Christ Moravian Church July 2018 FELLOWSHIP MESSENGER Dave’s Devotional A Psalm of Summer’s Siren Edward Mays, Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim, Forest of Peace Publishing, Inc:, 1989. I Salute you, God of rest and vacations, who laid down the law that every seventh day must be free. No work for beast, man or woman was your legal word. On this summer day, when my heart longs for leisure, my head tells me, “it’s time to go to work.” I wish I had an extra Sabbath to enjoy your gift of liberty and peace. Part of me is so grown-up, and knows how to be productive, to be responsible and to achieve. I have learned to listen to that inner adult and how to successfully silence the echoes of childhood’s play. I may know and possess more, but I’ve lost something in being a repeat offender, O God, in breaking your law of Seventh Day Vacations. I have forgotten how to vacate my work, to come out of my head and go out-of-doors, to play with you in the summer sun. As the summer months are upon us let us each try to refresh ourselves through that practice of “remembering the Sabbath day and keeping it holy.” As our busy summers are filled with camps, vacations, family reunions, cookouts, etc. let us be reminded that God cannot fill our cups if they are already full. The practice of trying to honor the Sabbath invites us to empty our cups again so that we might be filled with the Holy Spirit. With the joy of serving Christ together, The Rev. Dr. David A. Marcus, Jr. All items to be included in the newsletter must be submitted to the church office by the 20 th of the month.

FELLOWSHIP MESSENGER

Dave’s Devotional

A Psalm of Summer’s Siren

Edward Mays, Prayers for a Planetary Pilgrim, Forest of Peace Publishing, Inc:, 1989.

I Salute you, God of rest and vacations, who laid down the law that every seventh day must be free.

No work for beast, man or woman was your legal word. On this summer day, when my heart longs for leisure,

my head tells me, “it’s time to go to work.”

I wish I had an extra Sabbath

to enjoy your gift of liberty and peace. Part of me is so grown-up,

and knows how to be productive, to be responsible and to achieve.

I have learned to listen to that inner adult and how to successfully silence

the echoes of childhood’s play. I may know and possess more, but I’ve lost something

in being a repeat offender, O God, in breaking your law of Seventh Day Vacations.

I have forgotten how to vacate my work, to come out of my head and go out-of-doors,

to play with you in the summer sun.

With the joy of serving Christ together,

The Rev. Dr. David A. Marcus, Jr.

… that Disaster Relief Efforts by Moravians, Methodists, and Richard Petty Motor Sports and Roush-Fenway Racing have created a “Ground Effect” in Lumberton, NC? Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 left thousands homeless and 31 killed. Participants with this collaborative effort made 28 trips to Lumberton over a 14-month period. Initially, they set to work mucking houses, piling belongings and discarded rubble on the curbs.

Although a few people were lost, thousands have been saved and many have moved back into their homes. There is at least 3 years of work left since initially 660 roads and 26,000 homes were washed out. If you and/or people in your congregation are interested in helping with this relief effort, go to the Board of World Mission website www.moravianmission.org and complete the contact information under the Connect Section. You may also contact Jill Kolodziej for more information at [email protected].
