The Deck at River Twist; growing in to a year round destinationBy Louis Money

The only thing Wade Gabel knew about the bar business before he opened

The Deck at River Twist was drinking. A local of Jamestown, who went to Ragsdale High School, Gabel was in corporate sales before making a leap of faith into the bar business. “I always thought it would be cool to own a sports bar,” says Gabel, “but the market was full of sports bars.” So, even though you can catch the game at The Deck, it is no sports bar. It is, however, the most interesting laid out live music venue in the area. The Deck at River Twist is located at a unique building that has been everything from an Italian restaurant, a filling station, and even a firehouse. The Deck has a very interesting décor that goes well with the building’s motif. A quick walk around the property shows many pieces of artwork and antiques, as well as an outdoor stage, an Astroturf dance floor, and open-air bars. For years, The Deck has been primarily an outdoor venue, but now boasts a new indoor bar in the front area of the building. One thing I do not like about a lot of music venues is there is actually no place to talk without screaming. Well, The Deck also has a little trail that leads to a waterfall and koi pond, perfect for quiet socializing. Even though The Deck does not serve food, they are partners with Sid Willis Café and Catering, who are located on the same property and will deliver food to The Deck. days a week. He would like to try corn hole tournaments on Sunday if he could find the right person to run it. He also wants you to know that The Deck at River Twist has a very friendly, safe, and mature feel to it and wants to be an alternative to downtown Greensboro on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Legendary Drifters will be stopping by The Deck on July 4th and the list goes on and on. Basically, the point I am trying to make is that there is a lot going on in Jamestown--mostly at The Deck at River Twist, and mostly from a guy who still knows how to drink at a bar.

We talked some more before I decided to write this article.

Some people network looking for an opportunity, a prospect, a deal or maybe a job. I stopped doing this years ago.

As I network at events I’ve experienced people searching for a quick sales opportunity, asking to be introduced to my network before we know each other or giving me 4-5 business cards to hand out to others when I can. I won’t participate in this.

I network to create connections and build relationships. All that other stuff, where appropriate, happens afterwards.

Ask any Successful Networking Professional who has long term clients, a good pipeline and enjoys their job, and you’ll find they do the same, they “Network for Mutual Benefit.”

Here are the Top 10 traits of a Successful Networking Professional:1. They know networking is all about creating connections and building relationships, not selling.2. They start every conversation with a question about the other person.3. They know nurturing relationships is how you expand your network and discover new opportunities.4. Learning about the other person is priority number one to them.5. They know giving with no expectations is a powerful way to build relationships and relationships are needed to discover opportunities.6. Meeting people who are nothing like them is a great way to make their network diverse and dynamic.7. They know they can’t ask for anything until they get permission, and permission happens when you focus on the other person first.8. They reach out to the people from their past to reconnect and rebuild their relationships where relevant and possible.9. Meeting just a few new people at an event has proven to be a better use of time.10. Following up and continuing to learn about

their network is how they have found some of their best connections and opportunities.

Bonus Trait - When they can, Successful Networking Professionals will work to make an In Real Life (IRL) connection also a Social Media connection and vice versa.

Successful Networking Professionals have learned networking is not about selling. They have discovered it’s about making new connections, building new relationships and helping others so that you become a trusted and respected resource.

Successful Networking Professionals know their network is one of the most valuable assets they have. They will never use their network inappropriately or squander it’s value away for any reason.

They have learned that when they focus on creating relationships, their network will work for them by connecting them to even more people.
