Friends in Christ,

The saying we see on billboards and hear in commercials is “Freedom isn’t free.” A price has to be paid for freedom from that which enslaves you. For the independence of our nation that we celebrate on the 4th, it was the American Revolution where many gave their lives for freedom. For the emancipation of slaves, it was the Civil War, the War Between the States again where many gave their lives for freedom. But when it comes to that which enslaves us all, it took one Savior who gave His life for us all.

Our freedom as Christians rests on Christ alone. Because He died for our sins and rose from the dead, we are free from sin and death and Satan’s power. Our freedom in America is only as certain as the frailty of sinful people, but our freedom in Christ is rock solid. May God grant us the continued freedom to worship Him in peace and quietness. May God continue to grant us freedom to serve Him and our neighbor in Christian love.

I spent the past week in a state and a city I had never before visited, Mobile, Alabama. Baseball great, Hank Aaron hails from there. Mardi Gras was first celebrated there. 3,100 women and men gathered there for the National LWML Convention. As delegates voted to approve $2.1 million for missions in the next two years, we listened to reports on how previous funds had been spent to bring Christ to places around the world and in our own backyard. The projects that will be funded this biennium are Water and Word for Rural Schools in Kenya; Teach Me Too-Preschoolers with Learning Needs; Mission Outreach for At-Risk Young Women in Africa; God’s Grace for This Generation-LAMP Ministry; God’s Word Changes Everything-Lutheran Bible Translators; Mobile Medical Mercy Mission Bus for Guatemala; Restoring Hope for Detroit Children and Families; Lights for Christ Scholarships-Guatemala; Wind River Indian Reservation Transportation; Ministry in Motion-Trinity Lutheran Church, Mobile, Alabama; Touching the Living Word-Lutheran Braille Workers; Women’s Witness and Mercy Asia; Digital Media Development-Lutherans For Life; Hope and Healing Hub of Downtown Lincoln-University Lutheran Chapel, Lincoln, Nebraska; Mission Training Center, Africa; KFUO Radio; Sri Lanka Multipurpose Building Construction; Making Jesus Known in the United States Ethnic Communities; Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care, El Paso, Texas; and LCMS Deaconess Ministry.
