binding. They want to be free of such con-straints. They might be surprised that the Bible agrees with them. As followers of

Christ we are called to be free. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Jesus wants us to live as free people

and He accomplished our liberation by dying and rising again. Christ sets us free from the failures of our past and present, and from the fears of our present and future. Yet sometimes we do not feel free from our failures when we are weighed down with guilt. Or free from our fears when we are worried and afraid. If Christ has set us free, why do we not feel free? Well the second part of verse one tells us that it is possible for us to let ourselves be burdened by a yoke of slavery. What we need is our own personal Declaration of Independ-

The Month of July is marked by Independence Day: July 4th. It is of course the day we celebrate the birth of our coun-try and the gift of freedom. The document that started it all was signed on July 4, 1776. That document, now housed in the National Archives in Washington DC, is called the "Declaration of Independence". In some ways it is the document that makes us Americans. Similarly there is a statement for Christ followers that makes us Christians. The Christian Declaration of Independence is found in the words of the Apostle Paul recorded in Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then in freedom and do not let yourselves be bur-dened again by a yoke of slavery. Some see all religions, including Christianity, as restrictive and

Watch Out for Out of Bounds! The Christian life is a lot like the terrain at Jackson Hole—dangerous and steep with life-threatening hazards blocked by off-limit signs and yellow tape. Yes, there's plenty of room to run in the Christian life. But there are hazard-ous areas to avoid if we don't want to get hurt. Our flesh calls out to us to swerve toward those entic-ing out-of-bounds runs. It wants nothing more than to hurtle us over a cliff and end our witness. Get it straight now. The most discontent man around is the one who's still wrestling with his flesh. If you're standing on the prec-ipice of an out-of-bounds run—or if you are already heading down one—you're discontented to the max. Sin has gotten the best of you, and you are in for more than a thrilling ride. You're in for death! In Galatians 5, Paul says that we either go the way of the flesh or we go the way of the

Spirit. He doesn't mean they are equal forces in a man's life, but he does say it's a choice each of us has to make: spiritual death or spiritual life. So stay in bounds. Go the way of the Spirit.

There is plenty of adventure on that path. One of the common misunderstandings about the Christian life is that it is boring and Christians just don't know how to have fun. Who are we kidding? The Spirit of God offers a different way down the mountain. It's still plenty steep—but it leads to unending joy. SUMMER is a perfect time to spread a little SUNSHINE. We go through some sad times, times of anxiety, times of loneliness, as well as hap-py times and times of celebration. These are all a part of life. Through little acts of kindness, we can bring encouragement and assure others of God's love. We at Christ Community Church can put our "faith in action". Would you like to make someone's world a BRIGHTER place? This SUMMER, the Care Ministry is coor-dinating the baking, packing, and delivery of small bags of home-baked cookies to be distributed during the month of July.

The team gathered and began discuss-ing the plan. Never did I hear any doubt or questioning whether this venture would work, only focused discussion on

the particulars of this our first Chili Cook-off: where to set up, what equipment was needed, games to provide for the kids. I hadn’t been a primary lead before, and I kept my thoughts quiet, fears that this was not going to work, while I road on the wings of the others’ confidence. The first Sunday of sign-ups for chili cookers came . . . 7 in all! Encouraged, but we were still in need of so many more! I knew so much was out of my control from contestant sign-ups to those who would actu-ally attend, but my only hope was offering this event up believing that our intentions were right: raising funds to get as many kids as pos-sible to attend camp to experience the life changing power that is unparalleled to any

other. Of course the added benefit was church fellowship and outreach to our com-munity. So much potential from one event! Soon the Ministry Fair came and contestant sign-ups brought the count up to 17! Then it seemed the event took on a life of its own. Excitement began to generate about: which recipes to use, what to name the team, how to decorate the booth, what should the team attire look like. What a pleasure to wit-

ness! Three more sign-ups came in within the last four days (2 from the community!) putting the total contestant count at 20! But we had planned for 18 . . . a problem we were glad to deal with. Event day has now come and gone, and as we ride in the wake of a great chili cook-off, notes have

been taken from the many surveys received (thank you for the helpful input!) and from our own observations. We learned a lot, and I am grateful for so much: an optimistic co-leader (Sue French), great team members (Sam Bart-lett, Desiere Hernandez, Mike Stone, Ray French, Roger Nixon), willing contestants, a

Club BASIC & ALIEN Forces Combined Movie Night We will be watching 'Batteries Not Included' and of course have lots & lots of popcorn! When: Tuesday, July 17th from 6 - 8pm For: 5th thru 8th grade in the Barracks.

Celebration Sunday Water Fun Day Wear your bathing suit under your clothes and bring a towel. Church starts in The Barracks @ 10:15am. After Church we will eat lunch together (bring your lunch or buy lunch for $2) and then play some fun water games on the back grass area until 1:30pm. When: Sunday, July 22nd For: 5th thru 8th grade.

Week of Hope Week of Hope is a 5-day mission trip where youth focus on building friend-ships and meaningful connections as they serve the needs of people through local ministries and non-profit organizations. The theme this year is 'Made'. Students will be challenged to embrace how Jesus is making every-thing new in their life - the good, the bad, and everything in between - and also how He will be using them to do the same in the world around them. It will be a time to reorient their relationship with Jesus and discover who God made them to be. When: Sunday, July 29th—Friday, Aug. 3rd For: All kids entering 7th—9th grade in Aug Cost: $248/ea.

There is a lot going on, so help is needed. Currently, we have 13 kids reg-istered for Alpine and 10 kids registered for Week of Hope, if you’re help in one of these areas:

1. Drivers and helpers for COP's 2. Drivers to get the kids to & from Alpine Indian Village Camp 3. Drivers to get the kids to & from Week of Hope.

Sponsorships are still needed and being accepted. Any amount you feel led to contribute will be greatly appreciated. Camps impact a students life in so many ways and the experience is bound to be life-altering. Donations can be noted with Alpine/WOH or PT/JH. Messages this past month have included studies on the Five Solas of the reformation, representing five basic principles of the reformers beliefs, lead by Riley Bowers. Lessons on the responsibilities of being a Christian and a study of I Thessalonians: 5, 12-28, lead by Raymond Castillo.

We were delighted with the turn-out at VBX (5th through 8th grade) last week. 35 kids attended, many of them new to our campus! Thank you for all your prayers leading up and through the week. Please continue to pray for these kids as we welcome them to join our Club B.A.S.I.C. and A.L.I.E.N. Forces programs! What an exciting time and a great out-reach opportunity this week was for our community!

High School Ministry Kevin Woolums The high school ministry is off and running for our sum-mer of relationships; that is: consecutive series and dis-cussions about dating, God-ly character, and having the best life possible. As you can imagine, a series about such things has stirred some great conver-sations and very significant life changes. I am currently getting our final paperwork in for our HM summer camp and we will be back just in time for July. I’d like to thank all of you that gave at both the chili cook-off and car wash fundraisers! It was a great way for our youth to be a part of our church as a whole.

Multiple Grade Activities Alpine Indian Village Camp The theme this year is Shine'. Through fun and interactive teaching sessions, crafts, activities, singing, skits, campfires, and more, kids will learn about how God calls us to let our 'Light Shine'! Kids will be gone July 29—Aug 3. Please pray that they have a safe week and draw closer to God in the beautiful mountains by Lake Arrowhead.

COP's (Community Outreach Projects) This is an opportunity for our kids to make a difference in their community through their generosity and hard work. It's like a mission trip without leaving town! The schedule is as follows: Thursday, July 19th 10am - 5pm Friday, July 20th 10am - 9pm Saturday, July 21st 9am - 3pm (Soak City $15 - must attend Thurs. & Fri. to be eligible to go to Soak City)

VBS was a huge success! We had 60 kids attend, (3 years to 4th grade) offering a total of 15 new families to CCC. In "Praise" VBS, we learned about God’s authority, greatness, providence, and power

through inspiring songs, entertaining crafts, energizing games, and insightful Bible time. Sincere thank-you’s to all our leaders and helpers who made the week possible. Your love and kindness to the kids and their families was a joy to see!

In addition to a great week, on Friday night we enjoyed a bar-b-q and the kids were able to share what they learned through a small program. The evening capped off when Revolution Dance, a lo-cal dance troop, came to lead us in praise to God and to inspire us through their exceptional talent. What a great way to end the week; we are

praising God for such an awesome time!

ence where we declare ourselves free from our failures. The power of our bad habits is broken; the pang of guilt is removed when we affirm "Christ has set me free". We need our own personal Declaration of Independence where we declare ourselves free from our fears. Perfect love drives out fear and the peace of Christ rules our hearts as we affirm "Christ has set me free." One of my favorite lines from the hymn "in Christ Alone" comes in the last verse that says, "No guilt in life, no fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me. From life's first cry to final breathe Jesus commands my destiny." If you are feeling bound by failures or fears, maybe it is time for you to have your own personal Independence Day and make your Declaration of Independence: "Christ has set me free and free I will live." That is true freedom. And that is something worth celebrating. Happy Independence Day!

Our Heritage of

Song A couple months ago, we began looking at how vari-ous people in the Old Testa-ment responded to the goodness of God in their lives. We can see that sing-ing praise to God isn’t just something we do, instead, it

penetrates to the very heart of who we are as the body of Christ. Because worship to God is an integral response as we grow in our relationship with Him, the Bible is filled with this cause and effect of people in worship. Known best as “a man after God’s own heart”, King David was such a man who demonstrated the effect of one en-gaged in worship. In spite of bad choices and wrongdoings, he continued to hunger for God’s presence and worship our All Mighty God.

The Ark Brought to Jerusalem I Chronicles 16 tells of the event when the ark was brought to Jerusalem and the response of God’s people. David’s response to God’s faithfulness was one of worship and praise to the Lord.

7 That day David first committed to Asaph and his as-sociates this psalm of thanks to the LORD : 8 Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done. 9 Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all his wonderful acts. 10 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. 23 Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim His salvation day after day. 28 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength,

29 ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name. Bring an offering and come before Him; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness.

Next month we’ll see the praise of those who looked ahead to the coming Mesiah through the Branch of Jesse.

The following is a letter received from one of the members of Remedy One, the band that played the morning of the cook-off:

Christ Community Church, Remedy One really enjoyed the day at CCC. I knew that you had a great church, but they came there as first-timers and couldn’t stop talking about the people and place! Some of us are struggling to make ends meet, and really need-ed the money. Bass player, Mike Cowden was clear, “Donate mine to the youth camp fund.” I am likewise inspired!

Many thanks to Jeff, a long-standing friend of CCC, for his generosity and permission to print his letter to offer encourage-ment to our congregation, as I was so touched when I first read his letter. And for those who didn’t take the on-line survey, curious about how much was raised for our kid’s camps? Now that a final figure has been reached, which is higher than the on-line survey since additional money came in, here it is . . . $3,182.50! Thank you again to all who participated to make this such a successful, first-time chili cook-off and for your generous support of our kids!

The month begins with celebrations galore, The sparklers flare, The rockets soar.

The weather is now warming, the sun shines out,

And the beach goers are flocking and milling about.

The pace each day begins to

slow just a bit, And it’s nice to relax longer

moments and sit. Yet this month brings on

something else to do, It’s the biggest and best thing

meant especially for you!

And although there are several who celebrate at this time,

The LOGO team normally meets the fourth Monday night of the month at 7:00pm.

(this month we’re meeting 7/2 to prepare for Mission Sunday). Team members are welcome to join us for one event at

a time or stay on through a number of events as we propose and engage in projects that provide opportunities for our congregation, support our community, and reach

out to our world with the love of Jesus.
