New Mission and Vision
Statements
The Huron Lodge staff focus
group worked diligently to come
up with a new mission and vision
statement for the home. We are
proud to share it with you all now.
Mission Statement: Huron Lodge
is a community that provides a
heartfelt circle of care for
individuals of all ages through
teamwork, compassion and trust.
Vision Statement: Make each
day better than the one before!
Resident Safety
With summer upon us we have
many residents going outside to
enjoy the fresh air. Please
remember to drive slowly when
travelling through the parking lot
and to back up slowly when
leaving. As a reminder to all
residents that go out to the front of
the building, please see the
Central Therapy Room staff to get
a flag for your wheelchair. Help us
keep our residents safe!
Sun Safety
If you are a resident that enjoys
spending time in the sun, please
see a registered staff member for
sun screen.
Memorial Cup Visit
On Wednesday July 5 at 10:00 the
Memorial Cup will be available for
viewing and pictures in the
auditorium. The Windsor Spitfires
are the 2017 Mastercard Memorial
Cup Champions and Huron Lodge
will get an opportunity to take
pictures with Bomber the Mascot
and the Memorial Cup. Residents,
family members and staff are
invited to come down and get a
picture.
Volunteers Needed!
The home is always on the lookout
for volunteers. If you are
interested in sharing your time
with the residents please contact
Mary Carroll at ext. 8276. We
have a wide variety of volunteer
opportunities available.

Ice Cream Days Friday July 14 and Wed. July 26 Beginning at 2:00 pm, vanilla ice cream with a choice of chocolate, butterscotch or strawberry topping, will be served throughout the entire building. This summer’s Ice Cream Days are sponsored by the Huron Lodge Residents’ Council.

Alex Silvester knows the impor-tance of staying active.
Every day for the last four years,Silvester, 79, has grabbed hisweights and done bicep curls.
"I do exercises in the morning allthe time," Silvester said. "I've gota 10-pound weight and I do 1,200every morning. I enj oy doing it and
I think it's beneficial. I don't havebig arms but I've got muscles."
Silvester, along with other resi-dents at Huron Lodge in Windsor,will now be able to enjoy outdoorfitness. Fully accessible outdoorexercise equipment worth $30,000was provided by the City of Wind-sor through its accessibility advi-sory committee, which has iden-tified a number of key projects to

make the municipality more ac-cessible for all.
Windsc/ Mayor Drew Diikenssaid tne city is taking a lead rolein ensuring all residents have ac-cess to amenities that help im-prove their quality of life. Whetheryou're eight years old and going toa neighbourhood park or 108 andliving at Huron Lodge, Diikenssaid it's important to encouragehealthy and active living.
"If you are living at a long-termcare home there's reason for it,"Diikens said. "Your mobility maybe lessened and you may not be asactive as you once were. This helpsencourage and promote active liv-ing and we are happy to do that,especially in an accessible way."
Each piece of the outdoor equip-ment is adaptable so those with orwithout mobility issues can use it.Oskar Rauscher, vice-presidentof the residents' council at HuronLodge, is in a wheelchair. He testedout the equipment and believes it'sa great investment in residents'health. He loves that he can work onhis upper body sitting in his wheel-chair while breathing in fresh air.
"The day it was put out and theylet us go on the concrete I was outhere," he said. "I'm an outdoorperson."
Windsor's first female mayor,Elizabeth Kishkon, is a HuronLodge resident and avid walkerwho was pleased to see the addi-tion of the outdoor equipment.
"I think it's very important, andI think we should all start thinkingabout physical health from a veryearly age right through to old age,"she said. "If you sit around and justwatch television, you age muchfaster and you get sick faster."
The equipment is part of Wind-sor's 20-year strategic plan to im-prove the quality of life for resi-dents.ksteele@postmedia. com
