One hundred fifty years ago, on June 19th, 1865, the slaves of Texas and the remaining slave-holding slaves that were not part of

the Confederacy, were emancipated by Federal order. This became known as the holiday of Juneteenth. On June 17 of this year – just two days before the 150 anniversary of Juneteenth – there was a mas-sacre of worshippers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Our hearts and our souls cry out for the pain of our brothers and sisters in faith who were doing what we do ev-ery week – studying scripture, praying together and giving communal sup-port to one another.

As I watched the news about the murder of their young pastor, Rev. Clementa Pinckney, I couldn’t help but think: “This could have been me; those could have been us.” In Deuteronomy 28:60, the Torah teaches: “God will bring back upon you all the sicknesses of Egypt that you dreaded so, and they shall cling to you.” I believe that the Egyptian disease is the indifference and the “heart-hardening” that Pharaoh had that allowed slavery to persist in their society for centuries. We speak often about how we are commanded to remember that we were slaves in Egypt and this should bring about empathy toward the oth-er. I would say that we have another

We Must Fight against the Diseases of Egypt

F ro m t h e R a bb i ’s S t u d yinstruction: it is not enough to just remember our own enslavement; we must work to never contract the dis-eases of Egypt and become Pharaoh. After the murder by a White supremacist at the JCC last spring, we were all comforted by the support that came in from around the world. It is now our turn to give comfort to those attacked by domestic terrorism. Only giving money to Charleston is not enough. I urge all of us to send notes and letters of support – just as our community received in our time of grief – to let the members of Emanuel AME Church that they are not alone, and we are with them in spirit. To send a note of condolence, Emanuel AME Church’s Address is: 110 Cal-houn St. Charleston, SC 29401.

Thoughts From the HazzanHazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda, Director of Congregational Learning | [email protected]

July is the season of camp, long days at the pool or a lake and hiding from the heat in air-conditioning.

Many of us travel in July, and I will take to the skies in order to visit good friends, family and interesting places. I have always been terrified of flying. Something about the speed, the height of the plane, the feeling that not only am I not in control (which I am not) and that I am not informed of what is happening in the cockpit combine to make me feel uneasy at best, totally panicked at worst. There are two questions I con-sider when I reflect on this situation:

A Traveler's Dilemma 1. Why am I afraid at all, consider-ing I believe in God? 2. What can I do to allay my fears? Now, I put a lot more time into considering the second question, as the first is somewhat irrelevant in the moment. I am afraid, and that is that. Many a co-passenger has challenged me with, “you are clergy - you should be the LEAST afraid person on this plane!” Let me share a secret with you - just because I am clergy does not mean I am not afraid of bad things happening! So on to question 2 - what can I do to feel calm and make it through take-off without breaking into tears?

The answer - I pray. There is a special prayer, t’fillat haderech, the prayer for the road, often called the traveler’s prayer; in this very old prayer of Talmudic origin, the traveler asks for God’s protection from all sorts of pos-sible calamity. Especially comforting to me is the conclusion of the prayer - Baruch Atah Adonai, shome’ah t’fillah - praised are You, God, who hears prayer. The take-home for me is clear - I am human, and therefore, I am going to be fearful sometimes. But God hears my prayer, understands my fears, and is near to me when I bring myself near to God.

Parashat Hashavua Group

The Parashat Hashavua Group meets every third Shabbat of the month in the conference room, at 9:00 am to discuss the

weekly Torah portion. The participants enjoy the deep level of discussion and Kabbalistic insights into the text along with its informal,

welcoming atmosphere. The group will meet on July 18 to discuss Parashat Matot-Masei. For more information, contact Svetlana Sor-kin at [email protected].

Presidential Thoughts

It’s July, so please join me in welcoming the new CBS Board members: Susie Azorsky, Al Beitchman, Bernie Fried, Adam Matsil

and Victor Wishna. In addition please welcome Berenice Haberman to the Board as the new President of the Beth Shalom Sisterhood. We thank our outgoing Board members for their service: Cindy Daniels, Dayna Ger-shon, Kurt Kavanaugh, Sarah Beren, Harryette Cooperman and of course, our out-going Sisterhood President (and Scroll Editor!), Bev Newman. The Board has three major responsibilities which affect all of us. Board members actively engage with the congregation by participating on

committees and attending synagogue events. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility for the budget and the financial health of the congregation. Board members serve as ambassadors to the congregation, so I’ll make a sug-gestion. Since we all do more of what we’re told we do well, find a Board member this summer and tell them what you like about CBS! July means that it is a new fiscal year for Beth Shalom and the start of our fourth year in a row with a bal-anced budget. The Board, reflecting the congregation, decides how to meet our strategic goals and then develops resources to accomplish those goals. As we continue forward in a fiscally responsible way, we look forward to

directing our resources in ways that add vibrancy to the Jewish living at Congregation Beth Shalom. Finally, this summer we will be initiating the process to get congregational feedback on two of our most important senior staff. This month, we all have the op-portunity to provide feedback about our Director of Congregational Learn-ing, Hazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda. In September, we’ll use the same process to ask for your feedback on our Ex-ecutive Director, Elaine Levine. Thank you in advance for your thoughtful feedback.

Thoughts From the Hazzan

If you glance at the July CBS calendar, you will notice that this year Tisha B’Av will be commemorated on the 10th of Av rather than the 9th of Av. Why? This year the 9th of Av falls on a Shabbat, and the only time we fast on a Shabbat is Yom Kippur. Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning to commemorate the destruction of both the first and second Temples, which were both destroyed on the 9th of Av. In modern times we have come to

memorialize other tragedies in Jewish history, some of which have actually occurred on the 9th of Av. The community-wide Tisha B’Av observance, sponsored by the Rabbin-ic Association of Greater Kansas City, will take place on Saturday evening, July 25, in Goldsmith Hall. A Light Seudah Shlishit is at 7:30 pm followed by Minchah at 8:20 pm. Learning with Rabbi Glickman is at 9:00 pm, followed by Ma’ariv, Havdalah and the

Tisha B'Av

reading of Eikhah (Lamentations). This is a meaningful service with beautiful, mournful melodies, some engaging teaching, and a time for communal reflection on both painful times of our past and hope for our future. Services on Sunday morning, July 26, will take place at 8:00 am in Goldsmith Hall, and the fast will end at 9:30 pm in the evening. For more information, contact Annette Fish at [email protected] or 913-327-4622.

In accordance with the bylaws of Congrega-tion Beth Shalom this notice is required to be prominently placed in The

Scroll when the contract of a member

of the professional staff is coming up for renewal. Please be advised that the contract of Hazzan Tahl Ben-Yehuda is now up for renewal. Beth Shalom members may address any comments to Norman Kahn Jr., MD, Congrega-

tion Beth Shalom, President, 14200 Lamar Ave., Overland Park, KS 66223 or email your comments regarding Hazzan Ben-Yehuda to: [email protected]. These comments must be received before Wednesday, August 1.

Summer Activities Miss Judy, Director of the RFE-CEC, has some suggestions for enjoy-ing the rest of summer, which goes by so quickly, with your children and grandchildren:• In the morning slow down a little

and don’t rush everyone out of the house so early in the morning, spend time cuddling in your “jam-mies” and read an extra book.

• Bake muffins and bring some to a relative or friend who needs a visitor. This can become a teaching moment of G’milut Chasadim, acts of loving kindness.

• On a rainy day, let your child build a fort by throwing a blanket over a table and having a pretend camping trip.

• Turn off your lights, give your chil-dren flashlights, let them have fun!

• Pack a picnic lunch and go to a new

park to eat and play!• Hoda’ah is appreciation or an ability

to look around and appreciate the world. Each day encourage your children to tell you something they are thankful for. You do the same and write them in a journal. Look-ing back at the end of the summer, you can see all the things you and your children are grateful for!

• Design a Shutterfly book of pictures about your summer fun, and let your children help you by dictating something about each picture. This will become a favorite book for your children and a wonderful keepsake for you!

• Make dinner together as a family with your children helping you cre-ate the menu, make up the shop-ping list and helping you shop and cook!

Teen alumni of the Rose Family Early Childhood Education Center are volunteering as madrakhim again this summer at our summer camp. These teens are fun and enthusi-astic and radiate high energy. Our kids love and greatly benefit from these Madrakhim.

KCUSY Holds Chapter Membership Training Following are comments from our USYers at CMT, Chapter Mem-bership Training, which was held May 31-June 1: Jacob Flekier created an amazing scavenger hunt out at the Legends. We had “make your own piz-zas” at Pizza Studio and then looked towards the future while watching Tomorrowland. The evening continued back at the Youth Lounge where we heard from the seniors about their time in KCUSY. The only regrets the seniors had were in not being more involved! They

encouraged everyone to really take the time to be active, be leaders and continue the legacy of KCUSY. We inducted the new members, had lots of snacks, lots of great talks, watched a movie, played some basketball, learned about each other and bonded like never before! There was pretty much

no sleep whatsoever, but we were still excited to have Rabbi Glickman join us for breakfast and a post-it program where we delved into what KCUSY means to us, what it means to those around us, and what our dreams are to make it even better! We then went to Schlitterbahn, and although it was

only 60 degrees out-side, we had a blast (somewhat of an arctic blast) doing all of the water rides without any lines! It was freezing, but it was worth it!! We are looking forward to another exceptional year with KCUSY.
