Special Education Teachers Leadership CohortPursuant to popular demand, a companion LEArn & LEAd session has also been developed for special education teachers. Special Education Teachers accepted in the Special Education Teachers Leadership Cohort will attend this session. Part One of the session highlights the IEP process skills addressed in the session for LEA Representatives, as described above. Part Two of the session for special education teachers addresses IEP content and implementation issues based upon IDEA caselaw, supplemented by group activity and discussion regarding the LEArn & LEAd program and plans of action to implement process and content suggestions provided during the session.

May sessions will be face-to-face, unless a virtual session is deemed necessary due to COVID-19 pandemic.

LEA Representatives Leadership CohortTo kick off the LEA Representatives Leadership Cohort, all participants will attend a one-day training program with suggested tools and strategies that can assist LEA Representatives in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. These responsibilities include ensuring that all IEP Team members are provided the opportunity for meaningful participation and input; using effective visual tools and other strategies for keeping IEP meetings on track, particularly when legal mishaps (“Critical Action Times” (“CATs”) occur; preventing, intervening and resolving potential conflict; addressing difficult behaviors and conversations effectively; and, as a result, ensuring that an overall organized, efficient and legally compliant meeting occurs. Through the provision of sample process management tools and an IEP meeting demonstration, it is the LEArn & LEAd goal that participants will take away immediate ideas and tools they can use in IEP meetings, along with improved knowledge and skills to support effective collaboration between parents and school staff, while also avoiding misunderstandings, distrust and anxiety that can often result in special education legal disputes.
