Mr. Saravana Kumar
Market Review for the month of July 2019
Domestic Markets
The month of July saw Sensex & Nifty 50 posting negative returns, down 4.86% & 5.69% respectively. In line with the broad indices performance, S&P BSE Midcap index was down by 7.87% while S&P BSE Small Cap index was also down by 10.87%. Among the BSE sectorial indices, consumer durables & auto saw a severe decline.
In the Union budget, the government revised its fiscal deficit target downwards to 3.3% of GDP for FY20 from 3.4% of GDP set in the interim budget. It has retained its market borrowing numbers for FY20 at Rs 710,000 Cr while the net borrowing is budgeted at Rs 473,122 Cr. The government also announced its plan to issue sovereign bond overseas. The system liquidity improved significantly in the month of June. The average liquidity surplus for the month of July was about INR 1285 bn as against INR 490 bn deficit in the month of June. One year CD rate closed the month at 6.88% as
against 7.18% in the previous month. The 10 year G-Sec benchmark closed the month at 6.37% as compared to 6.88%. 10 year AAA PSU closed at 7.59% as compared to 7.92%. INR appreciated against USD during the month and closed the month at 68.80 as compared to 69.03. The Brent crude oil prices closed the month at $65.17 per barrel as compared to $66.55 per barrel in the previous month.
Domestic macro data
CPI inflation for the month of June came at an 8-month high of 3.18% compared to the May estimate of 3.05% as a result of seasonal rise in food prices. However, core inflation eased to 4.04% compared to 4.21% in the previous month. Wholesale Price Inflation (WPI) came in at 2.02% for June-19, its lowest level since July-17, due to lower rise in prices of Fuel and Power constituents and favorable base effect. IIP index in May slowed to 3.1% as against revised estimate of April at 4.3%. India’s trade deficit narrowed slightly to USD 15.27 Bn in June compared to USD 15.36 Bn in May. Fiscal deficit for Apr-June 2019 period came at Rs 4.32 Lac Cr (61.4% of BE FY20). Total revenues stood at Rs 2.89 Lac Cr (10.4% of RE), while fiscal spending stood at Rs 7.22 Lac Cr (25.9% of BE).
Outlook
In line with expectations, the Federal open market committee (FOMC) delivered a 25 bps rate cut. However, a remark by US Fed Chairman that the cut was a “mid-cycle adjustment” spooked the market, which interpreted it as no more cuts in the near future. The US-China trade war has escalated recently leading to global risk aversion. Domestic growth has continued to show sign of weakness with sectors like Auto and real estate in deep stress. The pace of monsoon has peaked up recently and oil prices seems to be stabilizing on account of global growth outlook which will give MPC comfort to address domestic growth by reducing repo rate by 25 bps in the upcoming policy. Markets will be keenly waiting for the System Liquidity framework and the Bimal Jalan committee report on RBI’s Economic capital framework (ECF).
From the equity market perspective, NBFC crisis is finally trickling down to almost all the sectors where earlier the issue was availability of capital, which is now converting into demand slowdown. Automobile sale in the month of July 2019 has seen one of the biggest declines of last 18 years. Almost all FMCG companies are mentioning that the rural stress is finally taking its toll on the consumption due to consistently low food inflation and bad monsoon. We are coming at the last leg of Q1FY20 results and the picture is not pretty so far. Below average monsoon is making things worse. Resolution of NPA cases in NCLT continues to be tepid and we believe in a slow moving economy, the resolutions will be far and few. Bimal Jalan committee report is awaited eagerly regarding the quantum and timeframe of transfer of RBI surplus funds to Government of India. Considering the larger slowdown, fiscal and monetary measures are being called by the experts. This also gains significance considering the fact that worldwide central governments and central banks are using all possible tools to prop up the economies. Diversion from fiscal path has its implications.
Despite all the negatives outlined above, equity markets continue to trade above their long term averages because flows to the money management industry still are positive. We believe it is in the interest of the small investor to stick to systematic investment plans (SIPs).

How to read the Factsheet
Fund Manager: An employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the scheme. He is usually part of a larger team of fund managers and research analysts.Application Amount for Fresh Subscription:This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.Minimum Additional Amount:This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.Yield to Maturity:The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual rate. The YTM factors in the bond’s current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.SIP:SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investment of a fixed sum. It works similar to a recurring bank deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs. 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.NAV:The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.Benchmark:A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment performance of mutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10- year Gsec.Entry Load:A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the time of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent.Entry load is charged at the time an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the time of investment. For instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs. 101.Note: SEBI, vide circular dated June 30, 2009 has abolished entry load and mandated that the upfront commission to distributors will be paid by the investor directly to the distributor, based on his assessment of various factors including the service rendered by the distributor.Exit Load:Exit load is charged at the time an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is deducted from the prevailing NAV at the time of redemption. For instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the exit load is 1%, the redemption price would be Rs. 99 per unit.Modified Duration:Modified duration is the price sensitivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield.Standard Deviation:Standard Deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment’s performance. When a mutual fund has a high standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.Sharpe Ratio:The Sharpe Ratio, named after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.Beta:Beta is a measure of an investment’s volatility vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile than the market. A beta of greater than 1 implies that the security’s price will be more volatile than the market.AUM:AUM or assets under management refers to the recent/ updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund or any investment firm.Holdings:The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund’s latest or updated reported statement of investments/ securities. These are usually displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is being invested by the fund manager.Nature of Scheme:The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund. Likewise, a mutual fund that aims at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have sub-categories.Rating Profile:Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.Portfolio Turnover:Portfolio Turnover is a measure of how frequently assets within a fund are bought and sold by the managers.R-Squared:R-Squared is a statistical measure that represents the percentage of a fund or security’s movements that can be explained by movements in a benchmark index.Average Maturity:In a mutual fund containing debt securities, Average Maturity is the average amount of time until the debt securities mature.Portfolio Yield:Portfolio Yield is computed by determining the cash flows for the portfolio and determining the interest rate that will make the present value of the cash flows equal to the market value of the portfolio.Total Expense Ratio:Weighted Average i.e. Total Expense of the month / average Asset / number of days in month* days in a year.
Tax on Dividend Distribution Nature Individual/HUF Domestic Companies

Macaulay DurationThe Macaulay duration is the weighted average term to maturity of the cash flows from a bond. It is the measure of bonds sensitivity to interest rate changes. The weight of each cash flow is determined by dividing the present value of the cash flow by the price. Macaulay duration can be calculated:
n
t=1∑ t * C
(1+y)t
n * M
(1+y)n
Current Bond PriceMacaulay Duration =
+
Where:
t = respective time period
C = periodic coupon payment
y = periodic yield
n = total number of periods
M = maturity valueCurrent Bond Price = Present value of cash flows
Example Calculation
The calculation of Macaulay duration is straightforward. Assume there is a bond priced at ` 1,000 that pays a 6% coupon and matures in six years available at a Yield to Maturity (YTM) of 6%. The bond pays the coupon once a year, and pays the principal on the final payment. Given this, the following cash flows are expected over the next six years.
Cash FlowYear 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 6
` 60 ` 60 ` 60 ` 60 ` 60 ` 1,060
With the periods and the cash flows known, a discount factor must be calculated for each period. This is calculated as 1 / (1 + r)^n, where r is the interest rate and n is the period number in question. Thus the discount factors would be,
Discount FactorYear 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 Year 60.9434 0.8900 0.8396 0.7921 0.7473 0.7050
Next, multiply the year’s cash flow by the year number and by its corresponding discount factor to find the present value of the cash flow.\
Period Present value formula Present ValueYear 1 1 * ` 60 * 0.9434 ` 56.60
Year 2 2 * ` 60 * 0.8900 ` 106.80
Year 3 3 * ` 60 * 0.8396 ` 151.13
Year 4 4 * ` 60 * 0.7921 ` 190.10
Year 5 5 * ` 60 * 0.7473 ` 224.18
Year 6 6 * ` 1,060 * 0.7050 ` 4,483.55
Sum these values = ` 5,212.36 = numerator
Current Bond Price = sum of PV Cash Flows = 60/(1 + 6%)^1 + 60/(1 + 6%)^2 +...+ 1060/(1 + 6%)^6 = ` 1,000 = denominator
Macaulay duration = ` 5,212.36 / ` 1,000 = 5.21
A coupon paying bond will always have its duration less than its time to maturity. In the example above, the duration of 5.21 years is less than the time to maturity of 6 years.
