CYC Board HighlightsThe following actions were taken at the Board of

Directors meeting June 18, 2015:l 2015 CYC Annual Meeting has been set for Sat.,

Nov. 14l 2015 CYC Change of Watch will be Sat., Dec. 5.l The Club will be closed August 16-20 for maintenance. The next Board Meeting will be Thurs., July 16.

WOW…the first half of the year 2015 is in the history books. Welcome to July and the beginning of the second stretch. July is always a busy month. Of course, everyone knows about Independence Day, but did you know:

l July was named for Julius Caesar in 44 BC, the month he was bornl the flower of July is the water lilyl the birthstone is the rubyl July is national blueberry month, national ice cream month, national culinary month, national hot dog month, and national grilling monthAlso:l the first adhesive postage stamp was brought to market July 1, 1847l the bikini bathing suit made its debut in Paris in 1946l and the first All Star baseball game was played in Chicago in 1933 (the American League won 4-2)Maybe most important is that July is the birth

month of my wife Kathy. Can you tell I’ve had a lot of

time on my hands while I recover from heart surgery? Yep, boring but very blessed.

Before we embrace July totally let’s review some of the fun events of the past month or so. At the end of May, CYC participated in the City of Clearwater’s Centennial Parade; we had members from all parts of our club participating – great job, members!

RC Proefke and the Entertainment Committee con-tinue to bring us a lot of fun events…can anyone say karaoke? Yachting is busy planning the regattas for the fall and winter events…Cruisers are back from their extended cruise and weekend junkets to St. Pete and other ports of interest. The St. Pete cruise included a Rays game, lots of fun I am sure.

Fleet Captain Skip Moore is completing the dock re-pair list, will be asking for volunteers soon...Father Bob and his Youth Sailing camps are under way and it is great to see so many young folks around the club…VC Cardosi and the House and Grounds team continue to update our aging lady…painting will start soon, fol-lowed by the tenting of the building for termites; you’ll get more info on that in a separate mailing.

July 4th weekend will be fun-packed with the waterslide for the kids, BBQ from Chef John and staff, plus several other surprise activities…Enjoy the pool and lots of fun.

Your club continues to grow, the finances are doing well, the member usage is at a nice level (can always be larger), so if you are part of the fun, Thank You Very Much. Remember we are a member-driven club, so bring your friends and ask them to join.

Have a great July.

all iS well on the docks. All slips are leased. We have some maintenance issues that will be taken care of very soon, so come on down where all the fun is!

How to Love Your WindlassIt’s pretty obvious what you should do above deck

to keep your windlass running smoothly. At least once a year, preferably during spring layup, go ahead and discombobulate the mechanicals and apply waterproof marine grease to the appropriate parts in accordance with your owner’s manual. And what’s more, you should check the oil in the gearbox of the device and add more per instructions if necessary.

But hey, what should you do below deck, where your

are yOu HaViNG ENOUGH FUN? Well, if the answer to this question is a resounding “NO!” then you need to be spending more time at the club and participat-ing in the Yachting events and Race Committee activi-ties. You will have more fun than I think is allowed!

We have a regatta schedule lined up that will guarantee to get you all the FUN you can take. Being out on the water, participating in races and supporting regattas as Race Committee members is what we love to do.

As promised, we will be holding a Race Commit-tee 101 class for those of you who would like to learn about participating in the Race Committee activities. The first class will be held at CYC on Sat., Oct. 3, which is just prior to the start of the fall schedule. A second class will be held in January 2016 just prior to the winter races.

Our fall regatta schedule kicks-off after the Dunedin Boat Club holds its Dunedin Cup Race on Sat., Sept., 26. Our first race will be the Clearwater Challenge which will be a two-day event this year. (Apparently one day of fun was not enough!) This race will be held the weekend of Oct. 31 – Nov. 1, 2015. This is a WFPHRF Gulf Boat of the Year (BOTY) event.

windlass electrics dwell? The answer is simpler than you’d think. After you’ve

cleaned everything off – meaning all the cobwebs, dirt, and detritus – either with rags or, better yet, a ShopVac, spray the motor terminals, footswitch ter-minals, and terminals on the reversing solenoids with a good, aerosol-type rust inhibitor like CRC-3097 Long Life or CRC 6-66. Alternatively, you might also go with a product like WD40 – it’s a bit easier to find around the house perhaps. And as long as you’re riding the rust-inhibiting trail, why not give your battery and iso-lator terminals the same loving treatment?

And one last word of advice. Before you drop the hatch on that seldom-visited anchor locker of yours, you might check the electric motor hugging the overhead – it kindly does all the work, after all. Look for water leaks and intrusions near the motor’s cool-ing ports and deal with those problems immediately. Motor problems, sad to say, are the primary reason anchor windlasses fail when they are desperately needed.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Congratulations to CYC PC Tim Roberts and his Endeavor 35 Chances R, which took Third Place in the Cruising Division of the 2014-15 season for Gulf Boat of the Year.

If you are looking for more FUN on the water, check out our full schedule for the upcoming season:

And just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more FUN, don’t forget the Beer Can Races sched-uled for this month. We will have two races in July:

Saturday, July 11th at 1:30pmSunday, July 26th at 2:30pm

So, if you have a boat, bring it. And if you don’t, just show up and crew on someone else’s. Please contact Tish Wold if you would like to be included on her Beer Can email list.

You are FUN people and we need your help! So, I would like to encourage everyone to attend the Yachting Commit-tee meetings. The Yachting Committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month, but always the Tuesday before the Board meeting. So, come and join in the FUN!

I look forward to seeing you at the Club and on the water!

SeSSiON ONe of our 2015 Youth Summer Sailing Camp is off to a great start with a full enrollment of Intrepid Sailors, Adult Volunteers, Junior/Youth Leaders, and supportive parents! Monday morning, June 8th, we were warmly welcomed

First Day with Engine 27 & Crew re: safety

to Calvary Episcopal Church Indian Rocks Beach by Father Jon Roberts. On hand to teach us some important safety lessons were the duty crew of Engine 27 from Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue, and they have continued to check up on us almost every day! Following some important classroom time, our kids were all out on the water by Tuesday afternoon and they have been under sail ever since. At Compass press time, week two and graduation were just wrapping up and the boats were being moved to Clearwater Yacht Club for Sessions Two and Three. Following a two week summer break for our staff, we will begin again on Monday, July 13th and conclude Friday, August 8th. We are off to a great start and looking forward to wonderful days to come.

OuR FRiDAY nighT entertain-ment is shuffling some. Kaleidoscope will be back playing on the fourth Fridays in July, August and September. Also, a new band, Genesis, will be playing the third Fridays in July, August and September. Genesis substituted for the Music Makers

back in May and the membership enjoyed their music.

Karaoke was back on June 20th

to a packed house. We plan to keep karaoke on a quarterly schedule.

Plan to be at the club over

the 4th of July weekend. We will have the water slide on site again and it should be a fun weekend.

July 18th will bring the annual Dinghy Poker Run to the waters of Clearwater Harbor. Clean up those water guns and get ready for a fun day.

August 15th, the Satur-day prior to the club’s brief maintenance shutdown,

we are having a Hurricane Party, so plan to come have some fun and see what Chef John digs out of the freezer. The power might be out, but hopefully we will still have gas to cook on.

Be careful in the sun – it’s hot out there. Many of us have a clear vision of our retirement years. Yet, a

surprising number of people have no idea how they’ll turn that

vision into reality. The fact is today’s retirement takes more

than savings and Social Security. It requires a financial plan

that addresses your needs, wants and how you’ll pay for them.

That’s where I can help. Together, we’ll create a plan to help

fund the retirement you envision. LIFE WELL PLANNED.

GET THE RETIREMENT YOU WANT.

It’s never too soon to start planning.

JunE, OFFiCiAllY is the start of summer, and maybe this had something to do with the unusually hot weather here. Believe me, it wasn’t that hot on the Big Horn River in Montana where I recently took a nine-day vaca-tion. I’d love to tell you about the trip and how many trout I caught – my new title might be “fisherman extraordinaire.”

I am sure you have noticed the new construction going on at CYC’s entrances. We are adding a new look to these areas with the new handrails and soon a new coat of paint on the building and roof. The main-entry circular window is installed, with new stained glass artwork to be added soon.

MARK your calendars for Aug. 16-20 when the club will be closed for tenting. We have some new members (termites) that have moved in and we are going to exter-minate them. The good news, if you allow me to call it that, is that we have dry wood termites that have caused little to no damage to our clubhouse. We expect to be closed about four days. Tom will announce the opening

date with a fun party and a food special.Chef John continues to knock it out of the park with

food specials. The Latin dock party was well attended and the Latin fare food was awesome! Danielle’s service staff provided great service and was very attentive to mem-bers’ needs. Good job service team!!

I know you have heard this before, but be sure to fill out the comment card and let us know how much you enjoy the food and drink service and suggestions on other things you would like to see our club provide. Rear Commodore Ed Proefke also attends the House and Grounds meetings, so it’s a direct pipeline to him as well as me through the comment cards.

As always, I look forward to seeing you around the club soon and often.

Gulls TracksBy Joyce Jenkyngulls President

THe GullS are looking for ladies who would like to get more involved. Our Board elections are coming up in October, and we need ladies who would be willing to put in some time each month as Gulls secretary, treasurer, vice president or president. There are also several commit-tees that will need a volunteer chairperson – Communica-tions, History, Membership, Sunshine and Hospitality. I’m hoping that Connie Boblenz will remain the Chair for the Boatique!

Think about it, and if you’re interested in being more involved, please let me know. We already have one vol-unteer for the treasurer position, but need members for the other positions as well. Our current elected officers have each spent two years in their present position, plus time in other Board positions, so we are looking for a break!

Don’t forget – just because we don’t have any formal

Board meetings or luncheons during the summer, we still gather every Wednesday morning for conversation, games and lunch. Join us in the Gulls Nest any Wednesday at 10:30 – or maybe 10:45? (We aren’t always on time in the summer…)

Have you had a good look at the finished Memorial

Garden retaining wall? It looks great – and was paid for by the Gulls from funds collected for dues, Boatique sales, our biennial Yard Sale on the Dock, and 50/50 drawing proceeds. We do quite a bit for the club, so if you aren’t a Gull – why not? Virginia has Gulls applications in the office, and there are forms in my folder in the office, as well.

Since so many of our ladies are staying in the cooler

areas through September and into October each year, there won’t be a September luncheon this year. The first Gulls-sponsored luncheon program for the fall season will be held on October 28th. If you have an idea for the theme, let us know!

The Gulls’ major event each year is our November

Boatique and Fashion Show. This year, on November 11th, we are including a section called Bobbles, Bangles & Beads for gently worn jewelry. Ladies AND gents, take a look in your jewelry cases and pick out some of that nice costume jewelry that you just never wear. Set aside some of those lovely pieces and donate them to the Gulls

in October for the November Boatique. We’d rather not start collecting jewelry now – it’s still months away – this is just a “heads up” about what is planned. We will start collecting items in October, with an October 28th deadline. Then you can go shopping at the Boatique to replace your donated jewelry with some “new” items!! As always, all proceeds from the Boatique will go into the next Gulls gift to our great CYC!

Saturday, March 5, 2016 will be the Gulls’ biennial Yard

Sale on the Dock that includes household items – no cloth-ing – donated by CYC members. Anyone can attend the sale. If you have furniture, books, games, toys, purses, boat accessories, etc., to donate, we’ll start collecting on Febru-ary 1st. We also need to borrow a lockable trailer to store the items in during February and mid March. Leftover items go to local charities.

We hope to see everyone soon. Where did all this August weather come from?? Whew! Keep cool everyone!

Our Trip TO St. Petersburg Yacht Club was one of the largest showings of Cruisers ever, with 15 boats cruising and numerous other club members coming by car. We had a great Friday docktail party with interaction and camaraderie between CYC and St. Pete club members.

Although the rains came it did not stop us from en-joying our dinners inside the club on Friday. Saturday brought a day of diverse activities with everyone en-joying what the great city of St. Pete has to offer. We ended the day with a very nice dinner at the new Sun Dial Sea Salt restaurant and watched the Lightning game. Sunday was baseball and brunch that included Tampa Bay caps, a complementary drink and a trol-

ley ride to the stadium. Hooray! The Rays beat the Chicago White Sox!

Monday the weather gods provided a beautiful travel day for our return home. Thanks to Connie and Merle Steele for hosting the cruise.

FOuRTh OF JulY is here! As many of you know, this is far and away my favorite day of the year! We throw a big party for everyone, young and not-so-young alike. We’ll have the waterslide in the pool area Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well! During the day we’ll have a fun cook-out from noon to 3 p.m., with the games starting around 2 p.m. If you haven’t had a chance to watch these, you’re in for a treat! Everyone enjoys watching the egg toss, t-shirt races in the pool, water balloon toss, pie eat-ing contest (no hands allowed!), and the coin toss in the pool.

The second cookout, our “Great American Buffet,” will be served 5-8 p.m. Once it’s dark, members will go out on the docks and watch the city

fireworks – the City of Clearwater always puts on an amazing display, and you’ll have front row seating for the show.

And after that marvel, you’re welcome to take a short walk – and I mean short, it’s literally across the street – to join us for a close, upfront fireworks display on the beach. Talk about being part of the action...you’ll be right under it, literally!

The Annual Dinghy Poker Run will

be held this year on Sat., July 18! If you haven’t participated before, you really should make plans to spend the day with us – it’s a blast! If you don’t have a dinghy, you can still get on the water aboard one of the support boats.

You’ll travel by water to five differ-ent destinations, collecting a poker

card at each location. Once we re-turn to the club, we’ll post the cards and see who won! We’ll have raffle prizes galore – from hotel stays to restaurant gift certificates to spa treatments to boat rides! The entry fee includes a fabulous dockside cookout as well.

If you’re interested, please email Terry Williams at [email protected] to get signed up for the Dinghy Poker Run. And plan on bringing your best water pistols so you won’t be defenseless!

Lastly, we’ll have more dock parties

over the summer months, so keep an eye out for all the fun we have planned – your attendance is what makes this fine ship navigate! Check the calendar, read your emails and plan ahead!

At your service, I remain,Tom
