Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel consists of two sets of short sayings
attributed to Jesus. The first set centers on the cost of
discipleship, while the second focuses on hospitality.
The themes are appropriate because this reading is part
of what was traditionally called the “mission discourse.”
The saying that embraces the whole of the mission dis-
course is “Whoever finds his life will lose it and whoever
loses his life for my sake will find it.” Are you willing to
live the paradox? What does the Gospel teach you
about the cost of discipleship and how does it relate to
your experience so far?

Dear Friends,
The Lord’s message in to-
day's Gospel is indeed a chal-
lenging one: “Whoever loves
father or mother more than
me, and whoever loves son or
daughter more than me is not
worthy of me.” I know that
this message is extremely dif-
ficult for me to swallow. Sure,
it is easy to say that money,
events, or “things” of this world must be “loved less”
than God, but when it comes to the important things
such as my family and friends I have difficulty com-
prehending how to do this since (just like all of us) I
see a little bit of God in them and have a hard time
managing the hierarchy that Jesus clearly sets. It is
not an easy task to put God at the “top” of the ladder
of love.
I think the crux of this difficulty
resides in our conceptualization of
the hierarchy of which Jesus
speaks. We tend to think of and
arrange our actions and efforts
based on a top-down mental lad-
der of value. This conceptualiza-
tion (just like a “ranking” system in
sports, college lists, etc.) begs an
ordered quantification of what we
value: the higher/lower we climb
up/down our hierarchy the more/
less valuable a thing is. This con-
ceptual tool works for virtually
every choice that we make…
except for love of God (Christ)
above all things; Because love of
God gives value to our world.
I propose that we conceptual-
ize this hierarchy our Lord speaks
of today not as a “ladder”…but a
“wheel”: spokes and rims (us
and all of creation) mean nothing
without the hub (God).
Below is an illumination of
Saint Hildegard of Bingen’s vision
of the choirs of angels surrounding God. God is the
bright white center. Let's imagine that these angels
had no God to orbit. They would not be connected,
they would not be in harmony, and they certainly
would not have any value to each other. The only
thing giving them these qualities is God Himself at
the center. This truth applies to us as well.
Brothers and sisters, God is our center. He does
not sit on top of a hierarchy precisely because He is
beyond our hierarchy. He orders and colors our
lives in such a way that we can clearly see and love
His creation. The relationships and bonds that we
cherish are all due to Him. To love at our best we
must love him first and understand the gifts He has
given us.
In Christ,
Father Matt
