We appreciate all who took the time to respond to the recent survey. This is your senior center, and it should always reflect the needs and interests of the people who participate. While the responses were overwhelmingly positive, we hope that you also feel comfortable bringing any concerns to staff so that we can continue to improve our programs and services. We receive 56 total responses to the survey. The top reasons why people attend the senior center are: friendships/social connections, education/ information, music, and special events. When asked to describe senior center staff, the responses were “friendly, helpful, caring, courteous, kind, awesome, smart, fun, great.” Thank you! We are all very passionate about doing a great job for our seniors, and it’s a joy to know that you feel it, too.

We had a few verbal requests for the addition of caffeinated coffee and better tasting decaf coffee., so we’ve done that. Two people asked about the 90+ birthday pictures. We now use that wall space to provide information about scams targeting seniors, in hopes of increasing awareness and protecting people from unscrupulous predators, but we’ll look for another spot to hang the picture of the 90+ birthday celebrants after the next 90+ party.

Out of the 56 surveys we received, 3 responded that the director (that’s me) was unfriendly. While some may say it’s a small number, it’s three too many for me to feel good about. I suspect that you caught me in the middle of paying the bills or working on the budget, when my mind is clogged up with numbers, but that is no excuse. I will try harder to be friendly at all times!

As promised, copies of the survey results are available at the front desk. All comments we received have been included in full exactly as written, no editing has been done. Stop by and pick up a copy if you like.

From the Director’s Desk

It’s easy to accumulate stuff over the years. But when does clutter become hazardous? Clutter can make for safety issues in the home. For example, some people save mail or old newspapers. If left on the floor they create a falls risk. Maybe a person doesn’t want to save these papers, but has trouble keeping them from piling up due to a medical condition such as arthritis. Some people let trash pile up because they can no longer take it out themselves. Garbage and old food can cause other safety problems like bugs and mold. There are instances where so much stuff is piled up, there’s not a safe path to walk. This is a safety and a fire hazard! And, it’s not only a problem for the person living in that space, but also for first responders such as the EMT’s or the Fire Department. I recently saw a story of a senior who died in a fire because the fire department was unable to get her out in time because of all her stuff.

Please know that there is help if you or anyone you know may need assistance taking out the garbage or decluttering things you may have accumulated over the years. Let me know if you’d like some resources.

I wear two pairs of pants while golfing in case I get a hole -in- one.

My friend told me a joke about chocolate, it wasn’t that funny but I snickered.

Police were called to a daycare where a toddler was resisting a rest.

The experienced carpenter nailed it, but then the new guy screwed it up.

Health Bits from Nurse Barbara July is here and mosquitoes and other insect pests are in full swing. To deter mosquitoes, get rid of standing water. This includes pet water bowls and even plant saucers. Dump and change bird bath water at least twice a week. Bats usually eat lots of mosquitoes, but the bat population is down due to white nose syndrome. When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks outdoors. Use a repellent on skin and on thin clothing. Ticks are very common in our area and will be even more prolific this year due to so much rain. They have discovered ticks live longer in cooler temperature areas with higher levels of humidity. The infected blacklegged ticks are those that can cause Lyme disease. Symptoms can include a bull’s-eye shaped rash, fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint aches along with swollen lymph nodes. It can usually be treated with antibiotics if caught soon enough. Ways to protect yourself against ticks include avoid brushing up against vegetation. When hiking stay in the middle of the path and they don’t like dry, sunny places. Tuck your pant legs into your socks. Wear a hat and wear light clothing to better identify ticks on your body. The Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services states: Mosquitoes can detect a prospective host from as far away as 100 feet. A common tick can actually detect the footsteps of a potential host and start running towards it within a matter of seconds. Ticks dry out very quickly and can’t attach to a host. Repellents work by blocking their detection systems, (ie.) antennae and other sensory organs.

Friendly Faces

Hello, I’m Becky Losby Case Manager at the Senior

Center. I’ve been here for 5 years, and I love what I

do. I grew up in Madison, but reside in McFarland

with my husband Ryan and our son’s Braden (17)

and Carter (15), yellow lab, Gabby & a shipoo,

Jordy. You may see Jordy around the center once

in a while. I received my associate’s degree in 1995

in human services, and I just recently went back to

school to get my bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Prior to working at the Senior Center I worked

many years at the UW Hospital in various roles,

from nursing assistant in the emergency room to

dispatching Med Flight. I also worked at Four

Winds Manor in social services. I like to fish, boat,

travel (I love Jamaica & was married there) and do

little home fixer upper projects. I start books but

rarely finish them, love extra cheese and

mushroom pizza, shamelessly enjoy 70’s & 80’s

rock, and I’ll never get tired of the movie The

Notebook. I’m reminded everyday how blessed I am

to work with all of you here at the Senior Center.

Hi! My name is Pat Perkins and I am a volunteer at the senior center. I have been involved for many years now, starting first as a receptionist. Then I got involved in the board and joined them for a four year term. From there I moved on to helping out with foot care, serving meals, helping my husband deliver meals on wheels, helping with the health fairs. I am also part of a group who serves popcorn and sets up euchre and prizes every Tuesday afternoon! There is not one thing I do here that I truly don't enjoy doing. When I first started, I basically knew no one! Now I know so many of the seniors who both volunteer here and just come to enjoy all the activities that are available to everyone. I am originally from Lancaster, WI and graduated from there. I met my husband through one of my roommates and we have been married for almost 49 years. We have one son and a daughter-in-law and 2 "grand dogs"! When I was working, I worked for the Dept of Revenue for many years, left when my son was born, then had a job at Sears for 24 years, and several part-time jobs at Verona Electric Appliance and Conney Safety Products. In my spare time I love to quilt! We just recently moved to Belleville but I continue to volunteer here because of the great place to spend time and to see the wonderful people I have come to know and work with. I truly enjoy all the time I spend here.
