PRAYER & WORSHIP

In the readings this Sunday, we hear a very familiar parable, one that many of us have heard over and over. But many of us are not farmers and the parable sounds nice, but do we really get the deeper message of what Jesus is sharing? In the original version, the message is that our receptivity to the Word of God is what matters. In the modern version, as God’s hands, we share in sowing the Word of God. Do we just preach and not get the soil ready to receive? To me this is telling us that preparing the soil is as important. Teaching people how to pray, how to be open to the movement of God in their lives is as important as giving them messages and passages from scripture. We need to make sure our kids have developed a relationship with God and that we have one also. If the soil is not tilled and ready, the crop will not grow. How do we till the soil of our soul and get it ready to accept God’s movement in our lives? There are simple things such as spending quiet time with God each day or reading scripture each day and letting God talk to you through that. We must be attuned to how receptive we are and how we prepare our kids to hear God. Lets all try to be more attuned to God this week.

Sr. Karen Collier, SSL

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?Watch out for friend fatigue

After months of staying home, parents who are opting to engage in safe playdates should be aware of “friend fatigue.” Especially in the summer months, children have time for longer playdates, and often choose to spend time with their best friends whenever they can. But these playdates can be too much of a good thing. Pay attention to cues from your child that he or she needs a break — excessive fighting, bad behaviors, short tempers. Use informed judgement to determine when it’s best for children to take a play break for a few days or so. For more information, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Summer friends are great and all, but…” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

Best wishes to Sr. Mary Elizabeth Galt, BVM

on her retirement! The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been blessed by Sister Mary Elizabeth Galt’s knowledge, talent and service for over 56 years. As a child, Sr. Mary Elizabeth was taught in Los Angeles by the religious order she eventually chose to join, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Sr. Mary Elizabeth’s first teaching assignment was at Our Lady of Lourdes and she taught at schools throughout the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys until she was named Elementary School Supervisor for the San Fernando Pastoral Region. She went on to take the position of Associate Superintendent for all Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese and then became Superintendent of Elementary Schools in 2000. In 2003, Sr. Mary Elizabeth became the second female Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and remained in that position for the next 17 years. We extend our gratitude to Sr. Mary Elizabeth for the work she has done in the Archdiocese and are honored to have her as a part of our parish community!
