From the Vicarage…
Following a great start in early Spring, the long dry patch
has caused the Vicarage garden to stall and there’s been
nothing much going on in it since Easter. Naturally, with the
arrival of the Summer fete (congratulations and thanks to
all who made it such a success) and Wimbledon and the
holidays, we should expect incessant rain until September,
and if that is the case then maybe my hypericum – very
slow to get going – and my hebe – which hasn’t got going at
all – will have something to show for themselves ere long. I
love nature at this time of year, in all its glorious
technicolour, and Finedon has been a particularly good
vantage point from which to watch that spectacle unfold.
We’ve had the open garden days, when we’ve been amazed
to discover what lies behind the town’s hedges and fences;
we’ve had rabbits in the back garden and blackbirds in the
front, all doing their thing; and in the Vicarage garden
there’s been much planting going on. I’m particularly
excited about the wisteria, which I hope will one day
festoon the north side of the house with white, overlooking
the spot where once the Scout Hut stood (RIP). A
parishioner told me the best way to make a wisteria thrive
is to bury a sheep next to it. Any offers?
Nature’s changing scene reminds us that in this world there
is no abiding city, as the Letter to the Hebrews puts it. To
live is to change, and with that in mind you’ll notice some
changes to our worship in the coming weeks and months.
The PCC has agreed that, first, the nave altar is going and
we’ll revert back to the former pattern of hearing God’s
word and praying together in front of the screen – where
we are now – and then moving up to the high altar after the
collection. I think it makes better sense that way. Second,
the Order of Service will change a bit and we’ll have new
service booklets to help you with that. Third, the eight
o’clock service, in keeping with most other eight o’clock
services in the C of E, will switch to the traditional
language that many love and still miss. Fourth, trespasses,
rather than sins, will be back in the Lord’s Prayer. And,
fifth, we plan to start meeting regularly for Evening Prayer
at 6 pm on Sundays, in church during the summer months, in
the Vicarage in the winter.
All these are, of course, subject to review, so will be
introduced for a probationary period of three months or so.
If it works we’ll keep it, if it doesn’t, we won’t. Let me know
what you make of it.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Richard.

In My DayIn My DayIn My DayIn My Day the ramblings of Hubert James
In my day it was about this time of year that the sun would shine brightly from early morning until late at night. And a century ago that was perfect for the birth of the film industry.
Course you had to have a visionary, anything new like that needs a visionary and luckily Finedon had one. He was a local bell ringer who had a little Music Hall act. He went by the name of Charlie Chapman. Like I say, you needed good natural light to make a two reeler and there was a spot down the end of Holly Walk where the sun was like a floodlight. Charlie recruited a few of his music hall mates and some local talent. From the ‘boards’ he got Sam Lauren and Oscar Hardup to headline the films with their bickering double act. Locally he had his friend Stan Miller put together a troop of tumblers who were all ex-bobbies.; Stan Miller’s Knees up Cops were an instant hit with audiences as they sped around the Green in a rickety Paddy Wagon that spilled them along Well Street or over the hedge into the park. Hilarious. But none of these were as big a hit as local girl Martha Pickford who he found working for a removals business. Martha lit up the screen. She had that special sparkle that you only find with Finedon girls. And she could act. She played the same character in all her films; Virginia Payne, Virginia had all manner of adventures but they were all plain homely stories with a simple moral. The moral was spelt out on a script card at the end of the film and was known as a ‘line’. Charlie churned out two or three films a month from Holly Walk and showed them in his own purpose built cinema down Regent Street. All the stars came together in one famous film. In it Lauren and Hardup were searching for a magic, crazily designed waistcoat which Charlie had found in a dustbin. Martha’s Virginia character brought everyone together to forget their differences. The whole scene took place on the bridge on Station Road. With Charlie shooting streams of water up into the air to form an arty arc. The film was called Way Out Vest and featured Lauren and Hardup doing a little dance and singing; “Oh the new bridge fountains of Virginia was a tale with a homespun line”. All together now.
Christian Crackers
A member of a congregation saw an elderly chapel steward take money off the plate before taking up the collection. After the service he remarked kindly about this to him. The steward brought a £5 note from his pocket and said ‘This £5 note has started the collection for the past ten years!
