Everyone is Welcome

“Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime;

July 2019 A Word From Pastor Fewell

June 18, 2019

Dear High Street Friends,

Sunday May 05 you were informed about a change in pastoral leadership at High Street. Since then the Bishop’s Cabinet has organized a series of moves which have resulted in Jilaine and me moving back to Columbus effective August 1. I will be retiring and I have been offered a part-time pastoral appointment to St. Luke’s on Fifth serving in the Grandview Area of Columbus. An introduction of High Street’s New Pastor is imminent. You will be hearing more information about that appointment soon.

I want to thank you for all your support and prayers. Jill and I have a new home, 2706 Talisman Court, in the Berwick area, We love the home and are excited about being closer to all the kids and grandkids. It has been my privilege and honor to serve with you here at High Street. You and your new pastor will be in my prayers.

My last Sunday in the pulpit now will be July 21. we will be moving out of the parsonage the week of July 22, taking some vacation days for the move. If we do not get the opportunity to say our goodbyes to you personally, I want to thank you and express our deepest gratitude for your support and prayers. Together we serve an awesome God who always exceeds our expectations. You and I will always be under God’s compassionate care and direction. That should give you hope as it does Jilaine and me.

Your Brother in Christ,

Dr. Larry Steven Fewell Pastor

Church and Community Efforts to End Racism

June 30th-August 4th

The leadership of Downtown Churches have organized and scheduled a six-part

speaker series called Becoming Beloved Community: Understanding the Challenge of Racial

Division in Springfield. The series began Sunday June 30 at 4:00 pm with Preshuslee Thompson

from the OSU Kirwan Institute leading a discussion about ways racism becomes a feature of a

community’s social practices. July 7 Rev. John Boopalan, Princeton professor and author of “Memory, Grief, and Agen-

cy” will begin a conversation about how historical injustices reverberate in present-day practices. July 14 and 21 Dar-

nell Carter, former county prosecutor and author of “The 1904, 1906, and 1921 Race Riots in Springfield Ohio” will cov-

er the history of race-based violence in Springfield, including the 1965 murder of Ralph Stinnett. July 28 we will facili-

tate a panel discussion led by Denise Williams, NAACP Springfield President with reflections on their personal experi-

ences from childhood until today. The series will conclude August 4 with Cherie Bridges Patrick coaching participants

about how we think and talk to each other about racism. All six gatherings are at 4:00 pm on Sunday at the Central

Community Center (102 W High Street). Registration for the series is $20.00. Participating leadership congregations

include High Street UMC, Central Christian, Christ Episcopal, Covenant UMC, First Baptist, First Lutheran, Covenant and

High Street Hospitality

Monday, June 10 we had the pleasure of host-

ing an overnight stay of 50 youth and youth

leaders from On the Rock Ministries, who

are biking from their hometown of

Bartlesville, Oklahoma to northern Ohio. The

Rock's vision is to sponsor and promote edu-

cational, charitable, cultural events for disad-

vantaged children and youth, which will intro-

duce young people to a life-changing,

life-saving relationship with Jesus Christ. They

ate every bit of three crock pots of food, corn-

bread and rolls, and cookies because they

rode 51 miles that day! What a delightful

group of people! We enjoyed them and they

really appreciated our hospitality!

A Note From Leadership Council The Leadership Council is looking for some helpers in

3 particular areas:

Ushering, Greeting and Communion Preparation.

All 3 of these tasks are very important to our worship

experience and will not require a lot of your time. The

need is for both services and so we need helpers from

both. We have people who have agreed to coordinate

these groups, and now they need people to fill the

roles. The request is not to do this weekly, but to

commit to your place in the schedule and then show

up. These tasks are open to men, women, and youth

of all ages. If you are willing to help in one of these

areas, please call Lisa in the office (322-2527) and she

will pass your name on to the coordinator.

Thank you in advance for your willingness to play a

part in this ministry.

Tidbits About July

July is the seventh month of the year, has 31 days, and is named after Julius Caesar.

July is also the seventh month of the year in

the Julian calendar. The month of July was

previously called Quintilis in Latin as it was

the fifth month in the ancient Roman calen-

dar. The name of the month was changed to

July in honor of Julius Caesar during

the Julian calendar reform.

Middle English - Julie

Latin name - Julius mensis - Month of

Julius

Latin - quintilis mensis - Fifth month

In modern times, July also has 31 days. It is

the warmest month of the year in the North-

ern Hemisphere and coldest month in the

Southern hemisphere.

Lily. The birthstone for July is the ruby which

symbolizes contentment.
