July 2017To my wonderful Riverside Presbyterian family,

When I spoke to a seminary friend of mine recently, I told him that I was being installed in June. His response, "About time!" When I started here at RPC on December 15th, we blasted right through the Advent and Christmas season and came upon an early Lenten and Easter season. Hit the floor running! Thankfully, members of the PNC, session, deacons, and all of you were incredibly patient with me as we negotiated through the busy liturgical seasons. Though normally installation services are relatively close to start dates for the clergy, I find they lend themselves to be a little disconnected. The Pastor is just getting to know the congregation and vice versa but in this service, I had the privilege of knowing the sheep of God's pasture here for almost 7 months. We worked through quite a bit in a short period; we weathered together, we bore tears together in memorial services, we laughed, we broke bread, we shared a little more life together than what normally happens with clergy are installed. When stepping up to the

pulpit for the benediction, I was already your Pastor in my heart. The installation was the formalization of that reality.

I thank you from the depths of my being for your welcome, your love for me and my family, for your vulnerability, your candor, your encouragement, your challenge, and your support and presence as we journey together in our calling of Jesus Christ. Thank you for your prayers and your wonderful celebration on a very hot June day at 3PM! Thank you for your hearts of celebration and joyful exuberance! Thank you all for your ministry of welcome and affirmation!

On behalf of my family, we give thanks to the Lord for every one of you! Thank you for making my transition to being your Pastor so welcoming and generous in loving spirit. May the Lord continue to richly bless you!

Your Pastor,

Rev. Michael Hafele

Riverside has hired a new organist!Diana Amtower has over 30 years experience as a church organist and

music director, serving in several different denominations. She states her passion for church music is more than a job and started when she was a

girl going to church each Sunday. Diana and her husband Keith live near the Orange-Brevard County line

and share a love of the beach. Most every weekend will find them spending time enjoying the ocean breeze.

Please introduce yourself to her and make her welcome to Riverside!

Kids Music Camp!A big THANK YOU to all the terrific kids who attended and the wonderful people who helped with our music camp. Our theme this year was “Who is My Neighbor?” We spent the week exploring that since we are made in God's image we must reflect God's love and show that love to everyone.

We had 24 enthusiastic campers who sang their hearts out, were amazing strumming the ukuleles, and super keepers of the beat with the percussion instruments.

Music camp could not have happened without the volunteers. I would like to thank Mike Reed and George Spaeth for teaching the ukulele class, Jodi Boeddeker and Becky Reed for teaching the percussion class, and Tina Adams and Stephanie White for helping me teach the campers the songs and motions.

Heather Hardcastle, Claudia Hafele, Gail Marshall, Andrey Plata and Linda Boehmer were our group leaders. Kathy Coon and her helpers, Judy George, Judy Anderson, and Jackie Hill provided us with nutritious snacks. Kyle Savage, Bob Howard and Nikolas Hafele were our audio/visual wizards. Teri Monteith graciously gave a donation so that we could purchase our ukuleles and OMEC provided our t-shirts. A special thank you to

Pastor Mike for his help and support. It was a wonderful week and I feel blessed to have been part of it. -- Kathie Spaeth

The children of the One Room School House are on Summer Break. Their class will not meet during the months of June, July, and August. Miss Vicki and her group of volunteers will enjoy a break and be refreshed and ready to teach and enjoy the children in September.

When classes resume, the children will explore “Growing in the Grace and Gratitude of God” through the stories of Ruth, Samuel, David, and Jonah. They will walk alongside these Old Testament heroes as they fight giants, struggle with the implications of power, claim God as their own, and extend hospitality to friends and strangers alike. Your children will be inspired to stand courageously for God and in solidarity with others.

Happy Independence Day to All !!!

Rev Pfeiffer retires and is voted Pastor Emeritus

April 19, 1964 Rev. Bray Bosworth preached his first sermon

as the Pastor of Riverside on the subject, “In The Beginning God.”

April 26, 1964 Rev. Bray Bosworth Installed

March 22, 1964 The new sanctuary (Riverside Chapel) was

finished and the first service held, with Rev. Pfeiffer preaching. As it turned out,

Rev. Bosworth preached the last sermon in the old sanctuary and Rev. Pfeiffer preached the

first sermon in the new.

May 17, 1964 The new sanctuary was dedicated at the

11 am worship service with Dr. Charles T. Martz, Synod Executive, preaching.

The year 1964 provided many material “firsts” for Riverside — the first minister’s office

(The minister’s office was in the west wing of Know Hall and Aurilla Birrel served as the first

part-time church secretary.), church office, church secretary, church telephone, church

custodian and the first specially printed Riverside bulletins. The church came into the national spotlight briefly when Rev. Bosworth

gave the benediction at the July 14, 1964, session of the national Republican convention

in San Francisco. As of the end of the year, there were 307 members.
