One comment, in particu- lar, will stand out or his ans  who are more amiliar with his guitar histrionics than his apparent belie in extraterres- trial lie. “Let’s pretend there’s a y- ing saucer coming down,” Hendrix says on the track, Mirrors Tell Lies. “Instead o checking it out, people want to shoot it down. Tey should try and get into it, see what it’s really about. Hendrix’s open-minded- ness really shouldn’t come as a big surprise when you con- sider his wizardry and how he singlehandedly redened the guitar’s sound.  And given that Collins believes he’s “rom another  world,” his decision to use those quotes makes sense. In act, George Clinton,  who spoke about science c- tion and Aro-uturism at the British Library in London last month, once told me he and Bootsy (who played in Clin- ton’s Parliament Funkadelic band) “had an encounter in Mississauga so I deinitely believe they ’re here. “I heard Jimi alluding to extra-terrestrial lie on a ew songs, but I wasn’t aware he  was deep into it,” Collins tells me in a sot midwestern lilt rom Cincinnati. “But, you know, it’s not a surprise to me. he legendary unk bass- ist, who brings his 13-strong army to the jazz estival Sat- urday, says he unearthed the quote while working on a Hendrix project last year. he Hendrix amily had asked me to narrate (the doc- umentary) Jimi Hendrix Voo- doo Child (that’s part o the West Coast Seattle Boy box set) so I got the chance to read letters and postcards that Jimi had written,” the lie- Bootsy  call long Hendrix an says. “I was recording my album at the same time and I elt I really needed to include some o this stu so I asked or their permission and his sister said, ‘O course!’ and let me pick whatever I wanted.” he man ondly known as Bootzilla says that “even though Jimi and I never met, I really eel we’ve been con- nected or a long time. “Jimi was the cat!” says the down-to-earth Collins whose irst group, he Pacesetters, served as James Brown’s back-up band rom ’69 to ’71. “His music speaks or itsel, it’s just amazing. And as ar as expressing his soul and his look, he just brought it!” On Tha Funk Capital of the World , Collins brings the unk with the help o more than a dozen guests. Tese include Public Ene- my’s Chuck D, the prominent  Arican-American cultural critic Cornel West, the Rev. Al Sharpton, Snoop Dogg, soul legend Bobby Womack and acclaimed banjo player Bela Fleck. In an interview, Chuck D told me, “What Hendrix is to the guitar, Mr. Boots is to the bass. Hands down! I think the unspoken genius o Bootsy is his humble approach to get- ting artists motivated and together as one. hat’s a unique git. Some critics have said the disc is so crowded with guests it eels like the colour- ul bassist is a guest himsel. Collins bristles when I raise this. his record isn’t about me, it’s bigger than me,” he says. “I don’t care that some critics are missing the point. I I’d listened to the critics back in the day, I wouldn’t be playing what I play. Back then, they said stuf like, ‘You can’t play bass like that!’ and ‘You can’t wear clothes like that!’ “I want to bring people together and get ’em excited and do it in a way that really moves them,” Collins adds. “Music today is all about the paper god and I can’t put my trust in that god. I put my trust in what people need and what they need is love.  And someone’s gotta bring it.” NOTE: Bootsy Collins and his band are at David Pecaut Square (near Roy Thomson Hall) Saturday.
