Fight the Bite

It’s that time of the year

again, what we affectionately

call “Mosquito Season”. The

rainy season is finally here and there may

be a lot of standing water in some areas.

Twelve Oaks residents are encouraged to

follow these simple rules to help control the

breeding of mosquitoes in their own

backyards:

Keep all containers that can hold water

in your yards empty. Mosquitoes love

to lay their eggs in stagnant water!

Dump and refill all pets’ water bowls

and bird baths every two to three days -

that way the water doesn’t become

stagnant and evolve into a “breeding

site”.

If you have bromeliads or other

trumpet-type, water-holding plants,

sprinkle some Sevin Dust on them to

keep them from becoming a ”breeding

site”. It won’t harm the plants and is

readily available.

Try to stay indoors at dawn and dusk.

If you must go outside during these

times, wear long sleeved shirts and

pants, and spray yourself with a

mosquito repellant, preferably one that

contains DEET. The label will list the

chemicals.

Educate your neighbors and friends on

how they can help control mosquitoes,

so you are not eliminating a breeding

site on your property, only to have

them come over to visit from next

door.

To report mosquito problems in your area

or to request service, contact Mosquito

Control at 635-5400. Their staff will

investigate the areas where complaints

originate. Staff will either treat the isolated

area where they find larvae or send night

drivers, with the spray trucks, out to the

community to handle it.

It’s Hurricane Season

– Are you ready? The

most important thing

that you can do is to be

informed and prepared!

Disaster prevention

includes both being

prepared as well as being safe. ►Prepare

a hurricane survival kit that includes food,

water, medicine, and batteries for you,

your family, and your pets. ►Secure

important documents including insurance

papers in waterproof bags or containers

►Pre-register special needs or elderly

residents that may need assistance at a

Special Needs Shelter. ►Keep up with

weather developments and official

instructions as storms form so you have

plenty of time to secure your home, boat,

pets, and family. For hurricane

information contact Hillsborough County

Emergency Management at 236-3800 or

Homeowners – Beware of cut-rate prices

for tree trims! If you hire a tree trimmer

who offers you a great deal, beware:

Improper work can kill your tree.

Uninsured workers can become a

nightmare. Protect yourself by insisting

on a written estimate of the work. It

should include all details of the work to

be performed, including debris disposal,

cleaning the work area, and removal of all

cut limbs. Never pay for the entire job

upfront and final payment shouldn't be

made until the job is completed to your

satisfaction.

Sheriff’s Office needs crossing guards. School starts August 10th and the

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is

looking to fill numerous crossing guard

positions throughout Hillsborough

County. Crossing Guards are responsible

for the safety of children crossing busy

streets and intersections to and from

school. It is necessary to maintain a

pleasant, courteous, and helpful attitude

toward the school children and the

general public at all times. Guards work

two shifts per day: 7:10 to 8:25 am and 2

to 2:45 pm (some school hours vary). No

weekends or holidays. For information:

Sunshine As we take a break from our busy

schedules to celebrate America’s birthday with

family picnics, barbecues, games, music, and

fireworks, let us pause and remember the special

meaning behind Independence Day. It’s a time

for us to think about the freedoms we enjoy

every day….. the freedoms we sometimes take

for granted. Take a few minutes while enjoying

your Fourth of July holiday and silently thank

the patriots who fought for our freedom many

years ago and those patriots serving in our

armed forces today. Freedom is never free and

we should never take our liberty for granted. Be

proud of your country and proud to be an

American.

We wish you and your loved ones a safe and

happy Fourth of July. Happy Birthday America!

Residents are encouraged proudly fly our

American flag on this special holiday.
