As most of you know by now, my last day here is this Sunday. On one hand it seems like I just got here and on the other like I have been here for years. It is as if I have been here for years because I feel at home here. No, it was not an easy transition, and it has not been all sunshine and butterflies, but it has been good. It has been a blessing to serve as one of your priests this past year. My experience of this first year of priesthood has been phenomenal. It is beyond humbling to be Christs vessel in this way, bringing the sacraments to His people and being a part of essential moments in their lives. While the task seems unsurmountable (impossible) for a country boy with his own weaknesses and shortcomings, just like any other sinner, the Lord certainly provides. I have truly learned that He does not call us to a task without giving us what is necessary to fulfill it through His most abundant grace. As a priest, by no merit of his own, one is granted immediate access into the most sacred parts of peoples lives. From crisis situations, to long-time struggles, to illnesses and deaths, to marriage preparation, to baptism, to the daily trials and joys that we as human beings experience, the priest is called to act as a bridge between humanity and the Lord, making Christs presence known. Thus, the priest is invited into lives and families with hopes that He will point to Christ. Thank you for allowing me to be one of your priests. As I alluded to earlier, the transition was a challenge as I entered with a new pastor (Fr. Rodney) following a well-liked pastor (Msgr. Bridges) who had been here twenty-two years (who had his hand in building almost everything here, structurally and internally) along with a beloved parochial vicar (Fr. Bala Anthony) who had been here for two and a half years. Nevertheless, many of you welcomed me with open arms and hearts and have been extremely supportive. I have seen the goodness of Gods people at work. Each day here at St. Stephens, both by parishioners and staff, I have been humbled by examples of service, kindness, forgiveness, strength, resilience, faith, hope and love all in action, doing the work of our Lord. It has inspired me to more closely imitate Christ and to lead His people in a manner that is worthy of Him. The learning curve has been steep, but I am thankful for the ways in which each of you have helped me grow more and more into what the Lord is asking me to be. Thank you to so many of you who inspired me daily by your examples of service and prayer so selflessly day in and day out. I would also like to thank Fr. Rodney in particular for his patient, steady support. He allowed me to experience the whole gamut (the whole enchilada) in a short period of time. It would be hard to match the amount and type of experience that I have gained here in one year. As I move on to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Odessa and as Fr. Adam Droll and Fr. Freddy Perez enter St. Stephens, I ask you to welcome them as many of you welcomed me. It will take them time to get their feet on the ground, so please be patient with them. They will be different from me and from any other priest that has been here, and that is a good thing. God has blessed and prepared them for this part of the journey in a particular way. Allow yourselves to receive the blessings and to be a part of Gods good work. Dont worry about what was or what could have been, but rather about what is and how God is presently at work. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives and for the love and support many of you have showed me in different ways. May our all-powerful and all-magnificent Lord continue to bless and keep each of you in His loving protection. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Timothy Hayter

Greetings, It is hard to believe that I am in my final days at St. Stephen’s. As most of you know by now, my last day here is this Sunday.

Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

Many of the shoppers of our thrift store are “regulars.” They shop every day (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday) that we are open and we come to know them – their habits, their moods, their anxieties, their joys. When we noticed Isaac a few months ago desperately seeking something in the store in areas that he did not usually frequent, we became curious. He usually looked through movies, books and knickknacks. But when we asked him, he said that he was looking for hardware.

He told us that his cousin, a victim of MS, had recently been relegated full-time to an electric scooter. She is only 41 years old. While she had managed the transition to the scooter, she was despondent over the fact that she was homebound. She had always participated heavily in her children’s athletic endeavors, and even after the horrible disease started robbing her of her mobility, she was at least able to watch them from the sidelines. But that was no longer an option. Insurance had covered the scooter, but would not cover the lift that would allow the scooter to be hoisted into a vehicle.

Her husband could not bear his wife’s depression. Her spirit was gone. Their budged was already stretched to the max over her medical expenses and there was no way he could raise the money for the lift. He approached Isaac to see if there was some way they could build something themselves that would work to transport the scooter. And so Isaac came to Helping Hands looking for a miracle that might be hidden on the shelves of our store.

What he found was the attentive eye of a caseworker who noticed his anxiety, listened to his story, and then offered a helping hand. We were able to get his cousin a refurbished lift that was needed to get her out of the house and actively back into her children’s lives. What a joy! Thank you for your generous donations to the store which makes Helping Hands a place where miracles happen!
