news to:
Lion Jennifer Clapp at [email protected]
Through our District Website! We would like to encourage all Li-ons to use this as your “go to” place to find out what’s going on in the District such as information, upcoming dates, resources, and idea sharing among clubs.

Through your Global Team! PID Harvey Whitley, Global Leadership Team Chair, PDG Susie Dailey, Global Membership Chair and PCC Diane Whitley, Global Service Team Chair. These Lions are ready and willing to serve our District as we continue the momentum on service, growth, and leadership!
Through your District Cabinet! We are here to serve and support you this year and can’t wait to see what this year brings!
So – as we move forward from an incredibly unique past year let’s follow the theme of our International President, Douglas X. Alexander……. SERVICE FROM THE HEART!
Serving you from my heart District Governor Barbara Thompson

It was a real joy for me to serve as your District Governor last year. I stand amazed at your resilience, persistence, and “can do” attitude which was displayed through a challenging year. You found new ways to serve, new ways to fund raise and new ways to meet. You kept in touch with your members and helped retain them as Lions. You participated in training ses-sions in order to be better prepared. I am looking forward to July 17th for a reunion-our first “live” District meeting since March 2020 and an opportunity to recognize many of you for your service to Lions during the past year.
If you do not already know this, we finished this year with posi-tive membership growth-something that has never happened since the creation of District 31-O. There are a lot of people to thank for this happening. There is PCC Gary Greene and the Ab-erdeen Club which spearheaded the formation of the new North Moore Lions Club with 27 members. There is the Greens-boro Club which agreed to form a branch club for employees of the Industries of the Blind in Greensboro and which currently has 21 members. There is DG Barbara Thompson who, in addi-tion to all her other responsibilities, was our North American Membership Initiative (NAMI) Champion who fostered and en-couraged growth and retention. There is PDG Susie Daily who served as District Membership Chair and who visited lots of clubs encouraging membership growth. Finally, there is each of YOU who sponsored a new member this year. You could have had lots of excuses as to why you could not invite someone into your club but you refused to succumb to those excuses. Thank you!
You raised over $123,000 for Brighter Visions exceeding our goal of $120,000. Considering the obstacles and excuses you could have made, this is a tremendous accomplishment. Thank you to each club that made or exceeded their club goal. Thanks to each individual who personally donated over their club con-tribution. Thanks to Paul Silverman and Dale Dupree who head-ed up Brighter Visions this year and who encouraged our clubs to give even when it was difficult.
Perhaps most importantly you found ways to serve. Several clubs had 30 or more service projects during the course of the year. Our communities are better because you were there. You found a way. Thank you.
As we kick off the next Lions year, the District is in good hands. Your new District Governor is rearing to go, is well-trained and has a great vision for the coming year. When she asks for your help, say “Yes”. Encourage her, support her and let’s make 2021-22 a great post pandemic comeback year!

WEST STANLEY LIONS CLUB
WSLC President, David Almond, presenting a Melvin Jones
Fellowship Award to Lion Deanna Freeman at the June 10th
meeting.
Deanna has been a very active and dedicated Lion since Sep-
tember 2006.
She has been very engaged with the WSLC activities with our
local schools, flag program, coordinating our meeting meals,
Christmas Parade and the Mobile Screening Unit. A valuable
member deserving of this recognition!
At Waxhaw Lions’ June 3rd club meeting, Dis-trict Governor Paul Marth presented a special award to the family of Horace Byrum in honor of his induction into the NC Lions Hall of Fame. Horace was a long-time officer of the Waxhaw Club and, together with his cousin, John Byrum, coordinated the club's Charlotte Area Blind Golf Program for many years. Horace and his wife Linda raised money to sponsor the program and recruited volunteers to assist VIPs (visually im-paired persons) with their transportation and golf practice sessions. In addition, he led the club’s annual Christmas tree fundraiser and was always ready to put his skills to good use by helping anyone in need of yard work or house-hold repairs.

Horace served one term in the U S Army at For Lemonwood in Missouri. In addition to Lions, he was an active member of the Harrison Method-ist Church and the Lower Providence Commu-nity Association.
Receiving the award on his behalf were Horace's son Frank and daughter Lisa.
