FAITH FORMATION NEWS FROM FATHER BACKES...

On June 30th, we gathered in the Church Hall, to wish Marge Sullivan a happy retirement and to thank her for all that she did in leading our students in grades Pre-K to 6 to a greater knowledge and appreciation of the truths of our Catholic Faith. We thanked her for the many hours and all the efforts that she invested in our program in the time that she was our leader. But all good things must come to an end and our program will go on. During the time that we were searching for someone to follow in Marge's footsteps, we were fortunate to have an applicant come forward who began her involvement in Faith Formation about 20 years ago, right here in our parish. She became a convert to Catholicism under the guidance of Father Fleming, enrolled her 2 children in our program and began her teaching right here until her family moved from Poughkeepsie to Dover Plains where she continued teaching and became and assistant to the director at St. Charles and eventually director of the program there and continued in that role when St. Charles merged with St. John's in Pawling. In the meantime, her children grew up and moved out on their own and she moved to a smaller home... back in Pleasant Valley and at St. Stan's where she read the bulletin one Sunday and read of our search. We are happy to introduce Nan Kramer as our new Director of grades Pre-K through 6 starting July 1. She is well-known and respected for her work, and I personally worked with Nan for my 7 years at Dover and know that she will be a fine addition to our Staff. Please welcome her to our Parish Family and make her feel welcome. You will be hearing more from her in the coming weeks.

2019-2020 Registration is ongoing! All families should have received information about re-

registration. Call the parish office for more information. The Faith Formation Office will reopen in August.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2019

ROAR: Life is Wild – God is Good!

Registration is still open- but don’t delay! Forms for participants and volunteers are available by the doors of the church, in the parish office, and for download from our Parish website.

August 5-9, 2019 | 10am – 1pm Participants $30

Open to children in Pre-K 4 through 6th Grade Volunteers needed: 7th grade to adults

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR VBS Each year we depend upon the generosity of our parishioners to help make Vacation Bible School a success! Most of the cost of our craft supplies, decorations and the program materials itself are covered by the cost of the “tuition”, however the snack items especially are items traditionally donated by Parishioners. Beginning next week, please see the wall in the church hall for the items that are needed and when we need them. In some cases, we may only need to borrow. Thank you for your help- this is always a fun activity.

FROM MRS. SULLIVAN... To the Children, Families,

Parishioners, and Staff of St. Stan’s You have left Your Handprints on My Heart!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the beautiful fellowship with which we celebrated my retirement.

Having the opportunity to connect with so many of you was such a great pleasure and I hold each one of you in my heart. Your kind words meant so much, and the gift certificate from the parish and the scrapbook from the children I will cherish dearly! For over 25 years I have joyfully served as a Catechist here at St. Stan’s. During these last four years I have had the privilege and honor of serving as Coordinator for our K-6 Faith Formation program. Now that I am retiring, how do I adequately thank you for all that you have given the parish and me during our time together? There have been so many volunteers who have generously given so much to make our program work. Our catechists and volunteers in the classroom are the greatest! Our Family Catechesis team is like no other in the Archdiocese! Our Advent and Lenten programs for children and parents have been amazing, for where else can you find St. Nicholas with miter and staff making a visit or Jesus riding up the aisle on a donkey, but here at St. Stan’s! And our VBS program keep us all dancing with the love of Jesus each summer! We do what we do because we have been called by God to serve the children in our Parish and we do it with joy and love! During this time I pray that in some small way God has used me to help you come to know how much you are loved and to respond to this love by continually growing your faith through Prayer, Sacraments, Scripture, Service and Community. May God bless you all and may you continue to draw close to the Heart of Jesus, our Good Shepherd!

“LOCAL” SHRINES OF INTEREST Every year we put in an announcement about various shrines that can be a summer day trip for family or an addition to a week-long or weekend vacation. Any of these can be looked at online to see more information. A pilgrimage is a journey that the faithful make to a place that is considered holy. To us Catholics, a pilgrimage is more than just traveling to historic sites and viewing religious relics. It is a journey seeking spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God. A favorite visiting place:

Shrine of Our Lady of the Martyrs / Shrine of the North American Martyrs, Auriesville, NY 136 Shrine Rd #2, Fultonville, NY 12072

(About 2 ¼ hours up the Thruway) This shrine is dedicated to the three Jesuit missionaries who were martyred at the Mohawk Indian village of Ossernenon in 1642 and 1646... It is a wonderfully casual place for young children to wander around the acreage to see the rustic, Native American atmosphere. The church is a large round coliseum with the inside architecture having 4 center wooden altars and pews. The shrine also focuses on St Kateri Tekakwitha – “Lily of the Mohawks.”

The National Shrine of The Divine Mercy 2 Prospect Hill Rd, Stockbridge, MA 01262

(A beautiful ride (1-1/3 hrs) up Taconic and 10 miles east on the Mass Turnpike)

Lovely grounds and gift shop. Make a weekend of it – near Lee Clothing Outlets, Norman Rockwell Museum and the quaint town of Stockbridge.

Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Doylestown PA About 3 hours away – near Philadelphia Beautiful grounds, gorgeous church, great town to check out the shops

Even further south, in Washington DC, is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Magnificent upstairs and down – it is a full day browsing around the main church and side altars on both upper and lower levels. Very nice, complete cafeteria and plenty of restrooms.

Of course, when in NYC – a stop by St Patrick’s Cathedral is a must!
