President’s Message:
Hello July! The summit of summer! A pinnacle for picnics! Roads for riding and great for grilling! The great
outdoors is also suited for safely socializing, fresh air dispersing droplets, six feet apart.
See upcoming social events – some online, others in person! All within public health guidelines, and the
comfort level of club participants and organizers.
2021 mountain trip destinations and dates are nearly ready for listing! The detailed annual ‘Big Newsletter’
of trips should be published by August 1. Trips big newsletter will be sent electronically, not by snail mail.
Webmaster Pam will post trips online at Piccadilly Ski Club. Please pass the word to folks out of the loop, on
how to get the scoop.
IF we have a picnic, it would be a scaled down affair - just a chance to safely socialize with friends. Folks
would bring their own picnic baskets, the club could supply cold beverages. Trip chairman Walt has worked
up a different process to kick-off trip sign-ups, not dependent on picnic, planned for first week of August.
Happy Independence Day! Enjoy the height of summer. Be safe, have fun.
Cheers! Terry
Reminder: Only 1

Off Ski Gardening 2020
A harvest of ideas shared with you by Janice Barwald
With a lot of folks sticking around home this spring and
summer, there is a boom in home gardening. A record
number of people are planting vegetables this season.
There is so much to choose from for large and small scale
planting.
Let’s talk tomatoes. Some say Illinois produces the best, most flavorful tomatoes of all states. Tomatoes
are hardy and pretty easy to grow. Whether you have yard space or just a pot on your patio, plant your
stem deep in the soil. Snip off the lower growth and go as deep as the top few leaves. Tomato stems will
push roots out the sides that help take in more water and nutrients and help the plants stay stable as
they grow. As a matter of fact, if you need one or two more plants but
don’t want to purchase a six pack at the nursery. Snip a piece of an
existing plant. Put it in a cup of water. In a few days it will start sending
out roots. Once they seem established, just plant it like any other
tomato plant and there you go. If you are one to use plant foods for
your vegetables, phosphorous is what tomatoes are looking for.
I have 8 plants now planted. 2 more soon. They make up 4 different
varieties. I started them all from seed I purchased or got from others. I
finally see more blossoms, and if I look close, I see some tomatoes.
So get planting some tomatoes. Tell me how they grow. Would you
like to share a gardening idea or tip? Send it to me
[email protected] and maybe I will add it to the next “Off Ski
Gardening “. - Janice

Sunrise Yoga in the Park, 7am, Two Fridays - July 3 and July 10

worries. This gentle, classic style yoga class is perfect for you, plus it’s set in
nature and timed to enjoy the sunrise.
• Time: 7am
• Location: Central Park, Downtown Naperville, Behind the old
Kroeher YMCA, Near Washington & Benton. Meet at the Pavilion
• Bring: Your own mat(s) and a water bottle
This outdoor event is of course, weather dependent, but
typically early morning in July is a safe bet. Wear comfortable
clothing, bring your mat(s), water bottle, and join us on one or
both Fridays! Meet at the pavilion. We will set up on the
pavement for better stability, less bugs, so bring a thicker mat,

‘Yoga” in the subject line. Namaste, Dawn Roche

your membership form and check in a basket/box at the curb and
keep going, and/or bring a lawn chair and a drink to socialize a
few minutes with me and others in my driveway or yard – with social distancing! If it rains, I’ll open my
garage door and sun room! Address: 755 Claremont Drive, Downers Grove.
It's time to renew your annual PSC membership as we get ready for another great year of trips, safe
social events and meetings. A full itinerary of ski trips is planned! By the way, our dues help offset other
club operating expenses in addition to our creative events and "fabulous" prizes that you've seen at our
meetings. Also, we love to expand our PSC family and welcome new members, so spread the word. We
appreciate your support. Thanks and welcome back! Sandy Liedtke, Membership Chair

Social Recaps, Ski Stories & Photo Gallery…
Virtual Garden Walk Recap – So, how does your garden grow? With all that stay at home time on our
hands, we had several PSC friends share their 2020 gardens. It was fun to see the beautiful yards,
creative designs, and the hard work to get them there. We had 8 virtual yards to stroll through and
there were a few more admirers that joined the group. We hope to host another of these events later in
the summer, so stay in touch with me if you’d like to be part of the fun- Janice
Zoom Happy Hour with PSC Pub Trivia, Hosted by Eileen.
Thirteen PSCers gathered online on Thursday, June 18, to socialize
and challenge our brains with a PSC Pub Trivia contest. Attendees
were encouraged to sport PSC attire. Can you believe we had two-
way ties for each of first, second and third place? Ties were
broken with a coin flip. Winners were: Jackie Dudek, third place;
Julian Franklin, second place and Vicki Schutz, first place. Fabulous
prizes were awarded—including a face mask made from a PSC
bandana. Terry Turlek gets a shout-out for the most PSC gear.

Get to know your Board:
• I was born and grew up in Decatur, Illinois, which is
the real home of the Chicago Bears. I received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history
education from Bradley University in Peoria, which is
also where I met my husband Wally who was a
biology major. (More about that later). I started my
master’s at Northern Illinois University but didn’t
finish it. Got married instead.
• I’m retired now but I’ve had all kinds of jobs. I did
actually use my teaching degree for about 4 years
teaching junior high language arts. I’ve been a
waitress, secretary for a chemical company, and worked at JCPenneys and Casual Corner to
name a few. But the weirdest job I had was working in one of those games at a carnival. It was
during the summer in Peoria at the Heart of Illinois Fair. They wanted me to go with them and
become part of the carny culture but that didn’t seem a good choice for me. But it sure was
interesting. My favorite job was teaching figure skating which I did for about 20 years. Most
recently l was a substitute teacher and before that a teaching assistant.
• Now back to meeting Wally. We first met freshman year at an exchange with my sorority and
his fraternity. But neither of us made much of an impression on the other at this time.
However, we connected again senior year at a local college bar (where else?) and the rest is
history. We got married when Wally was in his second year of dental school and I was a
teacher. We have four kids, three daughters and one son. We also have seven grandchildren,
two girls and five boys.

• Our first skiing experience was Wilmot about 43 years ago. No lessons. Just tried to figure it out
on our own. I did all kinds of things wrong like falling off the chairlift , getting stuck in a fence
and going down the hill backwards. But really liked it. We didn’t do any more skiing for about
10 years as I was busy having kids. Then there was Keystone Colorado in 1988 where our kids
tried it for the first time. After that family ski trips were the usual spring break destinations.
Steamboat and Sun Valley were our favorites.
• We joined PSC in 2002 when we discovered the PSC booth next to the beer stand at the ski
show. Appropriate location. We were trying to set up a trip on our own and thought we’d give
PSC a chance.
• We have worked hard and taken lots of lessons to improve and are intermediate level skiers.
You can only go so far when you don’t learn till you’re 35. Hard to say favorite trip as Piccadilly
offered some great trips, but the White Nights trip to Scandinavia and Russia was pretty
awesome. Switzerland was good too. Europe has great food.
• No really scary ski adventures but my two oldest daughters did try to kill me on a black run on a
family trip to Squaw Valley. I survived by sliding down on my backside. I also got stuck once in
waist deep snow at Jackson Hole while skiing with oldest daughter. I dislocated my shoulder at
Steamboat Springs. Once again a family trip. What’s with these kids? Some of the grandkids
are learning to ski and we’ve had some good times skiing with them. At least they haven’t tried
to kill me yet!
• When I’m not skiing, I like travel and spending time with my kids and grandkids which involves
travel as none of them lives less than an hour away. Wally and I have a second home in western
Illinois that we go to whenever possible. It’s in the woods and totally relaxing. He goes hunting
and I chill out. I also read a lot and crochet.
• Piccadilly has provided us with some great travel opportunities and some lasting friendships.
Going to get a beer at the ski show in 2002 turned out to be a good thing.
Have a Safe, Healthy and Happy Independence Day!
