Its on the extreme western edge ofthe state. From Gateway Colorado youhave to drive 50 miles to the north orsouth to even find a highway going west

out here.If you take the long way fromMontrose, you will travel through thebeautifully scenic country betweenRidgeway and Placerville on Hwy 62,then traverse the pastoral serenity ofthe Uncompaghre Plateau on Hwy 145before crossing Colorados historic ura-nium mining country on Hwy 141 andfinally driving through the majestic vis-tas of the Dolores River Canyon.

The canyon is cut from the red sand-stone strata stretching from WesternKansas through Red Rocks, Gardenof the Gods and Roxborough Park allthe way to Bryce Canyon in Utah. The winding curves of the Dolores haveturned this into a wonderland of reveal-ing turns and breathtaking scenery. Not

only that, theres never a rush hour inDolores Canyon. When we were there atthe first of the month, we virtually hadthe highway to ourselves.

This is a road made for a responsive, exhilarating automobile and a distin-guished array of just such vehicles awaitin the Gateway Auto Museum a lovinglook back at Americas affair with thehorseless carriage exquisite examplesof the cars that won our hearts, warmedour souls and carried us across thisincredible nation.

The museum is the creation of John Hendricks, the man behind theDiscovery Channel. Many of the vehiclesare from his personal collection. Theyare immaculate and for the most partstill functional.

The museum is divided into eras andthe first is titled Mass Mobility, whichhas notable examples of the earliestautos in the American line. One of theseis the 1912 Ford Model T Speedster, aracy looking antique sports car thatsnot what the phrase Model T brings tomind a hint of things to come.

Also within this gallery is the opulentand legendary 1913 Pierce-Arrow Model38C Brougham. A remarkable portentof the luxury the cars of the future weresoon to provide.

You will also see one of the earlyCadillacs, a 1906 M Coupe which wasone of the first enclosed cabs. The turn-of-the-century interior lights and otherdetails of the carriage-like vehicle areintriguing indeed.

The next gallery is called HollywoodHigh Style 1930s and in it you willfind some of the dream cars only moviestars could afford during the GreatDepression. The 1932 Auburn 8-100ASpeedster will surely catch your eye. Itssweeping fender curves, ornate two-tonepaint, chrome accents, leather interior, fender mounted spare, strap on sideview mirror, winged angel hood orna-

ment and exposed horns make this anoutstanding example of 1930s lavish-ness.

The 1936 Auburn 8-852 SuperchargedCabriolet was design by E. L. Cord and was one of the fastest stock cars of

the era, breaking 70 speed recordsat Bonneville during 1937. Cord how-ever was under investigation for stockmanipulation and fraud so only 1,844 ofthe vehicles were ever built.

Also of note are the 1939 MercurySport Convertible and the 1930Duesenberg Model J TransformableCabriolet. The latter could be com-plete enclosed, an open driver town caror a fully uncovered touring car. TheDuesenberg, incidentally, coined thephrase, Its a doosie!

The Timeline Gallery captures theevolution of the automobile from the1928 Cadillac Sport Phaeton Convertibleto the 1961 Chrysler 300G ConvertibleCoupe.

In this group youll find the 1937Hudson Terraplane Convertible Coupe with its wheel skirts, jacketed wheel-mounted spare, plus a unique hoodornament and turn signals made itstand out in its time. It still does.

Other notable vehicles include the1947 Chrysler Town and Country Two-Door Convertible and the 1941 LincolnContinental Coupe with its boxy curvesand styling similar to a Bentley. Thentheres the 1950 Packard Super EightVictoria Convertible Coupe, a 1953Cadillac El Dorado Convertible andthe 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser Two-Door Convertible, which thanksto its 290 bhp, 368 cubic inch V8 waspicked as the Official Pace Car of theIndianapolis 500 that year. It is here

complete with race day markings. Many visitors, especially Boomers, willbe taken by the Muscle Car Collection. This includes the 1967 Ford MustangShelby GT 500, 1968 Chevrolet CamaroSS/RS Convertible, a 1970 PlymouthBarracuda Hemi Cuda, a vintage 1971Pontiac GTO Judge Coupe, the legend-ary 1971 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 Two-DoorConvertible and the 1981 Pontiac TransAm, The Bandit Special Edition.

Muscle car fans worshipped thesepowerful vehicles that reigned supremeon the streets and stock car tracks inthe halcyon days of cheap and plenti-ful fuel.

Perhaps the crown jewel of the col-lection is the 1954 Harley Earl designedOldsmobile F-88 Concept Car, which

Hendricks bought at the prestigiousBarrett-Jackson Auto Auction inScottsdale for a staggering $3.24 mil-lion. It is the only one of its kind still inexistence out of only two, maybe three, which were built.

So if and when you find yourself onthe West Slope, remember theres anautomotive wonderland waiting for youat the Gateway Auto Museum and get-ting there is half the fun.
