In Him

In him we have redemption by his blood. In him, we are chosen. In him, we were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. In him, may we know the hope that belongs to our call. The Easter Season has again come and gone along with Pentecost and the feast of Corpus Christi. We have been given what we need to be God’s hands and feet here on earth. Have you allowed yourself time for silence to listen? Listen, with love. Listen, with courage. Listen, with humility. Listen, with strength. What is your call? What can you do? Have you al-lowed the grace of the Holy Spirit to be effective in you? Are you charitable, joyful, peace filled, patient, kind, good, generous, gentle, faithful, modest, self-controlled or possess chastity? Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mark 6: 7-13

My brothers and sisters,

Today’s gospel is an exercise in trust. Here we have Jesus, having just been rejected by the people of his hometown, sending out his disciples two by two into the countryside to cast out demons and preach repen-tance. And oh, by the way, don’t take any money or extra clothes or anything. Just go.

I wonder what my response would be. No, I don’t really have to won-der, because I already know. I would spend some time arguing with him over what I really needed for the journey. I have to have my hikers and my day pack, first aid kit and at least some trail mix and bottled water, right? And then what about once I get there? Is there like a book, or something that will tell me what I should say?

You see, this is a conversation I have had with God on more than one occasion. As a general rule, I’m pretty self-reliant. But I’m also a wor-rier. I like to have everything in place, and backups for my backups. Experience tells me that having a plan B is prudent. But sometimes I’m so busy making all of the “necessary preparations” that my plan gets in the way of God’s plan. Sound familiar?

Jesus didn’t ask eloquent speakers or great theologians to go out. He asked twelve ordinary, hardworking men. Simple men, armed with nothing but their faith. And that faith was exactly what they needed to fulfill His mission.

What might God be asking of you?

Peacemakers

Pope Leo XIII (1810—1903)

Born Vincenzo Pecci, he had been archbishop of Perugia, when elected to succeed Pope Pius IX in 1878. Pius had done much to enhance the image and power of the papacy. His actions left little opening for constructive dialogue with issues of the day. The new pope, Leo XIII, was keen to overcome this defensive attitude.

Without doubt, Leo’s most significant contribution was in his judgements in the social realm. His 1891 encyclical, RERUM NOVARUM, ushered in the modern era of Catholic social teaching. Leo was the first pope to address the problems associ-ated with the rise of industrial capitalism and the plight of the working class.

While reflecting socialism, Leo’s encyclical implied a strong critique of unchecked capitalism. The Church declared its com-mitment to principles of social justice, the dignity of labor, and defense of the poor. This commitment to be further elaborated upon in the following century of Catholic social teaching.
