The Master's Chair Greetings

Well my time is up and as many Installing Masters recite "there is a time to come

and a time to go and your time has come and it's time to go!".

Having obligated the Master-elect, WBro Graeme J D Hay at our June meeting, we

now prepare for his Installation, at our July 16th meeting, by the Deputy Grand

Master, RWBro H Benedykt, assisted by members of the 2013 Grand Ceremonial

Team.

As I look back on the year there are many things to be grateful for; the support and

cooperation I have received from the Officers of the Lodge as well as our members.

Together we have seen five young men take their first steps and in four cases their

second steps in our wonderful Fraternity. Two have taken their third step and I was

especially privileged to have Bro Tony Doumit take that third step after a long

absence from the Lodge, during which time he has undertaken studies that

demanded all of his attention.

Regrettably there has been some downsides as well, with several members passing

to the Grand Lodge above. However for me, the worst of then all was WBro de

Page 6: July 2013

Rochefort's resignation first as Secretary and now as a member of the Lodge.

Despite the efforts of many to resolve his differences we were singular unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, we wish him well at his new home and thank him for his contribution

to the Lodge, including his time as Master.

A real highpoint for me during the year has been the enthusiasm of our younger

members in attending the Centre on a number of weekends to learn more about the

craft and what is required of them. Answering their questions has required several

of us to do more research to find the correct response. I have been assisted in that

area by completing a "Certificate of Masonic Studies" conducted for Grand Lodge by

the Victorian Lodge of Research. I understand that another course may be

conducted at our centre in 2014 and I strongly recommend it to those - young and

old - who seek to know more about our wonderful institution. My only regret is that

I did the course some 46 years after my initiation! Had it been available earlier I

feel that my absence from the fraternity would have been for far less time than it

ultimately was!!!!

Finally, it would be remiss of me not to say a special word about the wonderful

Ladies who give up their time every Lodge meeting to prepare the Banquet Room

for us. To you Dulcie, Jenny, Val and Eileen your contribution deserves our

gratitude and sincere appreciation. Thank you!

Thank you again for the honour and privilege of being Worshipful Master of this

great Lodge. Go safely and may your health and days be all that you wish!

Fraternally

Nick

Edition No 120 - Tuesday 16th July 2013 "Hallo" Dear Friends,

Just a short note to endeavour to keep all informed with the happenings of your Lodge; and plenty of happenings there are!

Tuesday the 18th June we saw the organisation of our Lodge in top gear with a mountain of business to work through - well done to all concerned. The election of Officers to the working committees, the Treasurer, Tyler and auditors etc - sensibly carried out! Subscriptions increase 2013-2014 outlined in the June Lodge Summons along with the various membership categories was passed unanimously - to keep all informed is the answer. Well done to all concerned.

Tuesday 18th June was our Worshipful Master's "Last Night" - but typically a busy busy working night was Nick's answer to have a sound basis for the next Worshipful Master to commence his year. By the way, we had 27 visitors - just some measure of respect in which our Worshipful Master is held in the District. His dynamic energy and enthusiasm has been an ideal - indeed revitalising interest in masonry in lodge circles as well as the community. Thank you WBro Nick - so inadequate but most sincere!

Congratulations to: Bro Colin Kirwan and Bro Eric Brown who took their

second step in the Craft - particularly the manner in which they presented themselves to be passed to the 2nd Degree.

WBro Graeme Hay who was obligated as "Master-elect" in preparation for his Installation, by the Deputy Grand Master RWBro H Benedykt assisted by a Grand Ceremonial Team, at our next meeting and a busy year ahead.

VWBro Colin Scharp and his "Team" who carried out the Ceremonial of the 2nd Degree (the old blokes have still got "it" whatever "it" is).

RWBro Ron de Lisle who was presented with his 60 year service jewel by the WM. Ron didn't want a fuss (public presentation) but we would be remiss if we didn't recognize 60 years of dedicated, conscientious service to the Craft - remembering not only Ron but his family have all made some sacrifices as well as gaining lots of enjoyment to enable this milestone to be achieved. Giving pleasure brings its own reward. Well done our worthy Brother!

The South was a little different. Hot soup, finger food - members standing around laden tables allowing movement around the tables (integration is the word for all present). The speeches were humorous - extolling our retiring WM's virtues (we know that) - and that of the Federation Past Mast Master's Group, who were very well represented.

Well done to all - particularly our caterer WBro Kevin Sloan.

A great evening had by all!

On Sunday 23rd June some 70 members and partners of various Lodges sat down for a very good "Presentation lunch" to welcome our Worshipful Master elect, Graeme Hay and wife Claire. All in all a very nice day with plenty of conversation and smiles to be heard and seen.

The next Social activity is "Christmas in July" at the Yarra

Valley Country Club on Sunday 21st July - 1200 for 1230. Cost is $20 per person. Bookings to Yvonne or Colin 97274328.

The "Sausage Sizzle team" conducted another successful day at Bunnings Coburg. While the cold weather saw a drop in soft drink sales there was a small increase in the number of sausages sold.

With some time on his hands Knut Ratezburg joined us for the day (in pplace of graeme Hay who was still en route from Perth) and by the end of his shift had been "checked to line" as a "server"! Mike Rich, the "Chef" for the last shift kept up his average by having only one cooked sausage unsold when we packed up for the day.

For June we were allocated two days so the 28th June will find us again outside the door of Bunnings Coburg. Even if you can't spare the time to join the team why not call in and buy a sausage or two!!! Proceeds will be assisting the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in their pro-bono community care of animals needing veterinary treatment.

June is the month when the donations to our nominated Charity and Community groups are presented to the recipients. This year our donations have been increased by a further $6,200 following acceptance of our submissions by the Freemasons Public Charitable Foundation (previously administered by the Grand Lodge Board of Benevolence). A very commendable achievement for the Lodge and I'm sure very much appreciated by the recipients.

The Charity and Community Support Committee will now

switch its focus to identifying new community groups or organisations that are in need of assistance. If you know of one, let me know and I'll present it to the Committee for consideration.

Fraternally

Brunswick Centre Market On Saturday 20th July the Lodge will be hosting, on behalf of the Centre's Board of Management, a Market! The "Flyer" for the Market provides details of the variety of goods that will be available from some 23 stalls - all inside the Centre though (weather permitting) a "jumping castle" and face painting will be positioned in the car park. The Lodge Social Committee will be selling hot soup and crusty

bread - which should be the ideal treat for a cold winter's day. If the weather is nice, there may even be a sausage sizzle in the car park.

The proceeds from the hire of the stalls will assist the Centre to avoid rent increases while also enabling further improvements to be carried out during the next 12 months.

But to make it successful - and perhaps pave the way for similar markets in the future - we need your support, not just that of the local community. So come on down, bring some friends and see what goodies you can purchase; there will surely be some great bargains!! The market also provides an opportunity to "advertise" our great fraternity. The Lodge Room foyer will have a Masonic display, manned by Lodge members, including the Grand Lodge mannequins. Hopefully some visitors may become interested in joining us! Hope to see you there Nick

Call for Cameras Do you own an old film camera that you're not using any longer? Brother Peter Sackett is looking for film cameras of all types-- 35mm, 120mm, 4x5, Polaroid, etc. He'd be delighted to see what sort of equipment you've had stored away, collecting dust in this digital age. Please call him at 0459 317 532, email him at [email protected], or bring your cameras to the Brunswick Masonic Centre. Your cameras will be cherished and put to good use! And, depending on the type and model, he may be able to offer you some compensation for the adoption.
