Is Tolerance the Highest Value?

Tolerance seems increasingly to be the highest ideal in our West-ern Society. We would prefer not to offer even a suggestion regarding someones conduct or behavior for fear of being seen to be judgmental.

You can sometimes hear someone say, Thats good for you, but its not good for me. But, is this really helpful? Friends look out for each other and give advice when needed.

For example, if a friend told me he was thinking about trying a particular drug, I would strongly discourage him from embarking on the possibility of a life of addiction. I would hope that he would also give me the same counsel if that was my intention.

Tolerance, too, is related to our own impression of what is acceptable. I tend to be more comfortable with my own shortcomings just as long as they are different than those of another person.

Our pluralist society is increasingly becoming post-modern, with virtu-ally no conclusive narratives that can be universally applied and thats a

trend we must acknowledge. International-ly, we may ob-serve the divi-sions that are being created, often for self-serving rea-sons. There are those who can sometimes hide behind religion in order to promote potentially destructive values.

At the same time, I believe as a com-munity, we do need to honor others and show respect even if we may not agree with their beliefs and their values.

We are to be peacemakers and dem-onstrate that standard with whomever we may meet. I believe our sincerity and caring attitude will truly break down the barriers in society.

Abbotsford City Council Adopts new Official Community Plan

Abbotsford City Council has re-ceived and adopted a new Of-ficial Community Plan (OCP), completing the Abbotsforward project, announced Mayor Henry Braun.

An OCP is one of the City of Abbots-fords most important planning tools. It influences the way the community grows and develops by guiding how land can be used.

Abbotsfords new OCP is intended to be a powerful catalyst for a more focused and improved Abbotsford at 200,000 people than it has been up until now, said Braun. It is based on the input and ideas from nearly 8,000 interactions with residents and a rig-orous technical analysis of different growth options.

The OCPs urban structure focuses the most diverse and highest densities of uses around three types of centres: a City Centre, Urban Centres and Neigh-bourhood Centres. This urban structure provides the foundation for a land use plan that projects 75% of new growth

will occur in existing neighbourhoods and 25% in new neighbourhoods. The Plan promotes growth in areas where it is financially sustainable by using existing infrastructure and amenities, and aligns itself with new priorities like making walking, biking and transit delightful.

While tonights OCP adoption sees the completion of the Abbotsforward pro-cess, the work is only just now begin-ning for our community, said Braun. The OCP sets the guiding template for other City plans and strategies, and we have already started the process of developing Neighbourhood Plans that will further support appropriate growth and development in strategic areas of our community.

I would like to thank the OCP Citi-zen Advisory Commission and all of the residents who participated in the creation of the new plan, said Braun. The communitys interest and valu-able input was a key component in en-suring this plan addresses a future Ab-botsford that is inclusive of everyone.

Programs are breaking down barriers to post-secondary education

Students who face barriers to education and training such as physical or learning disabilities are being supported with a range of programs being developed by individ-ual public post-secondary institutions throughout the province.

The Province is providing one-time, targeted investments of $75,000 for 20 public post-secondary institutions. In addition, Vancouver Community College (VCC) has received $275,000 to develop programs and supports for students with disabilities.

Our government is working with universities, colleges and institutes to ensure that a disability is not a barrier to accessing high-quality post-secondary education, said Vancouver-False Creek MLA Sam Sullivan, on behalf of Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson. With access to education and training, students with disabili-ties can develop the in-demand skills needed to support their families, com-munities and the provincial economy.

With the $75,000 in funding, VCC plans to offer two full-time eight-week

programs that will introduce members of the deaf and hard of hearing commu-nity to five Red Seal trades programs: auto service technician, auto collision, auto refinishing, cook and baker. The Access to Automotive Trades and Ac-cess to Food Services program will help students develop in-demand skills for employment. Students who suc-cessfully complete the training will be able to move on to a full-time founda-tion program.

People with disabilities may need ex-tra support to be successful at school, or as they prepare for employment, said Social Development and Social Inno-vation Minister Michelle Stilwell. We are investing more than $1.9 million to help public post-secondary institutions continue with programs and develop new techniques to help students with disabilities train for meaningful em-ployment.

The additional $275,000 that VCC received will go toward training and technology to assist students with dis-abilities to prepare for post-secondary education. For example, the college has begun offering braille language-

development courses for students starting in programs for the visually impaired.

VCC is always looking for innovative ways to support students with disabilities. Thanks to this funding, we can offer the resources that students need for success, said VCC president Peter Nunoda. We are proud to serve 1,250 students with disabilities, the largest per-centage of students in the post-secondary system.

The $1.9 million in 2016-17 builds on investments made in 2014-15 and 2015-16, for a total of more than $4 million.

As a deaf person, there are no barriers to accessing the outstanding programs and employment opportunities at Vancouver Community College, said VCC student Vicente P. Teng.

The Centre for Accessible Post-Sec-ondary Education Resources (CAPER)-BC, Post-Secondary Communication

Access Services (PCAS), and the Program for Institutional Loans of Assistive Technology (PILAT) each received $50,000 to support public post-secondary schools throughout the province to access assistive tech-nology and services, such as teaching and learning materials for visually and hearing-impaired students.

Supporting learners with disabilities is a priority of B.C.s Skills for Jobs Blueprint and Accessibility 2024.

$100M fund to boost B.C.s tech sector and job creation

The Province of British Columbia is creating a $100-million ven-ture capital fund as it builds the foundation for a compre-hensive technology strategy aimed at stimulating growth in the fast-moving sector, creating jobs and strengthen-ing a diverse economy.

Premier Christy Clark today announced the new BC Tech Fund as part of the first of three economy-building pil-lars in the B.C. governments multi-year #BCTECH Strat-egy that will drive growth and job creation in the multi-billion dollar tech sector.

B.C.s technology sector is consistently growing faster than the overall economy making this the perfect time to catch the wave and help smaller companies join in the ranks of economy builders, said Premier Clark. With

this fund were creating a stronger foundation for B.C.s technology sector, which is a major employer in communities across the province, to shine on the global stage while creating well-paying j o b s b a c k at home for British Co-lumbians.

The BC Tech F u n d w i l l help prom-i s i n g t e c h companies in B.C.s tech sector by cre-ating an avenue for capital funding, enabling them to take the next step towards joining the ranks of other job-creating tech companies.

The new fund will also help develop a sustainable venture capital system in the prov-

ince, building on the success of the B.C. Renaissance Capital Fund (BCRCF), the provinces well developed Angel investment commu-nity, and responding to cur-rent funding needs.

Capital is one of three pil-lars in the forthcoming #BCTECH Strategy. This first pillar, announced today, also includes continuing to support B.C.s competitive tax system and research en-vironment.

The remaining two pillars, talent and markets, include actions to deepen the B.C. technology talent pool by developing and attracting the highest quality talent, and actions to make it eas-

ier to access new markets. The com-plete #BCTECH Strategy will be an-nounced in January.

The BC Tech Fund will be in operation in 2016 following an open procure-ment process to se-cure a private sector fund manager to

administer it. The process for identifying a fund manager begins today with a posting for a Negotiated Request for Proposal (NRFP).

B.C.s technology sector, a key pillar of the BC Jobs Plan, is consistently grow-

ing faster than the economy overall. Its continued growth is integral to diversifying the Provinces economy, strengthening B.C.s busi-ness landscape, and creating jobs in B.C. communities. The BC Jobs Plan builds on the strengths of B.C.s key sectors and its educated and skilled workforce, keeping the province diverse, strong and growing.

Entertainment Line Up Will Wow Crowds at Canada Day 2016

An impressive evening entertain-ment lineup has been booked for this years Canada Day evening celebrations.

This years Canada Day 2016 Celebra-tions, sponsored by Prospera Credit Union, and with funding in part from the Department of Canadian Heritage, will be full of new and exciting enter-tainers including TEAM T&J, Jada Klein, Her Brothers, and Fionn.

TEAM T&J are a fresh dose of active and uplifting family entertain-ment from Toronto. TEAM T&J will be engaging the Canada Day crowds with creative, inspiring and interactive live music.

Her Brothers have been performing throughout BC since 2008, and are made up of three brothers, Gabe, Josh, and Levi. They recently held a benefit concert for Fort McMurray residents.

Fionn, is a twin sister singer/song-writer duo from the City of Whiterock, BC and they perform an eclectic mix of guitar and mandolin based folk, country and pop.

Our goal is to provide a family friend-ly celebration for all ages to enjoy at the Canada Day family festival, and I hope that everyone comes out this July 1 to enjoy this great line up of local entertainment, said Braun.

British Columbia is one step closer to ending poverty wages:

BC NDP commit to $15/hour mini-mum wage Vancouver The BC Federation of Labour is applauding John Horgan and the BC NDP for committing to bring the minimum wage up to $15/hour.

British Columbians are struggling to make ends meet with the ever increas-ing cost of living and skyrocketing user fees, said Irene Lanzinger, president of the BC Federation of Labour. Christy Clark is well-aware that people working

full-time in this province and earning the minimum wage are living thousands of dollars below the poverty line, but she just doesnt care.

We welcome the announcement from the BC NDP to-day. John Horgan gets it - he understands that when you give low-wage workers a fair wage, you are also sup-porting families, communities and the local economy.

At a speech this morning in Kamloops, Horgan com-mitted to implementing a $15/hour minimum wage by the end of his first term in office.

This is exactly the kind of plan we have been asking Christy Clark to implement for close to two years now, said Lanzinger. But despite strong public support, she has ignored the problem of growing poverty and inequality in BC.

In a recent poll, 76% of British Columbians said they supported a $15/hour minimum wage, and 83% said that a person working full-time should not be living below the poverty line.

There are over 100,000 people earning minimum wage ($10.45/hour) in BC, and nearly half-a-million earning less than $15/hour.

Today, low-wage workers are one step closer to being lifted out of poverty.. said Lanzinger.

B.C. spring tourism growth highest on record

The number of international visi-tors to British Columbia went over the million mark for the first few months of 2016 according to

the latest statistics.

From January to April, 1,172,637 visi-tors came to our province resulting in an 18.2% increase over the same period last year.

April also experienced exceptional growth as 328,006 visitors travelled to British Columbia. This is a 21% increase over April of 2015 (271,136 visitors same month last year). This is the highest number of visitors to B.C. on record for all the months of April over the last 10 years.

British Columbia experienced growth in international overnight entries from some of its key markets in April over the same month in 2015, including:

Germany up 33.4%

China up 32.9%

South Korea up 31.9%

Mexico up 28%

Australia up 26.4%

U.S. up 22.1%

Japan up 9.3%

India up 6.8%

United Kingdom up 0.7%

The strong growth in visitors from

China, South Korea and Mexico is partly due to increased air access/ad-ditional flights to Vancouver from those countries. Each new daily international flight to Vancouver International Air-port (YVR) creates between 150 and 200 new jobs at the airport, plus more jobs in B.C.s hotels, tourism attrac-tions and businesses.

The new flights are thanks in part to a 2012 jet fuel tax eliminated by govern-ment to reduce costs for airlines and give travellers more choice.

Provincial tourism growth has also been helped by the low Canadian dol-lar along with Destination BCs new international marketing strategy.

Another factor for the exceptional growth in tourism in B.C. is Aboriginal tourism. It is one of the fastest-growing tourism areas in the province. It experi-enced a doubling of revenue from $20 million to $42 million (2006-2012). In addition, there are more than 300 Ab-original tourism businesses in British Columbia. This exceeds the BC Jobs Plan target of 300 Aboriginal owned tourism businesses by 2017.

WSO STATEMENT ON PASSING OF LT. COL. PRITAM SINGH JAUHAL

The World Sikh Organization of Canada offers its tributes to Lt. Col. Pritam Singh Jauhal who passed away on Sunday at the age of 95. Lt. Col Jauhal led the struggle to wear turbans in Royal Canadian Le-gion halls in the early 1990s.

In 1993 Lt. Col Jauhal, a World War II veteran and other Sikhs were barred from entering the Royal Canadian Legion in Surrey because of their tur-bans after the annual Remembrance Day parade. The WSO had supported Lt. Col. Jauhal in his attempts to have

the Legion permit the wearing of the turban. The national organization eventually changed its policy after a national debate.

WSO Senior Policy Advisor Gian Singh Sandhu said today, the WSO had the privilege of working with Lt. Col. Jauhal in his struggle to have the turban accommodated at Royal Cana-dian Legion halls. We will remember him for his courage and determination. His unwavering commitment to justice and human rights is an inspiration. Our sincerest condolences are with his family.

WSO President Mukhbir Singh said, Lt. Col. Jauhal is a Canadian Sikh icon and he is an example for the next gen-eration of Canadian Sikhs that equity and human rights are worth struggling for. He displayed that same commit-ment to human rights most recently when he opposed laws limiting the freedoms of Muslim women who wear the niqab. Lt. Col. Jauhals contribu-tions to the Canadian Sikh community will be fondly remembered.

Opposition urges the Prime Minister to engage President Obama in

renegotiation of Lumber Agreement

Deputy Leader of the Of-ficial Opposition, the Hon. Denis Lebel, and the Official Opposition Critic for Asia-Pacific Gateway, Mr. Todd Doherty, denounce the Liberal Governments inaction on the Canada-U.S. Softwood Lumber Agreement.

At the first visit in Washing-ton, Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Obama gave themselves 100 days to find a negotiation framework. In light of the upcoming visit of President Obama to Ottawa for the North American Leaders Summit, there is nothing on softwood lumber, said Mr. Lebel.

In 2014, over 65% of our forestry exports went to the U.S., generating $20 billion for the Canadian economy and creating over 232,000 jobs in the forest industry.

A failure to re-negotiate one of the most important trade agreements be-tween Canada and the United States is inexcusable. For a government that has an entire committee dedicated to the

relations between our two countries, it is clear that the Liberals are once again failing to stand up for the hardworking Canadians employed in the forestry sector, said Mr. Todd Doherty, MP for Cariboo Prince George.

In light of tomorrows North Ameri-can Leaders Summit, it is time that the Prime Minister makes a serious commitment to discuss this issue with President Obama, and provides details on the renegotiation of the Softwood Lumber Agreement. NDP ADOPTS FINAL 2017 LEADERSHIP RACE RULES

The Federal Council of the New Democratic Party of Canada has ratified the rules governing their 2017 leadership race that will see the next leader of the party elected. The initial rules were set by the NDP Federal Executive on June 6th, follow-ing parameters set out by the Federal Council on May 15th, 2016.

The NDP is innovating with the adop-tion of these leadership rules, replacing the traditional leadership Convention with a month-long series of run-off contests.

An all-candidates showcase will kick off the balloting process, followed by a maximum of five rounds of balloting spread throughout October 2017. Each ballots results will be announced in a series of mini-conventions at differ-ent locations across the country as the process unfolds.

This will allow for greater flexibility in voting, and increased participation by

the members. It will have the additional benefit of allowing for the excitement and momentum of the race to build over a longer period of time.

Our goal was to come up with inno-vative rules to make the race engag-ing and maximise the participation of members from across the country, while ensuring the race is as fair and transparent as possible for all leader-ship candidates, said NDP President Marit Stiles.

With the rules now in place, the NDP leadership race will officially begin on July 2nd 2017, and a Leader will be selected no later than October 29, 2017.

This is an exciting time for our party and its members, and with these rules now set, I know New Democrats are eager to begin the process of choos-ing our next leader and the next Prime Minister of Canada, said NDP Vice-President Hans Marotte.
