6 Ways to Help a Dog Thatrsquos
Afraid of Fireworks
By Liz Donovan
Jul 02 2018
A fear of fireworks is common among
dogs In fact more canine compan-
ions get lost during the Fourth of July
holiday than any other time of year due
in part to local firework displays and pet owners getting distracted at family gather-
ings among other things But there are ways to help your pup overcome his fear
Here are some tips from experts at the AKC GoodDog Helpline
1 Know what your dog loves Yoursquoll need to select a treat he finds desirable
enough that the emotional response it elicits is stronger than his fear
2 Observe your dog and learn his body language so that you can tell when
hersquos becoming stressed This is an important one To successfully recondition a
dogrsquos emotional response he needs to be in a state of mind where he can respond to
you Call your dog when hersquos first showing signs of stress
3 After the fireworks end quickly cheer ldquoTreatsrdquo while you give your dog
some The goal is for the scary sound to become a predictor of something great in-
stead of something fearful
4 Consider getting a digital recording of fireworks This will help you start the de-
sensitization process before the snap crackle pop begins Play the recording on a
low volume while you present a high-value treat You can gradually increase the vol-
ume as your dog starts associating the noises with yummy food
5 Have patience Conditioning your dog to associate fireworks with something good
takes time and multiple experiences
6 Get assistance For minor cases the experts at the GoodDog Helpline are here
for guidance More extreme cases however may require veterinary intervention

Temperament in the German Shepherd

Few people can handle really tough dogs of any breed It requires truly caring and getting inside their heads and hearts and teaching them all they missedhellipas much as is humanely possible No one can ever make up for the lost days and weeks and yearshellipof love and caring they never received But if you care you can make a good run at it Sometimes you are rewarded with a love that is boundless and enduring and way beyond any of your expectationshellipfrom such an unfortunate victim of past inhumane or simply negligent lack of concern rearing It doesnrsquot come easy and sometimes not at allhellipbut when it does it opens a new world for both of you You can sit outside with him or her at your side together for an hour or more and just watch the big white clouds go by in the blue sky with a total under-standing and sharing of the delight of a beautiful day Words become almost unnecessary as you each read the otherrsquos thoughts That is the basis for a true companionship The sharinghellipwithout the necessity of words or commands or demandshellip they are obsolete left behind as one disre-gards that which is no longer relevant or needed The true surprise is when this once tough and unreachable companion decides it is safe and time to let the lsquosecret puppyrsquo who lives in their heart come out to play with his trusted friend and palhellipthey will do all the cute puppy tricks for your delighthellip they show you their great sense of humour they have hidden all these years because no one before was worthy of sharing it They can become as trustworthy and predictable as the calendar and the days on ithellipthey trust you to love and care and adore their lsquosecret puppyrsquohellip You

6 Tips For Grooming Your German Shepherd Dog
By Jennifer Miller Jun 08 2016
Like many dogs that shed and play outside German Shepherds take some maintenance to keep them clean and your home in order Here are a few tips to maintaining your dogs beautiful coat
1 With a plush double coat daily brushing is important to lowering the shedding factor with your GSD The use of a de-shedder comb can help maintain your dogs fur
2 The German Shepherd coat has a lot of natural oils in it For a dog with a healthy coat and skin a bath is only really necessary once every 4-5 months Over-bathing the GSD coat strips the natural oils and leaves the skin dry
3 German Shepherds ldquoblowrdquo or change their coats twice a year once in the fall and once in the spring This is when the most brushing and bathing is needed
4 As active dogs German Shepherds tend to have shorter nails however every once in a while their nails need to be cut Use caution when trimming the nails because German Shepherds have black nails making them hard to see Be careful not to cut the nails too short
5 While German Shepherd Dogs donrsquot typically have floppy ears they do have deep ears which require regular cleaning and maintenance Ears should be checked to avoid a buildup of wax and debris which can cause an infection
6 Known for being a more stoic dog your GSD might not let you know if the salt from snow hurts his paws Stay alert to what your dogrsquos paws look like and check regularly for scratches or bruises

Temperament in the German Shepherd
Barbara Lee Williams
Few people can handle really tough dogs of any breed It requires truly caring and getting inside their heads and hearts and teaching them all they missedhellipas much as is humanely possible No one can ever make up for the lost days and weeks and yearshellipof love and caring they never received But if you care you can make a good run at it Sometimes you are rewarded with a love that is boundless and enduring and way beyond any of your expectationshellipfrom such an unfortunate victim of past inhumane or simply negligent lack of concern rearing It doesnrsquot come easy and sometimes not at allhellipbut when it does it opens a new world for both of you You can sit outside with him or her at your side together for an hour or more and just watch the big white clouds go by in the blue sky with a total under-standing and sharing of the delight of a beautiful day Words become almost unnecessary as you each read the otherrsquos thoughts That is the basis for a true companionship The sharinghellipwithout the necessity of words or commands or demandshellip they are obsolete left behind as one disre-gards that which is no longer relevant or needed The true surprise is when this once tough and unreachable companion decides it is safe and time to let the lsquosecret puppyrsquo who lives in their heart come out to play with his trusted friend and palhellipthey will do all the cute puppy tricks for your delighthellip they show you their great sense of humour they have hidden all these years because no one before was worthy of sharing it They can become as trustworthy and predictable as the calendar and the days on ithellipthey trust you to love and care and adore their lsquosecret puppyrsquohellip You
have won a great victory and even more a great and enduring lovehellip Prior permission given to reprint

By AKC Government Relations

Increasing demand for pets and restrictive breeder laws mean that US breeders cannot meet the demand
for dogs in the US
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates approximately one million dogs are
imported into the United States annually This has resulted in increasing reported incidents of imported
dogs bringing contagious diseases including rabies distemper canine influenza brucellosis any many
others into the United States Lax health checks and forged health certificates put our dogs our public
health and even US livestock at risk
We are contacting you because your Representative in Congress is a member of the influential Congres-
sional Veterinary Caucus andor the House Committee on Agriculture and can play an important role in
helping to protect pets and public health Please take a moment now to contact your member of Con-
gress (click the link and type your address in the ldquoFind Your Elected Officialsrdquo box) and ask them to sup-
port the bipartisan Healthy Dog Importation Act of 2020 (HR 6921) Scroll Down for information on how
you can help
About the Healthy Dog Importation Act (HR 6921)
