Message from Pastor Tim Dear Ascension Friends,

I am in an in-between time of leaving a beloved church and moving to be pastor of a new church. This makes for both grief and anticipation, sorrow and joy. I know Ascension well, but I don’t know the people of Immanuel, the new church. Well, I do

know a few people already at the new church; Mary and my God-daughter and husband, who visited us in Columbus before they had children. And interestingly, I was present at the first service of Immanuel when it opened in 1968. My father was on the mission board and we made the 4 hour drive to Canberra to be present at the opening of this new mission start. I was 10. On the outskirts of Canberra is a Lutheran retreat center called Warrambui. I was a youth leader at the first camps held on the site, and part of fundraising and building the center. I always enjoyed going to Canberra in my youth. The National Capital of Australia had the Parliament House to see, the War Memorial museum, many embassies, and a beautiful lake. In 1900 Australia became a federation of states, a new country, with Melbourne as the temporary capital. Neither Melbourne nor Sydney could see the other becoming the permanent capital city, so they decided on land in the bush, really a large sheep station or ranch, now 3 hours drive from Sydney, and 6 hours from Melbourne, and they established a separate territory within the state of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory. Two Americans, a couple, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin won the design prize for the new capital, though only Walter is more publicly remembered. Building started in the 20’s and up until the 60’s Canberra was really a country town. It has grown a lot in more recent decades to have a population of 420,000. Google Canberra and look at pictures. It really is set in bushland and small mountains. And last summer was surrounded by wildfires that almost burned into a couple of suburbs, but thankfully heavy rain came. Canberra’s residents spent much of January indoors because of smoke, then had a serious hail storm, and then the quarantining of the Covid pandemic. Immanuel is one of 5 Lutheran churches in the city. It is close to the mini-city center of Woden, with a lot of offices and a large shopping mall. The congregation makes quite a lot of income from renting out parking spaces during the week. We will live in a church provided house near the church. It will make for a very short commute. Presuming that Mary gets work at the main city hospital, she will have a 6 minute drive or 10 minute bike ride to work. The closest embassy is of Iran, then Vietnam, and about 80 others in nearby suburbs. The Australian Parliament House is about 4 miles away. Pre-Covid, Immanuel had a worship attendance of 110 divided between a more traditional service at 9am and a more contemporary at 10:30 a.m. Notice that there isn’t a lot of time between the services, but a briefer meeting up for a cup of tea. Immanuel has older members and quite a number of younger urban professionals with children. It sometimes has some diplomatic staff as members. The membership is mainly white, with a few people of Asian background. It is a church of a lot of transitioning people. For the last few years, Immanuel has been visioning and planning a church planting project to begin a new congregation out of the existing one. A full-time church planter is on staff, partly paid by the national church. He is doing most of the same training as a pastor would do. Presently he does a lot of congregational work, and there is also a part time interim retired pastor. Immanuel is strongly in favor of the ordination of women, in a denomination where there have been 3 votes that have almost made it to two/thirds. I have about 5 years left until retirement, and will be able to work on for some more years if the congregation and I agree that would be a blessing. We are moving to Australia especially for family reasons. Caleb and Liz live in Melbourne which is 6 hours drive from Canberra or a shorter plane flight. Joel and Zeb are also likely to be living in Melbourne. Micah and his partner Niks live in Adelaide which is 13 hours drive or a plane flight.

Ascension is opening its church doors for worship!! Guidelines for Worship Services Post Coronavirus Shutdown

1. Take your temperature prior to leaving for church. If your temperature is 100 degrees or more, please stay home.

2. If you are comfortable walking, park in the south lot so others, who may be physically challenged, can use the east lot.

3. In consideration of others in our church family wear a mask. If you need one, we will have some available.

4. Hand sanitizer will be available at marked locations in the church. 5. Everyone will enter through the east entrance, between the church office and Acton Hall. 6. Follow the signs through the Assembly Room to the rear sanctuary entrance. 7. Fill the pews from front to back using the pews that are not taped off, to maintain social

distancing. Ushers can help with this. 8. Groups that have observed the "Stay at home" order together may sit together. 9. Music, singing, will be explained at the start of the service. 10. A collection plate will be at the back of the sanctuary but will not be passed during the service. 11. There will not be communion. 12. At the end of the service, please exit by pew from back to front of the sanctuary, through the

same door entered, starting with the pews closest to the exit. 13. Follow the same route you used to enter for exiting the building.

There will be no nursery so children will sit with their family. We ask that only one person at a time use the restroom unless you require assistance or are

accompanying a child. If there is someone you would like to greet, please wait until you are outside, away from the door,

and maintain appropriate distancing. If you are not comfortable with or unable to return to church at this time, the service will be

available, at least partially, on line.

The plan is to all be together for Christmas in Canberra. (Hopefully the state borders will have opened up by then, and everyone can travel.) My father and 2 brothers and their families live about 3 hours drive away, so I plan to visit my dad every month. Mary and I also have family in Queensland to the north. At this point of time, up until August 9th, my focus is very much on Ascension, on good and wholesome farewelling, on our worship life in person and videoed, on continuing to make Onecall messages, on handing over my present tasks, on cleaning up my office. Today I am talking with my coach about setting priorities for these next weeks, which I know will go by very quickly. In the busyness I also want to savor this time. Let me know what questions you have. In the love of Jesus, comfort. Pastor Tim.

1. How has the Covid-19 pandemic, including the closing of the church for three months, impacted Ascension’s

financial status?

a. The closing of businesses across the country caused the national laundromat that had contracted

to purchase the Haimerl Center for $650,000 to back out of the deal. The contract was still in the

due diligence phase, so the buyer’s escrow funds were returned.

b. Haimerl Center expenses for costs involving the lot survey and split, legal fees, building repair

costs, and utilities accumulated to more than $65,000.

c. These costs, together with spending for organ work and normal monthly church operating costs,

significantly reduced the church’s available cash.

d. Because Ascension’s projected 2020 Budget deficit of $45,000 was to be funded from the Haimerl

Center sale proceeds, a prompt review of the church’s financial capacity and future cash needs was

necessary.

2. What actions has Ascension’s leadership team taken to address the Covid-19 situation?

a. Since late February, Ascension’s Executive Committee (Orin Sheumaker, President; Joel Kratzer,

Vice President/Secretary; Steven Boring, Treasurer; Bev Cook-Finley, Finance Chairperson and

Pastor Tim Muller) has met weekly to manage the church’s Covid-19 related operational issues and

other business matters.

b. In April, a Financial Review Team was established to review the church’s financial position, liquidity

options, and opportunities for additional revenue and expense savings. This team, composed of

Executive Committee members and Chad Loomis, also met weekly to evaluate worship and

financial matters and make recommendations to the Executive team.

3. What were the biggest financial related concerns back in early to mid-March?

a. Our most immediate concern was one of liquidity, having enough cash in the checking account to

meet Ascension’s weekly payroll and billing obligations.

b. Second, we wanted to avoid selling stock holdings during a period when stock market values had

dropped over 20%.

c. Finally, we felt it important to provide our realtor with ample time (9 to 12 months) to re-market

the Haimerl Center building and property.

4. What actions did the Committee take to address these concerns:

a. Four six-month interest-free loans totaling $20,000 were secured from church members. These

loans will be repaid from the Haimerl Center sale proceeds or Endowment Fund assets in

September.

b. Following a significant recovery in the stock market by late May, action was taken to sell church

owned Worthington Industries stock valued at about $8,000 and reinvest the proceeds in a liquid

interest-bearing money market account.

c. Efforts to update signature authorities for the Endowment Fund investment accounts were

initiated in case additional liquidity is required to support church operations.

d. The 2020 Budget figures were reviewed to estimate the pandemic’s impact on church revenue and

to assess viable operational adjustments that could reduce spending in the short run.

e. Members were asked via a couple of one-call communications to send in weekly contributions via

the mail or electronic options. Our members responded generously as contributions through

May 31st exceeded last year’s by over $8,000. THANK YOU!

5. So, what are Ascension’s financial operating results to-date?

a. As of May 31st, the church recorded total income of $128,733, while expenses totaled $141,954.

This resulted in an operational cash flow shortfall of $13,221. The good news is that it’s better that

the budgeted shortfall of $18,750 through five months.

b. While member giving is higher than last year, this increase was offset by a reduction in revenue

from outside groups, investment interest, and undesignated gifts.

c. At this stage, the deficit for 2020 is projected to be between $35,000 and $40,000.

6. How will the Pastor’s announced departure impact the church’s financial status?

a. Because we anticipate employing a part-time pastor during the transition, pastoral costs should

decline over the subsequent six to twelve months.

b. In the long-term, pastoral costs will be affected by the tenure and experience of the next Pastor.

7. Why is the proposed Haimerl Center sale to Go Ye Outreach Ministries important, how will it impact the

church’s financial position, and how might the funds be utilized?

a. The sale of the Haimerl Center will make assets available which are critical to Ascension’s financial

stability and provide capacity to achieve its goals and objectives.

b. A local church ministry will be a good neighbor and likely align closely with Ascension’s mission.

c. The net proceeds available from the proposed sale for $625,000 will be reduced by:

i. Building defect mediation price adjustments

ii. Haimerl expenses already incurred to-date

iii. Additional legal fees and closing costs

iv. Realtor commission at 6%

v. Partial mortgage paydown

vi. Member loan repayments

d. If approved by the congregation, the Haimerl Center sale is subject to the following buyer

contingencies:

i. Buyer’s acceptance of the environmental and property inspection results within 14 days

ii. The buyer’s ability to secure acceptable financing within 30 days

e. While further discussion is required, other uses of the net proceeds may include:

i. Funding the anticipated operating deficits for 2020 and 2021

ii. Funding a part-time staff position to support the S.M.A.R.T goals for 2020

iii. Investments in interest and principal growth generating assets

8. What will happen if the proposed sale of the Haimerl Center does not occur?

a. Our realtor, Bob Monahan will be advised to continue marketing the property.

b. As available cash becomes exhausted, the church will need to utilize Endowment Fund assets to

fund ongoing church operations.

9. Where can Ascension members direct church finance or other business-related questions?

a. Please send your questions to [email protected] or call the church office.

b. Questions will be directed to the Executive Committee for discussion and a response.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TEAM

An invisible intruder altered our lives. No amount of security could

keep this invisible intruder out of our church.

As we move into July...with hopes that the invisible intruder’s impact

has loosened its grip and following the advice of Church Council, a

priority is recruiting volunteers to serve on the Safety team. We need

people who are willing to be responsible for locking/unlocking the

church, monitoring entrance to the church through the East entrance

after the lock down starts, be available and knowledgeable if a concern about safety is

raised. It is recommended that these volunteers are familiar with the concepts: Avoid

-Deny-Defend. A four hour class is offered by the Columbus Police Department, at no

charge to non-profit groups. In addition, the video is available on You Tube. A

possibility (based on availability of instructor) is to have a class at the church. The

goal is to have a volunteer group of at least 12 people, serving on a monthly rotation,

who are willing to accept the responsibilities.

Contact Vicki Swartz if you are interested in working with the team, volunteers are needed.

LUTHERAN SOCIAL SERVICES FOOD PANTRY Champion Ave. Food Pantry is continuing to provide food and supplies for the needy in Columbus. We members of Ascension are not able to volunteer in person each month during the pandemic as all our volunteers are at risk (ages 65 and above). A volunteer at the Pantry contracted the virus and a quarantine was conducted to stop the spread of the virus. As a result, the Food Pantry changed its operation. Now the clients stay outside to receive food and volunteers have temperatures taken, wear protective

equipment and the Pantry is disinfected regularly. There are still other ways we can help this ministry. LSS is not encouraging direct food donations to be brought to the Food Pantry. However, monetary donations are greatly appreciated. These donations can be made at the website: www.lssnetworkofhope.org Or, checks can be sent to Lutheran Social Services, 500 West Wilson Bridge Road, Suite 245, Worthington, OH 43085. Also, if anyone knows about a resource to help get the following critical items, please let LSS know: masks, gowns, gloves etc. and especially hand sanitizer.
