The real challenge of the moon landing: 21 days in this cramped 'recreational

vehicle' with five people

It's 'just' 44 years ago, but it looks like a Jules Verne design

Looking back it's amazing how old fashioned the quarantine bay on board of the marine ship

Hornet looked.

Nixon welcomed the crew saying "As a result of what you've done, the world has never been

closer together before."

Wiki says: he Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF) is a converted Airstream trailer used by

NASA to quarantine astronauts returning from Apollo lunar missions. Its purpose was to

prevent the spread of any contagions from the moon, though the existence of such contagions

was considered unlikely. It functioned by maintaining a lower pressure inside and filtering any

air vented.

The MQF contained living and sleeping facilities as well as communications which the

astronauts used to converse with their families. The Apollo 11 crew also used this to speak

with President Nixon who personally welcomed them back to Earth aboard the recovery ship

after splashdown.

The trailers housed the three crew as well as a doctor and an assistant for cleaning and

cooking.

Going to the moon is one thing but being locked up for three weeks in this trailer is

something only real heroes survive

Faces showing disgust, despair, deeply ashamed and a few defiant, but note the future

historian to the far right.

The hope behind these confrontations was that it would trigger change; later described in a

book called 'Exorcising Hitler: The Occupation and Denazification of Germany'.

A failed attempt as confronting people who often didn't have part in the cruelties only led to

shame and an unwillingness to look back at the past. Only when the Germans got their heads

up and historians made Hitler a human again, the nation could get forward and really discuss

history. Maybe that man to the right already understood what it would take.

A zillion *nixes drove you away from the server market, but you survived as everybody's best

friend on the desktop. Your death is expected, iOS is close to outselling you, Android circles

around you, but for those who need performance you're still the old friend.

Luckily little nephew Windows RT failed to steal your throne and that hyped-up Apple version

of Unix couldn't get you out of business.

Maybe that simple mind Chrome will be the heir to your throne. Maybe one of the *nix flavors

will succeed in convincing consumers that they are ready to step in to your light. Maybe your

heritage is just lost and the grand operating system powering servers and desktops is put to

bed and replaced by smartened up browsers.

Whatever the future might bring: like Mick Jagger your greatest hits were in the past, but they

defined a period and we had a good time together. Hats off to you sir!
