SCINTILLATING

SUPERSTARS

SUPERSTARS

Dear Scintillating Superstars,

First of all, we rocked it out and

ranked #9 in the PEARL Division in the

$700,000 Unit Circle of Excellence. I was

beaming with pride and we were still sitting

in a front row seat at Seminar. (It was over

to the side, but still front row!) I think this

year I was hyper focused on the National

Area Debuts.

I counted the directors that were on

the steps, I watched the families walk out in

their color coordinated new outfits,

and I was amused at Ron Allison’s

growl, but blocked out what

Reed might say or do.

I looked at the faces of the

new NSDs, I listened to their

words, and I imagined the scene

in June of 2010.

The dominant thought

that runs through my mind

morning and night, morning

and night, is what will it take to get there? I

know the numbers. We need 20 offspring

directors, with a combination of first and

second line. We have 10 first line directors

and have 3 of the 10 second line we need. Or

we could have 11 or 12 first line directors

and need only 5 or 6 second line. There are

lots of variables to consider.

But I always back off from the

numbers and lean into the people. I keep

thinking: which women in our units have a

burning desire to want more from their

business? Which consultants have a

purpose that MK can fulfill? Whose dreams

could be fulfilled if they work MK in a

different way, with more focus, intensity and

hours?

And last, who is willing to give, maybe

sacrificially, in the next few months, to

reach our goal of 7 DIQs by November?

That’s a lot to ask.

I can’t ask for myself. I want to

know what it will do for her. Will the

benefits outweigh the cost? How will she

feel about booking BOLD AND BLACK

SKIN Care classes 3 to 5 to 10 a week?

How will she feel about asking every

single person at every single appt. to

listen to a hotline, a CD or her

director tell about this MK

career opportunity? How will

she feel about intentionally

doing 3 to 5 to 10 IPAs a day,

every day till she has 8 to

10 team members and can

submit for DIQ November

8th?

And how will she feel going to

a special dinner at our NSD Sandy

Miller’s Million Dollar Mansion to

celebrate the birth of our National Area

and my birthday besides? How will she

feel about being one of the Martin Area

Directors? How will she feel about being

on the Seminar Stage Steps in Dallas

next July?

Will the pride and the

achievement and the future outweigh

the efforts needed? I can only promise

to work with you and to believe in you,

if you’ll do the same for me. My vision is

clear….the Martin National Area is

debuting on Seminar Stage 2010. I need

your help to make it a reality.

Love and belief,

THIS MONTH’S ISSUE OF:

IF SHE CAN, I CAN! Each month I will feature a different Future Martin Area Director in our newsletter.

Director Name: Tracy Steffen

Former Occupation: Radio Farm Broadcaster and Advertising Executive

City/State: Newark, Illinois

Joined Mary Kay: November 1999

Debuted as a Director: July 2006

# of months driving free: 39

1099 for 2008: no clue… but my highest check is $3,636.21

What was the sequence of events that brought you into the company (recruiting layering

process)? This question makes me laugh out loud. I was probably the most stubborn client Jeanie

ever had when it came to the layering process. I had every layer possible! I had been to a meeting. I

went to a special event at Jeanie’s house where our National Sandy Miller spoke. I listened to cds

and read the Applause magazine.

Why did you join? My journey with Mary Kay started in high school when I used a few products

and Jeanie was my favorite teacher. I had to go to college and work in my career – farm broadcasting – which at the time I thought was my dream career. God had a different plan. I was part of a start-up company that specialized in ag broadcasting. That company went bankrupt after the first year of operation, and I was jobless and heartbroken and scared. That’s when I came back to my hometown. I was a farm broadcaster at a small station and really felt like there wasn’t any more room for me to grow professionally nor was there encouragement from my manager. I simply needed more.

Why did you want to be a director? I am steady and consistent – not always the fastest when it

comes to moving up in the company. I had been a Red Jacket for a LONG time – my director might

have even said I was in Red Jacket jail. Basically, I was tired of going to the same classes and

needed the next step up. I needed to learn something new and wanted to improve my leadership

skills. I needed to grow. I stay a Director for two reasons – I love helping women build their own MK

businesses and I’m proud to be one of the charter directors of the Future Martin National Area.

Page 11: July 2009 Newsletter

Page 11

Has there been a dark season in your Mary Kay career? If so, how did you come through

it? Linda Toupin always says, “You don’t have a story until something goes wrong”. I have a

story! When I debuted as a Director, I actually finished Premier Club three months after my

debut earning me a new Grand Prix. I earned that car on the momentum of building my personal

team to become a Director as well as the fact that I had a consultant earn her car too. One year

later, that same consultant, Kristi Mathre, debuted as a Director. During that first year, I was trying

to figure out my new job as a leader in Mary Kay. I was scared and not sure what was going to

happen debuting a director so soon, and I worried about losing my car. I focused on that fear

rather than working my business like I’m capable of. Because my focus was not on IPA’s and

leadership, my lack of activity resulted in having to give my car back to the company and then

feeling really bad about it and questioning my leadership in Mary Kay. After lots of tears and soul

searching and grieving and praying and reading and listening to cds, I got tough again. I turned

my focus to my personal business and re-earned the consultant car. Our unit has beat our best

production January through June… and I’m determined to be in a Pink Cadillac when the Future

Martin National Area debuts at Seminar June 2010! Personal work gives me integrity, and

integrity gives me confidence to lead!

What is the one thing that was difficult for you or you were afraid of in this business? It’s always difficult for me to take the next step – that leap of faith- so to speak that I need to take to grow. Two specific examples would be hiring office help and hiring babysitters when I didn’t have the money to pay for it. I’m in that place now – I know I need more help and I don’t have the cash to support that help today. But I know I won’t get to the next level without more home and office support. So, I have made that decision and hired 20 hours of office help.

During what time period did you have the greatest growth of income and what was the

growth? When I became a Director, I tripled my commission checks, averaging about $3000 a

month.

What do you attribute the growth? Personal activity with INTENTION and a specific goal in

mind , one I visualized the results (celebration) every day, several times a day.
