JULY 2020

Letter from the EditorI can’t believe we are in full summer. Where has the year gone? I mean, lockdown seems to have gone so slowly; it seems ages since we’ve had a social life. But 2020 is running away with us. If I had my way, when things get back to normal, with restaurants, pubs, theatres and all other leisure businesses open again, I would rewind the year to 23rd March.

Most of us have missed out on seeing spring flowers, apple blossom, tulips and the stunning rhododendron displays; we talked about these in our April editions, encouraging you all to go and visit Langley Park to see their wonderful displays, and then we were denied the opportunity; rightly so, of course.Wouldn’t it be amazing though if we could rewind the year, if we could enjoy the four seasons of 2020 together, instead of skipping straight from winter to late summer, or even autumn? At the time of writing this there is no news of when families can safely get together. No news of when restaurants, bars and cafes are reopening, other than for takeaway. No news of when we can have a weekend away, or take that much needed holiday. I’m sure things will change a lot during the month of July, and we will find ourselves raising a glass or two in celebration of seeing friends and family again, well let’s hope so!

As a nation, our thanks continue to go to NHS staff and key workers who have got us through this challenging time. Our thoughts go to those of you who have lost loved ones, family life and job security. Our thoughts are also with businesses that didn’t make it through; it’s been tough, I’m not going to lie. Ending on a positive note, the shops have reopened which is great news. Whilst I’m not enamoured with visiting the high street, I will endeavour to visit our local independents and family run businesses who desperately need our support.Until next time, keep well, keep safe and keep smiling.Helen [email protected] 07947 349134

Midnight Walk rises from the ashes as NOT THE MIDNIGHT WALK

A local charity facing the loss of its biggest fundraising event has found a uniquely “lockdown” solution.Every year, hundreds of women, men and children from all over Buckinghamshire get together in Aylesbury to walk 5 or 10 miles to raise money for Florence Nightingale Hospice. This year, with coronavirus restrictions on mass gatherings, that will not be possible. This is a big problem for Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity because the Midnight Walk is its biggest fundraising event, raising on average £50,000 each year for hospice care in Buckinghamshire.

“How about a sunrise stroll instead?” says, Vicky Harman, Events Manager at the Charity. “It’s still a challenge to get up really early and go for a long walk. As the sun rises at 5am, walkers can set off to walk by themselves, with their household, or socially distanced with friends or family. They can walk the usual five miles, or ten miles, or they can walk further if they want to.”

“It’s not the Midnight Walk we know and love,” she says. “But it’s still a chance to challenge yourself and support your local Hospice and we’re hoping that will inspire people to join us on this virtual challenge and share their walk with us on social media.”

The walk must be a minimum of 5 miles and should start at 5am on Saturday 18th July and it can be completed in your house, garden or outside, as long as walkers comply with Government guidelines and social distancing regulations at all times.

Florence Nightingale Hospice is located at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. It provides support, palliative treatment and care for people with terminal illnesses or who are at the end of life, both at the Hospice and in their own homes across Buckinghamshire, free of charge. It also, crucially, supports them and their families at an emotionally devastating time.

Over 100 Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) and volunteers from High Wycombe and Marlow were amongst 740 who participated in Buckinghamshire Scouts “The Great Pirate Camp@Home” in early June. The event was broadcast live over Bucks Scout Radio. The event started at noon on Saturday and ran until 10.30am on Sunday. The rain and hail on the Saturday afternoon made the theme of the weekend somewhat more realistic. The children were given a task every hour throughout the time of the event. These included making a pirate hat, eye patch and a pirate boat. They were encouraged to get their parents/carers to share pictures and videos of the boats floating in the bath, sink, basin or paddling pool. The children were encouraged to make an obstacle course in either their garden or house and to “walk the plank”. Other activities over the weekend included making a passport, making up a pirate name, cooking, a scavenger hunt, building a den, take part in quizzes, making a message and putting it into a bottle and finally having a campfire.

Lots of the children called into the radio station so they could get a “shout out” live on air. Many of the parents/carers shared an array of photos across various social media channels. Sunday morning started with a workout which included escaping from the crocodile, climbing the rigging and digging for treasure.

Harry Darge aged 7 said, “It was great fun, I liked the coin toss, sleeping out in our tent, toasting marshmallows on our fire pit and making flags and balloon ship mates”

Tessa Ingram, lead volunteer for Beaver Scouts across Buckinghamshire said, “It was great to see so many Beaver Scouts participating in the event. We know that lots of parents/carers and siblings also joined in the event and we’re pretty sure that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. It was great to see families having so much fun. We provided ideas of how to make particular items and they could do them when they wanted to. We also had lots of sessions on Bucks Scout Radio where the children could share what they had made. Many of the children built dens in their lounge or bedroom and then slept in them overnight.

At this time of year many of the Beavers would be camping, or on a sleepover. We therefore wanted to provide them with something they would all enjoy.”

There are 4,000 members belonging to 119 different WIs from Olney and Sherington in the north of the county to George Green in the south and across to Chorleywood (yes, we know that is in Hertfordshire, but they didn’t want to leave us when the county lines were re-drawn!).

Disappointingly, many of our planned celebrations have had to be put on hold until next year but that hasn’t dampened our pride in being part of one of the key women’s organisations in the UK.

The first BFWI meeting took place in June 1920 at the Judges’ Lodging in Aylesbury. The Federation Chairman was Mrs. Wesley Taylor and the Federation President was the Lady Susan Trueman. The first Federation office was in the home of the Secretary, Mrs. Woodgate, at 749 London Road, High Wycombe whereas we now have our own premises on Stuart Road.

In 1920 the annual subscription was 2/- (2 shillings) which is about the same as 10p one hundred years later.

Hyde Heath WI went on an outing to Clacton in a magnificent charabanc and WIs were formed at Bledlow, Bradenham, Brill, Denham, Ickford, Milton

Keynes & Broughton and Stone with Hartwell. Some of these are still in existence so happy centenary this year to those WIs too!

We’ve been very busy supporting Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, the South East Ambulance service plus many other establishments around Buckinghamshire and Berkshire with our scrubs laundry bags and buttoned headbands – almost 7000 bags have been sewn and distributed within a month! Those linen cupboards never looked so bare!

The indomitable, resilient and inspiring characteristics of the WI members are still of value now as they were 100 years ago.

The WI is a democratic, social and educational charity operating throughout England and Wales. Membership of your local WI entitles you to attend 11 free meetings a year with speakers, demonstrators or entertainment as decided by members. You also receive the WILife membership magazine, delivered to your door eight times a year. Other gatherings, such as craft clubs, ramblers, discussion or drama groups and choirs, are also often offered by individual WIs. Federation events are organised throughout Buckinghamshire and appeal to anyone with interests in art and crafts, sports and leisure, drama, public and international affairs, ecology and conservation and more.

May 21st 2020 marked a huge milestone for the wonderful members of Buckingham Federation of WIs says Pat Poole, County Chairman. We celebrated our Centenary having been founded on the 21st May 1920.

Perhaps it’s not too late to see the woods coming back.

by Daniel Castle (Dan’s Refill Store)

We all know that paper comes from trees, but do you know how many trees the paper industry uses worldwide in a single day? It’s well over two million! We have come to depend on paper for so many things, but our current rate of consumption is unsustainable. Where is it all going and how could we use less?

PRINTING Businesses in particular use huge amounts of paper. If you have to print anything at work or home, look for alternatives, especially digital. Storing documents on computers, backed up in ‘the cloud’, saves time too.

NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES Have a look through your current subscriptions and ask yourself if they are all really necessary. Try to find other media options for the same publications. Did you know hiya bucks magazines are available online?

JUNK MAIL Does yours go straight in the bin too? Contact the relevant companies and ask to be removed from their mailing lists. Consider using the Royal Mail form, ([email protected]) and [email protected] for other delivery companies.

TOILET PAPER We could save some of the four million trees we Brits use annually keeping our posteriors pristine by making sure it comes from recycled paper. And please avoid the luxury four-ply – no-one’s bum’s worth that!

WRAPPING PAPER We can keep the fun but ditch the paper by using cloth wrapping. Buy it or make your own from old bits of material. Make it part of the gift, or ask for it back later. If everyone in Britain did that we’d save over 65,000 trees a year!

Try Ecosia search engine – they plant a tree somewhere in the world for every 45 searches you do. I think I must have planted two or three just writing this article!

It can be hard to get past the stereotypes of homelessness and to imagine that here in the heart of the Chilterns anyone could possibly face this devastating threat.

But every year, hundreds of people are made homeless in our community.

At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, laws were put in place to prevent evictions, but these are due to be lifted at the start of the summer and thousands of people will be at risk of becoming homeless.

And in the wake of the pandemic, and the impact on jobs and wages, we are anticipating a huge increase in the amount of people who need help to keep their home.

How do you stay home and stay safe if you don’t have a home?

Homelessness is always life-threating, but during a health pandemic the risk is even higher. If you don’t have a home, you can’t self-isolate protectingyourself and your loved ones.

Wycombe Homeless Connection is an independent charity working across Buckinghamshire serving those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

We provide free legal advice, support and care to people who face losing their homes. We help people understand what their rights are, what help they are entitled to and how to get it.

If you think you are at risk of homelessness, or know someone who is, get in touch today, www.wyhoc.org.uk

Migraines and MeI was eleven when I got my first migraine. This is my

story about migraines and me.

How are you coping throughout lockdown? Fortunately, I have only had two migraines since lockdown began. One was really bad (I was in tears and my boyfriend was joking about chopping my head off being the only solution - it did make me laugh) and one was mediocre. Most likely the mediocre one was because I caught it as soon as it started, taking pain killers and sleeping it off.

I feel like the levels of stress and anxiety for most people have hit the roof, does anyone else feel like that? Now I’m not diagnosed with anything of that kind but I definitely felt myself panicking about the thought of visiting a supermarket,

Email me and tell me how your lockdown is going. Sometimes talking to someone who understands what you’re going through can

really help [email protected]

or going back to my part time job at school. The worst thing about it all is that stress causes migraines, and when I get stressed I then get more stressed that I will get a migraine. Sometimes I feel dizzy from spinning around in circles.

There are so many things that people say migraine sufferers shouldn’t do... “you need to drink more”, “you shouldn’t eat chocolate”, “you’re not supposed to have caffeine”, “you shouldn’t watch TV”, “you’re sleeping too much”. Does anyone else get sick of being told what to do, or should I say what not to do?

KEEP SAVING After months of lockdown, the temptation is there to go out and spend large sums or make lots of online purchases. Of course, it’s good to treat yourself from time to time but try not to neglect your savings while doing so. Using a simple budget each month can really help with this as it can help you keep track of what disposable income you have left to spend.SHOP LOCAL When you do decide to make purchases, why not try and shop local. So often, it’s easy to get sucked into a cycle of mindlessly scrolling and ordering from large brands online. By making a conscious decision to support a smaller business you are not only boosting the local economy and making a genuine difference to local firms, you are also actively thinking more about what you buy. It is likely you may end up buying less, but more useful and beneficial products that you actually use.

Your Summer finance tips By Katie Royals

And there’s lots of great Buckinghamshire-based businesses out there you could support – just have a look through this hiya bucks magazine!TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR PENSION Even with some relaxations in the government’s guidelines, this summer is likely to be a lot quieter than most, so it could be a good time to check in with the parts of our finances we tend to ignore. Pensions are some of the most ignored assets, perhaps because we don’t immediately benefit from them, but they are so important for everyone in retirement. Now could be a good time to sort through old workplace pensions and combine them into one pot so you have a clearer idea of your total savings. Having done this, if you’re not happy with the amount you’ve saved so far, you could also consider increasing your contributions into your current workplace pension or look into setting up a private pension.

As summer fast approaches, admittedly amid unprecedented circumstances, I thought I’d offer a few tips on how to stay in control of your finances throughout these warmer months.

You can find more tips and suggestions on my blog at www.the-twenty-per-cent.com or on Twitter @TheTwentyPerce2

I have been writing about finance for two years now and was struck by the volume of tips I’ve picked up to help manage my own finances better. Realising a lot of people could also

benefit from these, I have recently launched a blog to share these insights. I’ll also be writing an article each month for hiya bucks focusing on the financial issues Buckinghamshire

residents face. It’s important to note this does not constitute financial advice and I am not a

qualified financial adviser.

As Henry Wadsworth Longfellow hundreds of years ago said “Music

is the universal language of mankind”. All around the world people

listen to the same songs even if they do not speak the same language.

Music often creates special memories, brings people together and

makes them want dance.

You may not think that you are familiar with the music of Jack Garratt but who can forget the song Surprise Yourself from the soundtrack to movie Me Before You, starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, or Water from the Netflix original movie To The Bone starring Lily Collins.

Making people dance just happens to be one of the intentions Jack Garratt had in mind when writing his new album “Love, Death & Dancing”. I had the pleasure of interviewing Jack and getting to know a little bit more about this new album or, as Jack likes to describe it, ‘dance music for people that don’t like to go out’.

Jack knows Buckinghamshire very well, having grown up in Little Chalfont. He

fondly remembers visits to his local fish and chip shop where he says “it was the best fish and chips in the whole world”. He was brought up in a house that was always full of music. With instruments everywhere (his Mum was a music teacher) he would just pick them up and play. His parents noticed his love of music early on and always supported him.

I asked Jack what his favourite song on the album was; he had to think for a few seconds before saying “that is a very, very, very hard question”. After a moment he said the song that means a lot to him is called “She will lay my body on the stone”. He refers to it as the best song he has ever written.

LOVE, DEATH & DANCING by Buckinghamshire’s Jack Garratt

The name of the album “Love, Death & Dancing“ comprises all the things the album is about and Jack just thought that it was a great sounding title. Since he decided on the title it’s created a new meaning to him because love, death and dancing are all things he is scared to do himself; scared to love himself, scared of dying and scared of dancing. At least he was before he started putting this album together. He says that this whole album was about facing those fears in himself.

I would highly recommend that you stop what you are doing and listen to “Love, Death & Dancing”. Throw your own little dance party and just enjoy yourself.

If you ever get the chance to see Jack perform live, you definitely should! His concerts are a breath-taking experience (I was lucky to see him perform live at Hammersmith Apollo). He lives for his music on stage and the energy he puts in definitely spreads to the audience. He plays all the instruments himself and just gives his all,

saying that he doesn’t want to walk off stage thinking he could have done more. Jack further doesn’t want his audience to leave and not be as sweaty and exhausted as he is after a concert.

So, for as long as this pandemic goes on, enjoy the music in your own home and get a taste of a new kind of Jack Garratt, because even if I wanted to I couldn’t compare his music to anyone else’s.

The chorus of Wooburn Green’s Zeeteah Massiah and her husband Paul Caplin’s lockdown song could not be more apt for the current times of uncertainty and division around the world. And indeed, this was their rational for choosing to cover ‘United We Stand.’ “We wanted to say something about how we feel about the world in these extraordinary times, and this 50-year-old song by Brotherhood Of Man pretty much sums it up,” the pair explained.

“United we stand, divided we fall, and if our backs should ever be against the wall,

we'll be together…”

Zeeteah Massiah & Paul Caplin

During the current lockdown, Zeeteah and Paul wanted to show their support and spread some joy to musicians, many of whom are really struggling at the moment, having lost all their income effectively overnight due to the pandemic.

It is a very scary time for musicians as there is no indication when venues will be able to open again, and even if people will feel safe attending gigs once they are allowed to take place. Paul admitted there are worries that “the world has permanently changed… and people are learning to consume music differently.”

However, they hope gigs do come back quickly as the feeling during a gig is “something you can’t put into words. You’re just buzzing for months on end,” after good performances.

Knowing many of their friends and colleagues are currently struggling, Zeeteah and Paul decided “we need to do something,” and the idea for the lockdown song was born.

In total, it took around three weeks to record the song and another three weeks to make the video. While this is a substantial amount of work, Zeeteah has always loved recording so considered it “more fun than work.” It also served as a real testament to what you can do at home, with the whole track created

without leaving their house.

And you can tell how much they’re enjoying themselves in the video, which is impossible to watch without a smile on your face. Not only does the song include a melodious soprano sax solo from Vasilis Xenopoulos, it also includes their friends and family, who filmed themselves in their own homes around the world all singing the final chorus.

“We didn’t know what our friends were going to come back with,” and they

Billboard Dance Charts. Throughout her career Zeeteah has worked with some world-renowned artists including Tom Jones, Robbie Williams, Phil Collins and French Rock icon, the late Johnny Hallyday.

In 2012, Zeeteah returned to the UK from Germany to live with Paul, at which point she formed her own band again. Since then we've been playing in mostly West End venues to sold out audiences.

Meanwhile, Paul, who shares her passion for music, played with a pop group in the 1980s. However, while he never stopped making music, it became more of a hobby to him as he found himself busy running software companies, the last of which he sold five years ago.

In fact, he said: “I didn’t realise how much I missed [making music] until I started working with Zeeteah.”

For those enjoying the song, there’s much more to come from Zeeteah and Paul. Having already written two albums together, Juice and Maybe Tomorrow, they’re currently working on the third, which will include lots of original songs and reggae beats. “My love of reggae is back in full swing and now I have a wicked new reggae line up,” Zeeteah noted.

didn’t disappoint, they all entered into the spirit, one even created a pole dance to the song. “It’s just lovely they all took the time,” Zeeteah said.

The duo has been “astonished” by the response to the song, which at the time of writing has amassed nearly 5,000 views on YouTube in just over a week, with very little promotion. It’s even been picked up by radio stations and played on air.

Zeeteah is no stranger to the music world, having been singing as long as she can remember. Born in Barbados, she came to the UK with her parents and sister as part of the Windrush generation when she was six. She released her first record when she was just 17. Since then, she’s had a prolific career, which has taken her all over the world.

At 21, she fronted her first band, Lady Love. They toured Poland and became the first European band to play behind the Iron Curtain. She’s also starred on the West End in Little Shop of Horrors, where she played Chiffon.

Later in her 20s she discovered house music and recorded lots of records, many of which were successful in the UK and one even hit number 1 in the US

REVIEW

When you have the opportunity of eating the finest food cooked by a professionally trained chef you know you are in for a treat. This is food cooked by Lewis Twydle. It’s cooked with love, with patience and with so much flavour it’s insane how good it tastes. The lobster mac&cheese was rich, indulgent and packed with large pieces of lobster. The wild mushroom arancini with a side of truffle mayonnaise was deliciously moreish, and the tender lamb rump with accompanying lamb shoulder croquette was divine and deliciously wholesome. However, it was the chicken tagine and accompanying couscous from his Middle Eastern Tapas menu that had us talking. Honestly, we could eat this over and over again. The couscous was the best thing ever, and that’s not to take away from the other dishes as we enjoyed them all. Even my husband, who

Flavour, Flavour, FlavourThat’s what you get with food cooked by Lewis Twydle

has always disliked couscous, is now a convert saying “if couscous tasted that amazing all the time I would order it any day”. Both the chicken and lamb tagines had so much flavour, a serious amount of flavour, a flavour we want to enjoy time and time again. Sitting in the garden, in the warm sunshine, the tagines took us to faraway places with their exotic spices and seasonings; they made us feel like we were on holiday (not on lockdown). To round off, we enjoyed the chocolate mousse with cherries, tonka bean and homemade honeycomb. It was heavenly, indulgent but not overly rich, smooth, chocolatey and scrumptious and we loved it! We loved everything, in fact, we were very happy people!Order from Lewis Twydle for a professional service with food that oozes flavour and takes your mind to a place that we are not able to physically go to at this moment in time.

Owners Nhung Pham and her husband Nhan Nguyen have a passion for food. They have created the whole menu themselves with (almost) everything made onsite; glass noodles are very hard to create in our English climate so we will let them off importing these directly from Vietnam.

SUUM VIETNAMESE KITCHEN LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE!

The food was fresh and full of flavour! The Saigon Sizzling Pancake was honestly one of the best things I’ve eaten in a while, I would order it again right now! My mouth is even watering just thinking about it.

The chilli tofu tower was spicy with soft and fluffy tofu pieces, the sauce complimented the whole dish really well. Served with fresh chillies and onion it had that real kick we love!

The spring rolls were crispy, tasty and moreish; we loved them! They are made with rice giving the batter a crispier coating and crunchy bite to them.

I chose the traditional Vietnamese dish Pho, which is a noodle soup. They have a variety of choice but this time I was tempted by the beef and brisket option. With a generous portion this dish was great; go for this option if you like a nutty peanut sauce!

A gluten free, nut free, vegan or vegetarian diet does not restrict you in any way from eating at this restaurant (currently offering take away only due to Covid-19). All the dietary requirements are listed on their menu, making it really easy for you to know exactly what you can, or can’t, order.

It is great to know we have this tasty take out whilst in lockdown, but we do look forward to dining in and seeing the lovely Pham again soon.

Modern supply chains work on a just in time system meaning there is only enough product and raw material in the chain to cover usual demand. When demand increases by between 100% and 400%, it can lead to widescale shortages and, depending on how quickly products can be manufactured, the gap in supply can last weeks.

Whilst all the Partners I work with were proud to be "feeding the nation", we did feel disappointed that we couldn't maintain our usual availability standards, or offer enough online deliveries. Toilet rolls, pasta, flour, sugar, cleaning products and hand soap all took a turn in widespread shortages, and it felt really uncomfortable having empty shelves and disappointed customers.

As the country went into lockdown shopping habits changed greatly and we adapted to home cooking rather than eating out. The UK public has been incredibly resourceful, substituting products and getting creative with making their own yeast for sourdough bread.

With hospitality shut down the demand for supermarket beers and wines has also gone up to higher than Christmas levels. Waitrose stores have a great range of wines, supported by wine specialist Partners on hand to offer advice. Although the beers can never be quite as good as supping a pint at your local, there are still some great bottled beers to try!

As Covid-19 set in, and we started getting used to the 2m social distancing guidelines, the shop

felt like a strange place with anxious customers not talking or making eye contact, and our Partners trying to keep out of the way unable to offer the usual service. Happily, as people have become used to the situation, we are back to having conversations with customers and enjoying a hello as they arrive.

All stores have set safe limits for the number of customers to allow for shopping in a socially distanced way. Customers have been incredibly kind and understanding around the queues outside shops, and we’ve been so lucky that the weather has been on our side. Many customers have chosen to shop alone which is amazing as it means the queue is shorter and customers will wait less time to shop. Whilst in store customers have also been considerate and caring, waiting to move around in a safe way.

Looking around the store now the general availability is good; we always knew people wouldn't starve.

To help keep everyone safe we have had to make some other changes. We had to turn off our coffee machines and remove the green tokens for the Community Matters Scheme (we hope these are reinstated soon). We have continued to support the local community with the normal monthly good cause donations directed to food banks and additional support going to local groups, hospitals and care homes through an emergency community fund.

Don’t forget, you can pick up copies of hiya bucks in the following Waitrose stores: AMERSHAM, BEACONSFIELD, GERRARDS CROSS, HAZLEMERE AND HIGH WYCOMBE

WAITROSE& PARTNERS

I'D LIKE TO USE THIS ARTICLE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING OVER THE MONTHS WHILE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC REACHED ENGLAND AND CHANGED ALL OUR LIVES.THINKING BACK TO MARCH 2020, WE WENT THROUGH A HUGE NUMBER OF CHALLENGES AND CHANGES.

Initially, before the lockdown was announced, we experienced panic buying like never before. While there were calls for customers to only buy what they needed, with everybody topping up on essentials concerned that they may not be able to get out, the demand for products was much greater than Christmas; an event we plan for months in advance and build stock levels up.

WAITROSE& PARTNERS

We have also had to close checkouts to allow paying customers to be 2m away from each other. There are now trials taking place to try to provide protection around checkouts so more can be opened. Waitrose has also accelerated plans to increase the number of delivery slots available, recruiting new Partners at pace and investing in the infrastructure.

We have additional cleaning measures in store with our cleaners completing extra daily cleans, as well as our Partners working through the day to keep contact points, trolleys and baskets clean; I think we have all complained about sore skin on our hands as the number of times we wash them has multiplied.

The producers and supply chains have done some amazing work to improve availability back to a good level, but there are still some areas we struggle to maintain. For example, our Fair Trade brown sugar is picked by hand in Mauritius and with social distancing in place the pickers can't keep up with demand.

In a time of great change I hope our customers have found some excellent products to help with success in producing wonderful meals and cakes at home. We will continue to follow advice and offer as wide a range of products as possible.

I really hope the weather remains good over the coming months and everyone can enjoy entertaining in their gardens around the BBQ.

To all our customers and friends stay safe and healthy.

If you’re looking for real home cooked Caribbean food with tons of flavour, look no further.

Island Vibes Kitchen is a small business in High Wycombe that only recently opened. Due to COVID-19 they had major concerns about their brand new business struggling.Their takeaway and delivery service operates on Saturdays between 2pm-9pm. With mains, sides, desserts and even drinks to purchase they have covered all bases. We tasted their chickpea curry with a side of mango slaw and bakes; their vegan option. The curry was so tasty and extremely filling; all portions were very generous so make sure you’re hungry! The mango slaw had juicy chunks of sweet mango that combined well with the tangy cabbage flavour.

For the meat eaters the chicken roti was our favourite. The meat was cooked really well and had a lovely flavour. If you don’t mind eating off the bone then the goat curry we had was lovely, we would have that again! The crispy battered fishcakes were tasty, something we don’t usually eat so they were nice for a change. The BBQ chicken and the mac&cheese were also really good. The mac&cheese was especially cheesy which was right up our street. The dessert was amazing! Lemon cheesecake with a buttery biscuit base, a proper lemony flavour that was soft and creamy, velvety and

indulgent and it definitely had the homemade factor; we could eat this every day of the week without hesitation! All of their dishes, dips and sauces are homemade and their meat can be halal on request.

For the shortbread; preheat the oven to 170ºC and line a 20cm square baking tray with baking paper. Beat the butter together with the sugar until soft. Stir the flour into the butter to create a firm, smooth mixture. Press the mixture into the baking tin and smooth out using the back of a metal spoon. Use a fork to lightly prick holes all over the shortbread.

Bake in the middle of the oven for 20-25 minutes until lightly golden and firm. For the caramel; gently heat the sugar and butter in a saucepan, stirring constantly, until melted. Add the condensed milk and bring to a boil, stirring continuously. Cook for a minute or so or until the filling has thickened. Pour the caramel over the base. Leave aside until the caramel has set.For the chocolate layer; melt the two chocolates in separate bowls over saucepans of simmering water. Pour the dark/milk chocolate over the caramel and then creatively decorate with the melted White Chocolate. Allow to chill outside of the fridge until set. Remove from the baking tin by lifting the baking paper up and out. Cut your millionaire shortbread into 16 squares – heat a sharp knife by dipping it in hot water and drying it on kitchen towel to make it easier to cut through the chocolate if it is really firm.

This is literally my favourite sweet treat! Biscuit, caramel and chocolate – what more could you need?

Unlike the traditional one, I’ve added some white chocolate in the mix to decorate as you like – be it feathers or splodges, I’m sure it will look amazing! All photos are results from a

Like many of us during lockdown, Dave Peek wanted to find restaurant quality wines to enjoy at home. However, after trawling through

supermarkets and searching online, he couldn’t find what he was looking for anywhere. And so, the Marlow & Henley Wine Co. was born.

Having been in the alcohol business his whole working life, Dave has experience in buying and wholesale / distribution, and in recent years has run his own business, distributing alcoholic drinks to supermarkets, restaurants and bars. However, a large part of his business dried up overnight when venues were ordered to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This led to him launching his retail business, selling wine, beer, cider and spirits to the general public - something he had never done before.

But it’s “not a stop-gap, it’s more of a strategic decision.” Dave is very keen to make sure the business is sustainable after the lockdown, rather than just a temporary venture to tide them over while hospitality businesses can’t open. This meant he was even more careful to make sure he went through all the proper channels and set up the business correctly, which included applying for, and being

granted, a retail license and building his own website from scratch. While there have been challenges, Dave acknowledges “a lot of the building

blocks were already there” from his experience with the wholesale side of the business, which has given him a slight advantage. He makes all the deliveries himself, usually the next day, so is currently only serving the Marlow, Henley, Cookham and Bourne End areas, but may look to increase this as the business grows. However, he is focused on remaining local and not planning on turning the business into a national one. You can also now find a selection of the company’s wines, craft beers and ciders in Strawberry Grove Marlow’s farm shop.In terms of the selection on offer, there’s a great range. Over the past few weeks, I tried some of the wines and ciders, which fitted perfectly with the variable weather we’ve had. I tried the Angioletti cider first, which is very personal to Dave as it’s actually his company’s cider and he’s been heavily involved in its production. Sat outside in the garden while catching up with some friends on Zoom, it felt almost as if I was in a beer garden. The sparkling apple flavours created a lovely taste, adding to an already enjoyable evening.Perfect for a celebration, the Angel & Four English Sparkling Wine was enjoyed on a hot summer’s evening, celebrating a family birthday. Again, the Angel & Four is a personal favourite of Dave’s and I can see why. The smooth flavours made for easy and enjoyable drinking, while

the bubbles added a touch of class to the occasion, bringing some much needed joy to these difficult times.Meanwhile the two red wines I tried went really well with a Sunday roast, adding warmth to the meal when the thought of being outside in the cold and rain was less than inviting. I particularly enjoyed the Chateau Labarrade Cahors Malbec; the richness of which perfectly complemented the strong flavours of a roast dinner.

Capitalising on the sunny weather of a few weeks ago, the Haut Poitou Sauvignon Blanc and the Exhib’ Rosé – Cap d’Agde made the perfect accompaniment for a barbecue. Both were light and made us feel as if we were eating by the beach in a tropical country. The rosé comes in a bespoke bottle, making it the perfect gift for a friend or perhaps the ideal bottle to bring out if you’re entertaining this summer, from a social distance of course!

We would share our lunch breaks in the colleague room and find ourselves in the foyer at the same time; Pat promoting the phone shop and myself fundraising (very often sharing a table). We would cover each other’s little breaks and have a good old natter in between speaking to customers.

Little did I know then that we would become very good friends, or how much we would go on to work together on various community ventures after Pat left Tesco's. Before Pat left she told me about a wonderful idea and asked for my help and support regarding a group that was forming to raise awareness for Dementia.

I went along to the first meeting, not having a clue what to expect, and certainly knowing nothing about dementia other than what I had experienced as a child with my grandparents in care homes. Back then it wasn't something that was talked about very much, other than Granny has gone a bit ga ga (a horrible term) which thank goodness has been replaced with 'living with dementia'. I had since encountered a couple of isolated incidents in store with customers living with dementia.

Tesco's friendship with Wycombe District Dementia Action group (WDDA) Back in October 2016 Tesco opened their telephone shop in Loudwater store. This is when I met Patricia Buckland who started working in the shop.

Hi, my name is Claire Dicker and I am Community Champion for Tesco Loudwater

in the Community

A BIG THANK YOU to all who support me, I could NOT do this without you.Thank you. Loudwaters' Tesco Claire

As the meetings progressed I met more people involved with all aspects of this horrible disease, not just the carers and loved ones, but also the professionals that deal with the legal aspects like power of attorney, care home fees and all the other things you don't really think about, and importantly the community groups that support everyone affected.

I was determined to throw myself in to supporting this group and learn as much as I could so as I could then help others. I was asked to be involved with Dementia Awareness Week (which is what it says on the tin) making people aware not only how widespread dementia is, but also about how much help is actually available.

I volunteered to do an experiment in store where I was kitted out with a 'frailty suit', a bit of kit that basically simulates the symptoms that people living with dementia have to cope with, including limited vision, hearing, feelings, reduced co-ordination plus the confusion and exhaustion that comes with it. I was given a shopping list and sent off to shop whilst giving a running commentary about the difficulties I encountered and describing how I felt.

As you can imagine, colleagues and customers were both interested to know what was going on so we were on our way to RAISING AWARENESS, but this was just the beginning of so much more to come!
