SDPB Magazine is available to be delivered via email each month if you prefer. You’ll receive it a few days earlier and help Friends of SDPB control costs. Ticket holders filter into the Antiques Roadshow set during a Minneapolis event.

Roadshow Takes OverAntiques Roadshow will be the big draw in Rapid City

this month. The PBS classic holds its first-ever appraisal event in South Dakota on Saturday, July 14.

Everyone who was lucky enough to get tickets, via the random drawing or as a thank you for contributions to Friends of SDPB, will head for the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Each of the 7,000 or so who have tickets will bring two items for the experts. Of those thousands of appraisals, fewer than 50 will eventually end up featured on Antiques Roadshow.

For the thousands who didn’t get tickets (there were about three times as many requests as tickets), we’ll give you an insider’s look at the event by taping the set-up and appraisal event for a future SDPB Television special. Then, in 2013, sometime in the winter or spring, you’ll have a chance to tune into three Antiques Roadshow programs featuring the Rapid City event.

Antiques Roadshow airs on SDPB1 Television on Mondays at 7pm (6 MT) and Sundays at 6pm (5 MT). Antiques Roadshow is sponsored by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Subaru. Additional funding is provided by public television viewers. Antiques Roadshow is produced for PBS by WGBH Boston. Executive producer is Marsha Bemko.

Local sponsors for the appraisal event include Black Hills Community Bank, Deadwood History, Inc. (Adams Museum & House, Days of ‘76 Museum and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center), and Reptile Gardens.

SDPB1 Thursday, July 5, 8pm (7 MT) Sunday, July 8, 3pm (2 MT)

Saddle up! Riding, roping and excitement are on the schedule as SDPB Television presents the 2012 South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals.

Young athletes from across the state show off their skills in a two-hour highlights program taped during the annual state competition in Belle Fourche in June. Brad Debeer, a Brookings-area radio host and former high school coach, and Allan Odden, longtime South Dakota auctioneer and rodeo announcer, provide the commentary.

The SDPB Television special presents highlights of the rodeo competition, including the top 16 in Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Goat Tying, Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Break Away Roping, Tie Down Roping, Team Roping, Bull Riding, Boys Cutting and Girls Cutting. In addition, the program will offer interviews with saddle winners, queens, rookie cowgirl and cowboy, and all-around cowgirl and cowboy.

Each year, South Dakota’s best young cowboys and cowgirls show off their skills for a chance to compete in the national finals. The contestants are all under age 20. To qualify they must have just successfully completed 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in high

school. Students qualify for the state finals by earning points at regional meets.

Tune in and lasso some fun. The program may be purchased at Shop SDPB (click on “Shop” in the top menu at SDPB.org).

Your Support Makes SDPB Possible

Bob Bosse, Director of SDPB Television, asks viewers to support Friends of SDPB.

Thank you for your support during the June SDPB Television membership drive. We heard from 388 viewers and 234 of those became new members of the Friends of SDPB.

The drive was a great success with a local program – Over South Dakota – and a national one – Antiques Roadshow – leading the way.

Individuals, organizations and businesses helped with the drive. Thanks to Michelle Van Maanen for volunteering as on-air talent. The Lions Club of Vermillion, the Eagles Club of Vermillion and the Yankton Kiwanis Club provided phone volunteers. Walmart and Domino’s Pizza provided food and snacks.

You did their part, too, pledging more than $57,000 in support of entertaining, educational television programming for South Dakota.

Thank you. Vermillion Lions Club members take calls from Friends of SDPB supporters.

Thank You for Memorial Gifts to Friends of SDPBThe Friends of SDPB has received several

special gifts. Thank you.Two people presented gifts in memory of

Lila Miles – Quentin Miles of Watertown and Patricia Fey of Clark.

Ida Kavafian of New Fairfield, Conn., made a special gift in memory of Edna Kunz of Hermosa.

Kari Nolte of Castlewood remembered two people with gifts – Margaret Gerhold of Castlewood and McKenzie Heemeyer of Castlewood.

The Friends of SDPB is grateful for special gifts. You may give gifts in memory, to commemorate a special person or occasion, or for other reasons.

The Friends of SDPB is happy to accept:• Checks or money orders.• Gifts of property or stock.• Estate or financial planning gifts. For details on special gifts, call the

Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789.Thank you.

MidCo Foundation Supports Missouri River DocChallenging Waters, SDPB’s

look back on Missouri River management and last year’s flooding, returns to SDPB1 Television for an encore in July, on Sunday, July 8, at 1pm (Noon MT).

The one-hour documentary was made with the support of the Midcontinent Media Foundation.

Challenging Waters looks at last year’s flood and the history of the uses and

management of the Missouri River in South Dakota from pre-settlement through the present day. The documentary includes the development of the reservoir

system and the master manual that dictates how managers are supposed to control of the river’s flow.

For more information on supporting SDPB programs and projects, contact Ryan Howlett at 800-456-0556.
