Dear Reader

In the past few years, Bioenergy has evolved as a sustainable renewable energy option. With its abundant availability, lower cost and easy application, it has drawn the attention of the global community. Bioenergy opens up new horizons for inclusive growth of the society by involving the lowest segment of the pyramid.

However, the sector still needs a tremendous boost in terms of acceptance of innovation led models of funding, operations, logistics, collaboration, as well as a greater thrust on research and development .

The Ashden awards for sustainable energy, recognized by many as the "Green Oscars" is one such initiative that is doing wonderful work targeted towards recognizing and benefiting innovative projects in renewable energy and related domains. Instituted in 2001 under the patronage of HRH the Prince of Wales, the Ashden Awards draw the world's attention to inspiring sustainable energy solutions that have the potential to bring about widespread change and make energy accessible to the poorest of the poor.

The recently announced Ashden Awards 2011 remained true to form, recognizing innovation led models in clean and sustainable energy. The Bioenergy category especially showcased models targeting the bottom of the pyramid, either as customers or partners, thus demonstrating the capability of this sector to transform lives.

At BECI, we recognize and salute the role that awards such as Ashden play in supporting the global movement towards sustainable development. Let' s be a part of this movement and create a more sustainable and equitable world.

Thank you

Launch of India's first CDM project for carbon credits by the UN in Himachal Pradeshwww.dnaindia.com/india/report_carbon-trading-begins-in-himachal-pradesh_1559581

Under this project, the World Bank will buy carbon credits from new forests/plantations being developed on degraded areas in 177 Gram Panchayats covering around 4000 hectare land.

Key points of this project:

• It would impact a total area of 4,003.07 hectares.

• It would sequester the emission of 8,00,000 tonnes of CO2 from 2006 to 2025 by promoting bio- diversity through native species in remote areas.

• It would lead the transition from deforestation to reforestation and bring economic prosperity to around 5000 families in remote and backward areas of the state .

• It would generate a carbon revenue of at least Rs 20 crore to communities and individual landholders for the first crediting period of 20 years, which is a strong incentive to protect forest cover in the area.

Maruti Suzuki registered for CDM project with UNhttp://headlinesindia.mapsofindia.com/business-news/automobile/maruti-suzuki-joins-un-mission-on-climate-change-83907.html

Under this, the company would focus on bringing in environment friendly products using technologies and processes that conserve nature.

The mission will increase forest cover by 5mn hectares and improve quality of another 5mn hectares of degraded forests. These 10mn hectares of forest and will sequester 50 to 60mn tones of additional CO2 by 2020.

Government launches two market-based trading schemes to lower carbon emissionshttp://in.reuters.com/article/2011/06/05/idINIndia-57364020110605

The scheme called Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) would allow businesses using more energy than stipulated to buy tradeable energy saving certificates, or Escerts, from those using less energy.

Ashden Awards 2011

We are delighted to share with you that our company Abellon has won the Ashden Awards 2011 - considered to be the “Green Oscars” - the top most awards in the green and sustainable energy segment globally. Instituted in 2001, the Ashden Awards showcase practical solutions to combat climate change and meet the energy needs of the poor, rewarding outstanding and innovative clean energy projects.

The winners of the Ashden Awards 2011 were announced at a VIP Awards ceremony in London on 16th June, addressed by Greg Barker, UK Government Minister for Climate Change.

The Prince of Wales, Patron of the Ashden Awards, personally congratulated the award winners at a meeting held on the day of the awards ceremony.

Abellon received the award for successfully establishing a sustainable biomass pellets manufacturing model using crop waste - a local, clean source of energy that reduces CO2 by replacing polluting industrial fuels, as well as for driving economic growth, improvement in crop yields and support of farmers through its Poornakumbha initiative.

Winning the award is a matter of honour and pride for our group. It further strengthens our resolve, and inspires us to work towards Mahatma Gandhi's vision for a more sustainable and equitable world.
